One, will it look terrible to use a 23" IPS in the middle, and 2 (or 4) 23" TN on the sides?

Two, can you connect more than 3 monitors without running crossfire? IOW, the main GPU does the work and then displays the image out another card on PCI, in games?

Three, how does it look to use 5 monitors in landscape mode?

Thanks.

Probably, I hate having my displays different, but if i had to choose 3 TN's over 1 ips and 2 tn's i'd take the ips over matching.

Yes you can connect more then 3 without running crossfire. This requires something called SoftTH (free). It's apin to get running in some games, but others it's painless.

It's pretty terrible actually. You can even see the ends on the other monitors (assuming you're using widescreen monitors). I tried it for kicks and giggles back when I was running a 4870 1GB as my main card and had a TH2go and another lower end card. Performance was terrible no matter if it were windowed mode or soft th, and the ends of the monitors were of no use (basically soo much fisheye that there was enough objects to really take advantage). I opted for a 5x1P setup and it was soo much nicer. Better performance, and more immersive. I was using TN's and TN's ARE NOT good for portrait mode, but it was nice.

What if I want exactly 3, can I run 2 off my 6950 and 1 off my onboard, and get eyefinity? Or do I still need SoftTH?

I'm asking because I'm not sure if I can afford a displayport cable right now, that actually works.

You still need SoftTH. But honestly, unless you're running something that required dual-link DVI (i.e. 2560x1440 or 2560x1600) all you need is a $30 Active SL DP->DVI Adapter and a Mini-DP to DP adapter (might be in you GFX Card Box).

If you're getting a new 23" IPS screen it more than likely has a DP port... You can use 1 DP port and 2 DVI ports on the one card just fine. Just sayin'...
