Time for a New Hard Drive?

A little while ago my computer started, randomly and fairly rarely, BSOD'ing. Didn't think much of it, and the BSODs stopped. Instead, though, now I get random freezes or "hangups" for 30-45 seconds such as, for example, when I try to do simple things like open Chrome. The freezes are becoming more common and the hangups are happening more and more regularly. I did do a fresh install of Win7 when the freezes/hangups were just starting, didn't change a thing.

My immediate reaction was a failing boot drive, considering that the drive is one of my oldest in my rig (4-5 years maybe). I tried to run an HDTune error scan on the boot drive a few times, but it causes the computer to freeze about 1/3 of the way through, finding a handful of bad sectors in that first 1/3.

I started a checkdisk before I left for work today and it found a couple dozen problems in the first part (unreadable file segments?, can't remember) before I walked out the door. I'll try to check it with CrystalDiskInfo when I get home.

All that said, sounds like a typical bad drive scenario, right?

I'm thinking of replacing it with an SSD. Recommendations?

If you want a SSD. Go for the Crucial M4 128GB or if you want Intel the 120GB 510 isn't bad either.

Or to get the best of both worlds: Grab the Crucial M4 64GB SSD andthrow your OS and small/commonly used apps on there. Then grab the above Hitachi drive and install large sized apps and games as well as your data on that drive.

Quick question for people who have updated the firmware on a new SSD: did you just create a boot flash/cd and do it with only that drive plugged in before the Windows install, or did you put it into another computer that already had a boot drive to update?

Well Crystal Disk is saying my C drive is in caution, though I don't quite understand how that works based on the numbers (i.e. why the numbers make the 1st one caution, but not any others). Anyone want to help interpret? Current pending sector and uncorrectable sector are the two in yellow.

These should normally always be zero in the last column (raw data). Having non zero values for these means the drive can not read a few sectors (E = 14) that were written in the past meaning the drive lost data. This could be just a few bad sectors or a sign of a mechanical failure.

Basically they don't. The manufacturer does not think that loosing a few sectors of your data is a problem... This may or may not be a problem depending on what caused the data loss. I mean if it was from a localized media defect that probably is not a problem. If it was caused from a bad head this is a serious problem and all of your data is at risk.

At work I see dozens of drives a year fail. Usually when a drive has any non zero value in the raw values for these 2 items it is a bad sign.
