Scammer not sammer

I paid for an E6400 from this guy. the only reason I made payment right away without getting details is because I mistook him for toddm27 who I had several comms with on XS about stuff. Stupid me. After I realised I asked for contact details but he refused. The he sends item by non-registered means and its been 2 weeks and no sign. Now given im in australia sure theres a chance its late. So I pmed 2 other guys that paid for stuff in US and neither has received anything. On top of that one of them as received a pm from another user saying he also paid for the same P5B-D motherboard as him which is strange is it not?

Todd258 you can prove me wrong and I will happilly eat humble pie but Im sorry it looks very fishy. Im just annoyed because I always check refs etc but like I said I thought he was another guy that I know is trustworthy.

Ive already filed a paypal dispute, not waiting untill he empties his paypal account. If I get a refund and im wrong I will happily pay when it arrives but I just have a strong feeling it wont.

I wanted to warn others as he has open threads selling lots of stuff.
Again I hope im wrong.

hrmmm anyone that refuses to give any type of personal info as in even a tele number sounds fishyI hope he didnt empty the pp account before you sent s dispute otherwise your sol

I purchased the 500GB Seagate from him.

Sent paypal on 3/22/07 and it cleared on 3/27/07 (e-check).

Asked him on 3/28/07 if the HD shipped. He replied that he saw the paypal funds cleared and he would 'ship it out tomorrow' (3/29/07)

I ask him for a tracking number and he replies with:
"I used USPS, so I didn't get a tracking number. Please let me know in a few days if you still haven't received it. It shouldn't take too long to get to you.

If you haven't gotten it in a few days, I will go down to the Post Office to talk to a supervisor."

If he had paid $.50 (assuming he even used priority), he would be able to track it as well as I would. Besides, the Post Office will ask "Did you get Delivery confirmation or insurance on it?" and that will be the end of the argument.

Poor trading practice thus far...

well in paypal you as a buyer can win wiht a ittem not recieved dispute cuz if he didnt get not tracking how cna he prove he sent it.
I do not know what the means are for shipping over seas but I am sure that there has to be a way for thtem to track your package.

First of all my friend checked his ebay ID- todd2115 as he mentioned it in his sale topic, and there is no answer almost a week!

What looked strange to me- It was impossible to send him money to account which he gave me after trying a few times he gave me his brothers account- same thing! And as he said he gave me his old paypal account- and I sent money to that! Surnames for both accounts were the same!

I sent him money on first day when he made his sale topic, but it was asked too much for him to mark my items as sold, so they stayed here for a few days, and another user PMd me saying that his already paid for mobo same as I did! :(

And when we were talking before making deal I asked him final costs including shipping costs via USPS Global express mail! And he gave me unbelievable low price! I asked once more about shipping costs and he said dont worry I'll take care of shipping costs myself!

And as he said me he had shipped out but didnt get an tracking number! Yeah right! Thats why I asked him to use EMS! But now he's saying:
I never agreed to ship it with any special service. I agreed to ship it to you. I only charged you $15 for shipping, what did you think you were going to get?? Overnight??

Only service which doesn't provide tracking number is surface parcel post! But its not the best way to ship to EU countries! OK whats done is done then I asked him to send me at least some copy of receipt! Now I'm waiting for two days for it- and no response!

If needed I can publish all his PMs!

I purchased the Optiplex 240 from him and it took me posting in his thread to get him to mark it as sold. He sent me a address before I paid (which I am pretty sure is bogus) but I think I found quite a bit more information about him then he really wants found.

I believe he lives in semi-small town in PA (which is very good for us) and turns 17 in May. By Monday I should be able to confirm his address and possibly have his parents information. If it turns out he is scamming people I will do everything I can to make sure he gets what he deserves. This has happened to me once before and it took a year but everyone who wanted a refund got one but it took a Judge to make it happen.

