Thonet & Vander Kugel

RMA would be a pain to do if I order from abroad. And because of the shipping and currency conversion involved I could get it for less here.

The only thing wrong with it is that it's two discreet speakers, so I'd need additional hardware to facilitate level control. And I'd be already 10% over budget with the speakers themselves.

But first let's wait until I'm able to RMA the kugel. It's entirely possible that the reseller won't give my money back. The best I can hope for is that I can choose another product that they sell. And none of the mentioned speakers are on that list sadly.

But they do sell these: Audioengine A5+ Of course due to the facts mentioned earlier for over 500 USD

Thomann.de handles international sales daily, RMA is extremely simple. A parcel service will come to pick your stuff up. And the shipping fees are really low also, for example I can get large speakers from .de to finland for 20% the cost it would cost me to send them from here to .de.

As I've said with the currency conversion and shipping fee included it costs more than I'd have to pay locally, so there is no benefit in buying from them.

So, here is what happened. After the rma finished I thought about it for a few weeks and a few days ago I got a pair of lsr308s and a lexicon alpha sound card.

Nice choice on the speakers, lots of people like them here

Do you finally have the sound you wanted?

Yes the sound is perfect the difference in quality is much more than the difference in price. I only have a few minor issues left. The lexicon won't come back after I put the computer to sleep. And when it is powered on during startup there is a loud pop from the speakers.

It seems that the lexicon lacks mute circuits for bootup. You should try to find some other model that protects outputs during starts.

I haven't seen anything else available locally that would have level control and balanced output, and be simple enough. I don't want some big fancy mixer or recording studio.

I'll try to turn on the speakers after dac is already on.

Sorry for reviving an old thread but I would like to add to this since I have experience with this model.

I worked as a tech for a shop that sold these and we got a lot of returns for this unit. All of them had problems with the left driver. Since we had quite a few defective ones waiting for RMA the shipping was a concern so I was assigned to figure out what was going wrong and see if we could fix it if T&V provided parts.

It has nothing to do with the amp itself. There is an input stage buffer opamp that fails and the left channel signal never even reaches the amp. It's a cheap and easy fix but can always fail again. But yeah, there really is no input protection.

And I can confirm that the amps are all inside the right speaker. And as far as it goes it's not really high end design. The circuitry is mediocre at best. But the speakers in general sounded pretty good and I was considering buying a pair before we had all these problems.

They have a new revision out with an actual remote and Bluetooth capabilities. I'm really intrigued to see if they've fixed the input protection in that make.
