Throttle Bandwidth

Hey everyone,

I recently built my sister a computer (so she didn't kick me off in the middle of gaming sessions) but it seems that she is still doing it. I have no idea what she does, but whatever it is she manages to steal a crapton of my bandwidth. My ping goes from 85 to well over 500 at times. She does not torrent and as far as I know isn't downloading massive files. Regardless, my ping shouldn't EVER go that high. We're on a crappy DSL connection, so our modem/router deal is a piece of shit and doesn't have any options (it can hardly port forward).

I want to know if there is a way to throttle her bandwidth back via software. I'm willing to sneak into her room and install something because its getting on my nerves, especially during scrims and such. She's on Vista Premium 32-bit; Google hasn't been of too much help. Also, if there is a way via software, how much should I throttle it back?

QoS from router...

i usually temp mac address banned my siblings if they did it. and my bet is she's downloading from limewire or something that'll max your bandwidth so there's none to spare for you. 756-1.5mb/s doesn't go far these days.

You need a router with qos support. Most routers don't have this feature. Another solution is both machines should be installed with NetLimiter and divide the bandwidth by the percentage.

As others have mentioned, QoS. What specific router do you have now? I ask because there are certain ones that can be flashed with a 3rd party firmware that enables QoS.

My modem/router is a 2Wire 2701HG-D thing I got from my ISP.

@noise: NetLimiter, eh? And really, I just want her to be throttled. Maybe a bit rude, but she's the one stealing mah bandwidth. ^_^

Oh wow, I was searching for "throttle bandwidth."

As for her noticing... it completely depends on what the hell she's doing. I mean, I've unplugged her a couple times and she obviously knows it is me (I'm the only one in the house that has computer skillz) so... I dunno. Again, completely on what she's doing.

if you have dd-wrt, tomato, or open-wrt compatible routers, flash it with linux. some people seem to brick it and blame it on others, so be careful. another option is spend $80 on a gaming router. most gaming routers have qos. the final option is go with the software route and have a talk with other user.

I may be wrong here, but my years of gaming and home network building has taught me this...

Throttling isn't the only solution, it *might* work, or it might not. Usually high pings on a LAN (out to the WAN) are caused because either the router or the modem can't handle so many simultaneous connections. You can limit a computer to 50kbps upload, but it can bring a small DSL line to it's knees if you have that computer doing 50 1kbps connections.

QoS is the real solution here, make sure the packets from your computer, or just any game, get sent before other uploads to the WAN.

Netlimiter yo

If you want something to install on her pc that is. If she finds it she can turn it off though ;)

Either buy an off-the-shelf router with QoS or get a DD-WRT flashable router. I'm thinking the former will be easier for you.

Oh and manually set her max number of connections to half of what it's set at right now. That combined with QoS should give you the ping you're looking for.
