Hi I bought the kids a PC about 2 years ago, the MB is a ASUS P5n E SLI and a Intel quad 2.66 processor EVGA 9800 VC. PC will be used for is gamming for my son who plays Starcraft2, Civ5, Fallout2 ect. My daughter does not use it that much except to download music to iPod. I need suggestions on what to get as far what to get for them. As processors go, is there any advantage to Intel i5-i7 as opposed to AMD phantom processors? I think we will work on what processor to get first and work on other components like MB, memory and HD later I already bought a new VC a XFX 5870 to be put in current pc but might wait until we get something new.

Please answer the stickied "ANSWER THESE QUESTION FIRST" so that we can help you better.

First off, which specific "Intel quad" do you have? Second, which resolution is your son gaming? Third, are you trying to upgrade the rig that you currently have, or are you seeking to build a second system?

Here's a better question: What about your needs? Do you use this system yourself?

Whether or not you need a new system depends on whether or not your current system meets your needs. The HD 5870 is overkill for gaming at any resolution below 1920x1080, and it may turn your processor into a performance bottleneck. Additionally, if you have a 500 watt or lower powered PSU (with less than 35A of combined power through its 12V rails), you won't have enough power to run the 5870 while gaming.

The AMD Phenom II series (not Phantom) are better than your Core 2 quad but they're outperformed by Intel's Socket 1156 and Socket 1366 platforms. However, to perform a complete overhaul, you'd need to buy a new motherboard, a new processor, some DDR3 RAM, and a new power supply (which is recommended whenever you're jumping from an old platform to a new one). You'll probably be spending at least $500 for those components.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? Etc
Mostly gaming (Fallout3, Need for Speed, COD2,and Starcraft2) and new games coming out
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$850.00 including taxes
3) Where do you live?
San Antonio,TX
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
New MB,CPU(Intel i5-i7, or AMD PhenomII X3 or X4) and RAM DDR3.HD WD 1.5TB
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model. Will be reusing Cooler Master HAF case, and power supply Cossair AX750 750watt PS, and
6) Will you be overclocking?
No
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Have 2 Asus 23.6 model # VH242H monitors
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Buying components in the next week and have neighbor building it for us.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
No features needed
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?n
Will need new OS have vista now need Win7

The CPU we have now is Intel Q6600, I play 1-2 hrs a week COD2, but he is worried that the current system won’t play new games he wants to buy like fallout las vagas COD black ops, and new medal of honor game. Should I just upgrade current one with new CPU I think we maxed out memory to 8GB, suggestions?

A Q6600 should be able to handle those games well enough. What video card is the system running?

Hmm, any chance of you being able to return that HD 5870?

Make sure whether or not you really have maxed the RAM out at 8GB of DDR2 RAM.

The VC can be returned with no problem may I ask why? and RAM is maxed out already.

Because depending on how much you paid for that HD 5870, you can get a GTX 460 1GB SLI setup for not that much more but with significantly more performance.

Prelim setup:
$320 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU + Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 Intel P55 ATX Motherboard Combo
$82 - G.Skill F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333 RAM
---
Total: $402 plus tax and shipping.
