John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory will soon begin clinical trials of the Modular Prosthetic Limb, a bionic arm controlled directly by a patient’s thoughts. The first trial will be within the year.

The final design - the MPL - offers 22 degrees of motion, including independent movement of each finger, in a package that weighs about nine pounds (the weight of a natural limb). Providing nearly as much dexterity as a natural limb, the MPL is capable of unprecedented mechanical agility and is designed to respond to a user's thoughts.

We'll need people equipped with bionics arms to combat the robot uprising in 2012.

My genetics Dr. is from John Hopkins. He has been helping me with my Muscular Dystrophy.
I would love to have the use of a bionic/cybernetic body lol.

I wonder if phantom pains still exist after you have a limb replaced in a way such as this.

Until they can pair up touch receptors to the original nerve endings phantom pains will always be there. Its basically your brain trying to produce a reaction when it has not received any stimulus from those nerve endings.

Although with as fast as technology is evolving I can see prosthetic limbs being tied directly into the nerve endings and being moved by nerve impulses rather than EEG impulses.

Something seems to be going wrong Doctor. I keep riding the subway and find myself day dreaming and next thing I know my prostatic arm is molesting an attractive girl. Particualrly, all my victims seem to be waitresses at the hooter restaurant down the street. Why does my though controlled robotic arm keep doing that when I daydream??

How much does it cost? Will most insurance companies pay for it? how does it perform in a fight? :D

it's all fun and games until someone get an arm put on.

I love this tech..!

My Ghost approves!

This will be a world changing technology considering the number of lost limbs in current battlefields. The downside (don't take that the wrong way, you get the point) of increased survivability I guess.
Anyway, exciting times exciting times..

Why does Dr. Strangelove come to mind?
Or the much-less-classic Idle Hands (1999)

Not strictly true. The brain is plastic and can learn to treat prosthetics as extensions of the body. You can even fool someone (with two working hands, mind you) into feeling pain with a mirror box and a plastic hand.

"House" did a take on this very thing last season... or was it two seasons ago?
