This Needs Its Own Thread.

EA and other publishers will completely cancel games if there isn't enough "buzz" on social media or preorders. It happens all the time. That's why we have so many threads about the E3 games that never made it to the store. 20 years later you see releases of Gameboy games that were over 90% completed, but they didn't get enough buzz to release. I watched some video of unfinished SNK games last month. Marketing is everything. Writing a competent game? Publishers could care less about that aspect. Notice how many broken games are released yearly. Nearly all need a day one patch or a big patch a week or 2 later after release.

Remember the game Shenmue that was on Kickstarter? They were already going to be published; they went to Kickstarter so that their publisher could decide how much money they were going to allocate them for a budget to complete the game. The game would have been canceled if little interest was paid to it during it's crowdfunding phase. You think they gave them stage space for free? Again marketing is everything.

I understand where you are coming from, but you have to take a step back from your goals and look at things from the eyes of a group of men that only want to make money. If making a stock projection means pushing a game out before it is ready, then so be it. Coding craftsmanship means absolutely nothing. To be exact the longer the game bakes in the oven, the lower the stock price goes, as it costs money to pay employees to work on the same project. Especially when they could be creating the next big thing.

I haven't pre-ordered since BF3 in 2011.
Refused to buy BF4 for six months until most of the game breaking bugs was fixed.......

But, I pre-ordered BF1 because BF is my favorite series on PC, it looks and plays awesome.
The Amazon discount with a gift card made it $18 so what the hell. The five year streak has been broken, only because of a massive discount.

All other games remain on my wait and see list.

The hilarious thing is that the same folks on here who will complain about a $15 Kickstarter pledge being a "gamble" and "waste of money" have no issue throwing down $60 on pre-orders...

That be the difference of guarenteeing to get something (even if merely shit) and possibility of getting nothing in return.

I kickstarted 3 projects, 1 was a sequel from a well established company (Divinity OS2), 1 was due to the genre and the super heavy weight designer behind it (Bloodstained). My only kickstarted game I was suckered into backing without much initial justification was System Shock remaster. Bought plenty of pre-orders though, TW3 was on for 20% off for pre-order, I thought, why not.

I don't ever buy season pass during a pre-order, there is basically no point in doing so. Season pass is essentially a cross between pre-order and kickstarter until all DLCs are released.

See, the thing is that I have no issues with crowdfunding, even though I've genuinely lost money funding lemons. Crowdfunding is inherrintly high-risk and that is communicated and known from the onset. Not so with "Pre-order now and recieve this part of the game 'free'"

Every time I see another "don't preorder" thread I preorder another game ... Just saying.

If you don't want to preorder don't, but stop telling people what they should be doing. I find it as annoying as Jehovah's witness nuts knocking on my door and trying to tell me how to live my life.

Every time I see a thread popup anywhere on the internet telling me not to preorder, I preorder another game on my wishlist. Instead of putting an end to preorders you people need to put an end to no preorder PSAs, first. I've cleaned out my entire wishlist of forthcoming games just in the past month because of the internet's self-righteous characters. In fact, it was a no preorder PSA that made me preorder No Man's Sky. Thanks for that, as it's one of the most engrossing games I've played in awhile.

Or you're lying just to be edgy/contrarian.

Crowdfunding these days is more like voting with your wallet. Win or Lose you're just kinda making a statement saying "hey theres an audience for this" and I think most people still crowdfunding stuff are cognisant of the potential loss they may take in the investment.

I saw the new Dues Ex came out the other day and the gameplay trailer looked pretty cool I was about to nag a copy even at $60 until I was confronted with the massive amount of negativity both in regards to bugs and the DLC complaints. Honestly $60 is birdfeed to me, but I decided against buying it. I might pick it up when its cheap and the publisher is isn't making any money off the Day one and preorder but you know thats the best I can do. I choose to vote with my wallet. I know that seems stupid to some people but its my philosophy.

I dont preorder, I'll invest in certain early access titles for which I have some faith in the developer, but its rare.

Preordering doesnt actually help anybody but the Publisher. When it take 3 hours to download and install a game these days I don't see the point.

Even if they were lying, it wouldn't change that some of us are tired of "Never preorder anything evah!!!11!!!" threads all the time. Personally, I hardly ever preorder anything. I think I "preordered" the Tomb Raider reboot with a nice discount after all the reviews were out and I loved the hell out of that game. Preordering isn't always a horrible thing. The only game I regret preordering was WatchDogs, but of the handful that I've "preordered" (I usually do so with a nice discount hours\days before it releases if the buzz is good) I don't feel very burned.

You don't train a dog with inconsistency. Devs and publishers are the dog, you're rewarding bad behavior.
Oh no, I've saved myself money and bought games I enjoy that weren't buggy messes on release. I shall forever be shamed.