I am one of the "buyers" of Todd's P5B Deluxe WiFi motherboard. I first wrote him on 3/24/07 about purchasing it. I asked a few questions about the mobo and when I decided to purchase it I asked Todd to ship via USPS Priority Mail so that I could get it sooner. He agreed and I sent payment.

Things got a bit strange for me when another guy in the thread also claimed to have bought it and wanted to be updated on the status of the sale. I sent that member a PM telling him that I thought I was the buyer and asked what was going on. I then sent Todd a PM asking if he could clear this up.

He told me that the other guy was from Latvia and that there had been a misunderstanding -- that his payment didn't go through so Todd decided to sell the board to me. I was willing to accept this at the time.

Stupid me didn't think to verify his eBay feedback because I was in a hurry to get a board at the time. Red flags were raised when I sent the payment; I noticed that he was unverified/confirmed with PayPal but I saw where he had "sold" some other stuff in his thread and hoped there wouldn't be any issues.

Anyway, I wrote him a couple of days later asking if he could confirm that he shipped the board. By this time it was Tuesday and I still hadn't received tracking info or even a message saying "Hey, it's on the way." Todd informed me that he shipped the board via UPS Ground to minimize his costs since he had to lower the price of the board to sell it. This was frustrating to me since I specifically requested Priority Mail, but even then I was willing to overlook it as long as I received what I paid for. He also got very defensive at this time, saying that he knew I had been in contact with the other buyer of the mobo and that it was ridiculous that everyone thought he was out to get him. I sent him a PM in return asking for a tracking # for the UPS shipment. If he could at least provide proof that he did in fact ship me a package, it would have put my mind at ease. He said he would "try" to find the tracking number since he had made several other shipments, and I received no further updates.

So yesterday I sent him a message requesting a refund. I told him that I had waiting long enough considering the circumstances and that if he did indeed ship the board and it arrived after he refunded me that I would send it back. He then tried to pull the "Why should I trust you to do that" routine and said that he wasn't going to refund me until he received the board. I then pointed out my considerable positive feedback and THAT'S why he should trust me -- that I wasn't out to get him; I simply wanted a refund as I had found another board. With a low post count here, zero Heat, eBay feedback that he will not verify to buyers, and the questionable status with his PayPal account...he has no business questioning whether or not to trust the honest traders here. The odds are against him at this point and I will not let this die until there is resolution of some sort.

Todd, I would like a refund or a genuine tracking number. Either one will help your cause here, so why not help yourself out?

There is no doubt anymore he's scammer!

If he sold same P5B dlx to two different persons and saying me and you that he had already shipped out but cant provide an tracking number ! I'm the one who sent him money on 24/03/2007! I have sent him 315$ for P5B dlx and G.Skill ram kit!

Can somebody send me PM with more info about him! And please help me filling paypal dispute- please send me some example to PM!

any of you guys that have contact info please pm me with it so I can file an FBI action online.
im going ot wait for paypal and if they do shit then contact my CC company, I made sure to use it. this also proves that supplying photos doesnt stop you scamming as he alwyas has pics of the stuff he supposed to be selling.

also the E6400 I paid for he says he bought off Sladesurfer. If thats true should be able to get contact details off him. Ive already pmed him asking for them.

This was the thread in question:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1173775

Apparently the thread has been closed, but not by a mod...interesting.
Actually, he closed the thread himself.

"Due To Overwhelming Insecurities, this thread is being closed. I will contact the members who would like a refund for their items in the next few hours. Since someone decided to try and ruin my thread by saying I am not shipping my items, I will have to close.

Word of wisdom, don't trust international buyers from Latvia. They lie and they enjoy ruining your FS thread."

I filed a PP dispute just in case he is scamming (still sort of giving him the benefit of the doubt here). My case isn't so blatant as everyone else's it appears, but again...if it's happened before...

