Hey guys, havent had to worry about it in a while but I'm planning an upgrade and am wondering what are a few of the current top s939 HSFs? 120mm in particular, although 92mm is acceptable...any HSF shoot-outs I should be checking out?

another vote for Thermalright XP-120

Thermalright HR-01 cools better, but has a shitty mounting clip. XP-120 also blows air downward, cooling RAM and possibly mosfets if they are close.

This section of spcr should have all the reviews you'll need to make your decision.

in my opinion, buy ninja.

cool, thanks guys, guess I'll have some comparisons/research to do :D

Me and Thermalright have a good past, but I figured I'd ask before assuming they still kick ass...

My Scythe Ninja is great, 3700 San Diego 2.2ghz @ 2.82ghz 1.45volts, with just a low speed 120 on it. 43C load temp.

For the price, you can't do any better than Ninja unless you don't have the space for it. Otherwise the XP-90's still decent, Arctic Cooling's Freezer64 Pro ain't bad either but you're tied down to the fan it comes with (and undervolting it for less noise doesn't yield as nice results as one of the TR models w/a slower fan), still very good for the cost though. Zalmans have gone up in price too much, 'specially their 9xxx model.

Wow no mention of the Big Typhoon? Are these other hsf choices actually that much better than the Big Typhoon to not warrant a mention? I'm trying to decide on a hsf for a 4400+ X2 and its between the Big Typhoon and the Ninja. I'm gonna look at more reviews and such.

ninja is a great HSF, also xp-120 or SI 120 are nice.
Zalmans 9500 is another good choice.

I don't know... For the price of the Big Typhoon I'd rather go with the cheaper Ninja and my choice of fan. The Ninja is better oriented within the case to work with your existing case airflow too, not a big deal in bigger cases but it helps with noise (turbulence) in smaller ones imo.

Haven't seen enough comparative reviews of the Typhoon to know exactly how it stacks up with some of the other models mentioned here though. That and TT still carries some kinda stigma for me... :p

I actually like the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64.

Cheap, not too big, relatively quiet and cools my Opty 146@2.8 very adequate (37C idle, 47C load).

Now I think gonna go with the Ninja.:) Question though; does the clip for the optional fan only accept 25mm thick fans or can you use 38mm thick fans as well?

Well, the clips only support 25mm (not that it really limits your choices...), but to be honest you could use anything you'd like to strap any size fan to the heatsink. The clips are really only glorified bent paperclips anyway, so it wouldn't take much thought to get different sized fans attached.

wow, thanks for the suggestions guys, the Scythe really kicks ass too...I'm seeing it at around $40 shiipped too...good value across the board too. I do like the Thermalright (good past exp. with them) and the Thermaltake, but it really looks like the Ninja is the pack leader...

Looks like it's performance is on par with the Scythe Ninja or latest Zalman, cost is about the same as the Ninja after you add a fan to that one (at NewEgg anyway)... Guess it depends on your particular setup. If you have a rear 120mm case fan right by the socket area the Ninja will benefit greatly from the smooth exhaust imo.

Its unbeatable for its price. I'm running an Opty 146 @ 3050 Mhz with 1.45 volts on one.