In my specific case, I've bought a handful of games when there were enough reviews to know they were actually good and not buggy messes and I was able to get a preorder discount. I think you're confusing what I do concerning preorders with preordering every game under the sun that I have any interest in, which I do not do. The vast majority of games that I buy are discounted after they're released. I generally don't do preorders, but there are ways to get preorders and not be disappointed. I thought I was clear enough in my initial post. :p

If you want specifics, I preordered Tomb Raider hours before it was released and I think I might have done it with the South Park game as well. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, I've gotten a few that worked fine for me and I had a lot of fun with on preorder.

So tired of the Battlefront hate. It's "not cool" to like a game so most just have to say how crappy it is to go along with everyone else. The game is fine. The hate is irrational.

Not if you actually end up liking the game you preordered. I have ordered quite a few games this year and have been happy with all of them. Yes, even No Man's Sky. This whole deal about "rewarding bad behavior" simply isn't true. We base our judgments on what we see about the game before it's released, and we buy based on that. Are we disappointed sometimes? Sure, but that's just like life. You can't not do what you want because you're afraid to be disappointed; otherwise nothing would change. I say; buy whatever you want whenever you want. It's your money. The people going on a crusade to try to get other people to stop pre-ordering is stupid and 100% ineffective. Just mind your own business and do whatever you want. It's your money and your decision. It doesn't stop the bad game from being released, and it doesn't give the more developer more time to make a game that would be worthwhile. Everyone is on a schedule and a fixed budget. So if you end up disappointed by a game after getting it on launch... then that is nothing new and will not be the last time either. Bad press effects game development practices more now than anything... even the stupid no pre-order white knights. Just look at No Man's Sky; in my opinion they are getting way too much of a bad wrap but I also love the game so that's just my opinion.

I only highly highly doubt OP's premise that hype surrounding games prevents said game from being released. I am sure it is a factor, but a marginal one if that. There is way more stuff that goes into that process than hearing what the community has to say about it.

I preordered Orange Box - was happy. I preordered Diablo II was happy ( Still have the all powereful Diablo action figure) was happy, preordered Duke Nukem Forever - Still have the stupid mini-bust - never preorder again*

*This statement subject to change if HL3 comes to fruition.

So even though not-preordering won't have any effect on the quality, release schedule, or budget of the game... we should keep preordering because its better to take the chance... because reasons? There is absolutely no benefit to pre-ordering other than the ones they've yanked from the game itself as bait to get you to preorder.

If you wanna take a chance, that's what Kickstarter is for. Pre-ordering is giving a (usually already rich) company an interest free loan, with no guarantees of ROI.

Talks about interest-free loans with no guarantees of ROI... advocates Kickstarter.

lol

Like a few others in this thread have already stated, I rarely preorder. When I do it typically always involves a continuation of a series i love with a developer with a proven track record. I also only preorder when I can get a 20% or larger discount from GMG or the like. I've never regretted a pre-order, but then again the number of games I've preordered i can count on one hand, the most recent being Mankind Divided.

Ignores certain words to think they're smart :bucktooth:. ("if you want to take a chance")

You didn't address what I stated. You claim pre-ordering affects nothing, but that we should keep doing it anyways, because why?

You claim that "bad press" is what effects game development the most, but are unable to see the correlation between upset customers and bad press. Unable to comprehend that just accepting these practices of deceit encourages them to keep doing it, and taking it further each time; which many companies have attempted time and time again. Sony? Rootkits on devices. MS? Tried to take away used-copies from Xbox. EA? Wanted to do subscription to play their titles. Everyone else? Paid DLC for what was once free, to include cheat codes in single player games.

But no, forget all that, just bend over take it.

It seems this needs to be put into simple words for some to understand.

Preordering gets you nothing but rewarding a game developer for incomplete games. That's it. Its that simple. Time and time again shit games are released at launch to a preorder hype fest that only comes crashing down onto the userbase a couple days later.(aka no mans sky). "But but but, I can get a refund!" Well, how about you stop rewarding them for shit/incomplete games before you can even play it, that way you dont have to get a refund in the first place.

Oh, you're gonna get a special preorder only skin/gun/points..etc. Congratulations, you are paying extra for content that was already made and taken out of the game.

The "dream" is maybe preordeing stops, we get games that aren't complete lies or disasters for the first few months of release, and we get the content that was originally made for the game actually included in the game(aka preorder bonuses and day one DLC bullshit). How could anyone be against this?

Now after reading the above facts, think about how retarded you look when you try and act e-tough and brag about "pre ordering 3 games because of this thread". You are basically standing up tall and letting everyone know that you are too stupid to understand that you are stupid.

It's true, if a trend developed where sales increased after the game was out for a week or so then developers would know that they actually had to sell a decent product. Back when you bought a Nintendo cartridge they didn't mail you the fixed cartridge a month later.