I hate to rub salt in an open wound, but if everyone would follow the trading tips outlined in the rules, there would be little need of threads such as this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quick Tips for trading ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(1) Always use delivery confirmation, and always keep the proof that you shipped. More info in this thread CLICK HERE
(2) Always ask for a real name, home address, and telephone number. Verify it with a call or a search in the white pages.
(3) If the seller is suspicious, please search for info about him or contact a mod. If deal sounds too good to be true, chances are that it is.
(4) Don’t jump to conclusions, email the seller if you have problems, if you have their phone number, give them a call.
(5) If you feel that you’ve been scammed, you can file complaints about internet fraud directly with the FBI at their Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFFC) http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp. You can also go to www.usps.com and file a complaint for postal fraud, and most state Attorney Generals have an online internet fraud complaint form.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Avoiding Trolls~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(1) No matter what, get a name, address and phone number and then confirm the information by:

a. Phoning the telephone number and checking if it is actually them.

b. Going to www.switchboard.com or a similar site and check out if the last name matches the address. If it does not match, find out why from the trader before selling (the telephone may be listed to another party in the house) Chances are if they won't provide a phone number, something is up.

(2) Don't ship first without getting good references. You can get money back through different means if your money is taken, but your SOL if you ship before receiving payment.

(3) Use a credit card with paypal when at all possible. You're only liable for 50$ in damages if someone rips you off.

(4) If you cannot use a credit card, use a check since they are traceable and can prove your case if it comes down to contacting the police.

(5) Don't accept a cell phone for the phone number. It's much easier to change or cancel than a home phone number.

(6) Keep a record of all conversation with the person pertaining to the trade. It provides backup when having to deal with the police.

(7) Be wary of anyone with a recent forum registration date. Post count means little, date of registration does.

(8) If a deal seems too good to be true, chances are that it is......so be wary.

that's why always ask for references first. i have ebay and i ahve heatware. i dealt multiple times on ebay selling to people and doing the transaction outside ebay.(like ending the auction early) as to avoid ebay % fees. i have dealt w/ numerous people in USA and outside the US, and i always tell people- here are a few of the pepople i ahve dealt w/ in the past outside ebay, they cant leave me a feedback but here's their emails if you want to contact them before we proceed you are welcome to do so. and one thing i ask from people who cant elave a feedback is that they become one of my references in the future and that they'd be honest about the transaction.

always ask for references! and contact those people how the person you are about to deal business w/ conducts himself.

and BTW, i always use a method where there's tracking number. it is to protect me -if the buyer claims he dint receive his item, and it is also to protect the buyer if the item gets lost so i can file for insurance and get his money back.) this happened to me shipping to canada. i filed for insurance and give the buyer his money back. i've always believe in karma. what's a couple hundred bucks when it hits you back ten folds?

I will not give out any information that I have until I can confirm it. It does no good for evweryone to harass a innocent person (especially if he is under 18) because the information isn't for sure.

I have a very good lead and hopefully I won't need to go any further (call his parents, call the police, call "Jon", etc.). Lets just hope he smartens up and sends the refunds out.

Oh, and just in case Todd is reading this... I know you gave me a bogus address but it wasn't hard to find out you live about 200 miles from the address you told me you lived at.

If that is the case, it would be considered mail fraud and would move into federal jurisdiction. There is a link in my earlier post for contacting the authorities.

I filed a Paypal dispute and received this as a response:

"From Seller: Todd Austerberry on 3/31/2007 21:09 PDT
I did not authorize any of these transactions. Someone has been on my account the last couple weeks. I haven't been on my PayPal account in a while. I am not the person who is taking all of this money, someone is going onto my account and impersonating me on this forum site. I've never even been on any of these sites."

I haven't recieved this in my PayPal complaint yet. This is the exact same shit the last guy tried to pull.

