anyone recommend a completely tool less case from hd's to dvd burners to exterior thumbscrews. seen a few by enlight, but nothing else. and i did search before posting this.

most new cases are toolless I'd think.

My Centurion 5 was my first foray into a toolless case and I can't believe how much easier simple things are.
 
The CM-690 is completely tooless, and pretty popular on this board. I own my myself, and I think its a great case. Its even pretty cheap.
 
The Silverstone TJ06 is completely tool-less, boy was that a good case!
 
I've yet to see a totally toolless case. My coolermaster 330 was toolless except for the Power Supply screws, side panel screws (I replaced those with thumbscrews), rear exhaust fan (you could replace those screws with those silicone nub/plug dealies, though.
 
You'll find that most cases require tools--almost every single one will require a screwdriver to secure the motherboard to the tray or case. I've only seen one case--an OEM Dell uATX from '99 or so--that didn't require any tools, even for the motherboard.

I'm building a MATX HTPC right now with an old DELL L800R... The motherboard is tooless but I am modding the heck out of it and it will have 8 screws that hold in my (2) new front 120mm case fans. I might be starting a work log on this project. The case has a date stamp of 02/2000 on it.

when i meant toolless, was referring to the install of the hard drives only.. rest can use screws, we have a old dell e510 tower at work and to change the hard drive, out pops a plastic tray with the hard drive in it.. very simple design, but effective.

i hate using metal screws to hold a hard drive in place, something about putting metal into those holes makes the hard drive fail sooner.. i'm prob not correct at all.. but i really like cases that avoid metal with hard drives.

anyway, i cant seem to find a case that uses dell's concept for the hard drives at least.
 
I think he's thinking something more like this: Those backplanes are pretty fancy.
HDD mobile rack.

But I dunno, those might stilll have the dreaded screws to attach drive to sled.

My only worries about screws in HDDs are using too long a screw, like a case screw.

Thermaltake have been doing tool less HDD and CD drive installs since 2003, it just requires two brackets that clip in place on either side of the device and then slide and click into position. Pretty sure the new Xaser 4 has the clips as well, Shark has them, the armour has a flip clip on the side of the HDD frame which clips down into the thread holes.