If anyone has a few ghours and wants to read up about what all went on with him check out http://www.adamhoward.com/

@MajorDomo I agree with everything you said but if you see the reason I jumped in because of mistaken identity. I feel damn stupid for doing that.:eek:

Actually I paid him to different account, because it was impossible to fund those accounts which he gave me at first:

And what did you expect? I PM'd you for tracking number and then at least for print of receipt but there were no answer! So my next step were a few questions about it in you topic! It's not my fault that you can't provide me tracking number as promised and was it really so hard to mention those items as sold and to whom? Here you go two persons had paid you for the same board! :mad:

Is it my fault and where had I lied you? :mad:

That name will help me confirm his identity. Thanks for the info.

insecurities my ass. you havent bothered to reply to me since I told you I was making this thread. also nothing in paypal saying it was a wrong account. you are full of shit and now trying to cover your tracks. but deleting the threads will do nothing for you. there are already enough of us to get you into some shit with authorities. I suggest you refund evveryone right away and give up on the idea of scamming in future. make money the honest way you cheating little scumbag. wish I was somewhere near you is all i can say.:mad:

just got a reply back from todd2115 on ebay

No, that is def. not me. I don't use any forums like that. I only use eBay.

now actually im not sure. this user is in PA same as this turd is. its possible he was a decent ebayer but has now decided to scam on forums. and now realising he cant get away with it, is trying to distance himself from being linked to this HF bullshit. its weird how others messaged him on ebay and nothing then all of a sudden I do and the day after this thread the ebay person replies........very fishy.

another thing he said the e6400 was bought off sladesurfer. so I pmed him for todd258s details( he must have an address if he sent him the CPU). and slade has been on but not replied. I see no reason for him not to reply unless..........well im not going to point fingers but maybe you guys are thinking what im thinking? I dont know.

im not buying that this is someone else hijacking his thread crap. bloody troll trying not to have his name in mud.

http://www.overclock.net/rants-raves/173942-help-somone-acting-like-me.html

and his for sale thread on oc.net
http://www.overclock.net/sale/167632-sale-p5b-deluxe-wifi-g-skill.html?highlight=sladesurfer

everyone sign up and let them know he is a troll.

can the mods here please contact the mods on oc.net and check the IP numbers etc? its our duty to warn everyone about this troll. he thought he could get away with it but we need to make sure his name is mud everywhere.

also if this todd258 isnt the same guy on oc.net then how did he know he bought the cpu I paid for off sladesurfer? there is not mention in the thread who the cpu was sold to so mustve been by pm.
http://www.overclock.net/sale/161057-sale-sladesurfers-i-need-money-sale.html?highlight=sladesurfer

so wait he was genuine here and now his thread has been hijacked?thats not what he says on oc.net he says the user todd258 on HF isnt him and he didnt start this thread here. so again bullshit, its defo the same guy.
please mods verify this with IP addresses, the troll must be stopped!

ok I was wrong. they got rid of the thread so no more off-topic rants. they are investigating the claims along with our mods here. thanks guys just want whats best for the 2 communities(and my money back too would be nice).
one funny thing is I only went to oc.net to see about this but I kinda like it so will be posting there as well as here on other topics not related to scammers. :D

I'm still here with you guys. I got the same "someone is impersonating me" BS when I checked the status of my PayPal dispute this morning, so I escalated it to a claim. Hopefully they can help us out. At this point I'm not inclined to believe that...if someone DID gain access to his PayPal and/or forum account, any smart person would have changed the passwords so that Todd couldn't access them. At this point, according to Todd, both he and the "scammer" have access to the accounts (unless Todd changed the password to lock the scammer out).

Anyway, I've had it. Todd agreed to ship me the mobo via Priority Mail, then when I asked for confirmation of shipping he said he shipped it via UPS Ground but conveniently was unable to provide a tracking number. Then after I opened the dispute with PayPal, he writes "I don't know what has happened, I will go to the post office and see if I can get this mess cleared up." My question is, why is there any need to go to the post office if you shipped UPS Ground? He can't even keep his story straight, and is now changing it to the "someone is taking advantage of my account" to try and escape responsibility.

$160 won't break me, but it's the point. I earned my feedback record the hard way and that means I've gone to great lengths to make sure each one of my trading partners is satisfied. I also work for a living so I can play hard at the end of the day. It really ticks me off when losers try to take advantage of people like me and you so that they can benefit from our efforts.

Guys, keep me updated. I'm eager to see this sucker get what he deserves :cool:

btw this account I have sent money to was verified no like those two first he gave me! And surname for both account was the same!

And imyourzero that's the same he did with me! We had talk about priority mail before making deal but now he's saying he had sent via surface! Anyway if he had done this this way he must have receipt for it! But he cant show me it for 4 days now! :mad: Of course he cant if he is sending same mobo to two different persons :D

I am a moderator at OCN, I wanted to let you guys know that we are investigating this issue, too. No scamming has taken place on our forums yet, but if Todd's story is false we want to prevent further scam. We've yet to prove that one way or they other, though. Any help we can provide to you and your moderators to get this mess sorted out will be our pleasure.

Good to hear.

JESUS "F" CHRIST I almost bought a motherboard/cpu combo from this guy, Ultimately MY gut told me not to trade with him even though he was courteous in his messages. When he said he only had his ebay score and no heat I just somehow couldn't trust him, even though he was offering an awesome deal. I can't believe I came so close to possibly being trolled. :(

thanks chipp you n00bie. :p :D :cool:

Amazingly I almost purchased from the guy too. I am rather upset that people who fight hard to build a reputation cannot trust people that are new here, not all of us have been around long enough to be well known in the community. This is discouraging cause not all n00bies are bad people. Hard to build a rep when no one trusts n00bies lol, but this is what happens when people think they can scam

I cant say it any better then that... people like this make it imposible to trade online now for this simple reason of fu#king people over. I worked so hard to get what little feed back I have which is all good.

And then people want you to ship first which really makes me worried cuz you never know when and if your gonna get hit by a scam or a hacked account.

Now after saying this I gues the only thing i can segest is to get to know the person via online messneger ect.... Pumb how long did I talk to you? lol I mean 99.9% of the people I have delt with I have talked to extensivly before selling or buying.
If you talk to the person you can usually get that "fee;ing" if you are getting takin for you money most times.
I hope this gets resolved..... I do find it really funny he did not come in here to defend himself really....

As for CC charges though Paypal... I knwo myself I cant take to many debit/cc payments in paypal, and if that is the case if people want to do that expect to pay more for items that way cuz of the PP charges that come with it and the % pp takes off the top. Ive lost alot of money that way with PP and im so happy i ve nothing to sell anymore or else my prices would reffelct the extra "hiddin" charges.

Just get to knwo the person you are trading with,

Seriously dude, what the hell? You can't just point fingers like that...I've traded with members who have then gone troll/scammer, and I would be pissed as hell if someone started accusing me of collusion. As far as I knew, they were n00bie buyers getting started in building Heat, I'm sure slade feels similarly.

Agreed.. not responding to PM's is definitely not troll behavior. Sometimes, I take a day or so to think about responses to PM's.

He also sold me the p5b deluxe. I have bought and sold many times on different forums without issue. I guess I got lazy in checking things out more. I am also going to file a claim with paypal. People like this ruin it for the rest of us. :mad:

yes I got your pm mate. I actually forgot I typed this in the heat of the moment so I now publicly apologise, sladesurfer is in NO way connected to the scam. he is a good user on both here and oc.net.

and it turns out I was right, its the same todd258 on oc.net as here he has been caught after investigation by the mods thanks to me for posting there I guess. well at least im happy about that as he had a decent reputation on oc.net and people trusted him with deals. he tried to squirm his way out of it but has been caught and banned.:D

So ummm WTF do I do about $200 that I paid to him? Never had this happen before, I complained on paypal but is there ANY chance that I am going to get my money back?

Damn danny, he got you too. Nobody wanted to buy my other 6300, so I figured I would pick up another board for it. I filed a claim with paypal, but I don't know if it will do any good. I am going to look into filing a local police report if I find out where he lives.
