I'm probably better off buying a 9800pro for my system.. it performs terribly in CS:S with the x800xl. 1024x768 with no tweaks, 30 fps on a server with 25 players. It's fucking annoying. Is there any way that I could disable pipes on my card, make it act like an 9800XT or shit like that, lol? I feel like shit having this card. My AthlonXP can't keep up with its speed without bottlenecking even with full AA/Af on.

up the FSB and overclock your athlon XP... (perhaps work on a cooling duct mod for it...bringing in fresh air directly over the hs/f)

It should be a little better at about 2.4 Ghz +

But yea...the Axp is significantly slower...sorry

... I thought ur father will give u around 700 bux so u can build ur own s939 with venice cpu or somewat there.

Why would your motherboard/cpu bottleneck it? Your mobo has a 400mhz fsb. Thats faster than my cpu and I have no issues with my card.. See the sig.

If your only pulling 30fps at your native res, you might want to look into other issues with your rig. Driver problems are my guess.

Because he does not have a 64bit CPU his is an ATHLON XP.

So it is by design...slower than your 3000.

True, but 3200 barton core is still a great chip. He shouldnt have any problems with bottlenecking an x800 on a 400mhz fsb mobo.

My best guess is that you are having driver issues. I would suggest using the ati tool to uninstall any driver you have and start fresh with the 5.8 or 5.9 catlysts.

My 6800GT and Mobile Barton were really not that bad. Obviously, downgrading the cards performance is misguided, but I think by even being bothered enough to look for solutions like this shows there may be something wrong. It really shouldn't be abysmal. Could OC the cpu some, and also bench a 3dmark03 or 05 run to be sure things are in order... and may end up going toward updated drivers for everything.

It doesnt matter that much about the FSB, but if your CP cant handle the info the vid card sends it, then yes you are bottlenecked.

I would suggest getting a new CPU/mobo, that should fix your problem.

Ill tell you this i bought my x800xl before i got my amd64 rig setup, i had this:
AMD Athlon xp 3200
512mb ddr400
x800xl
40gb maxtor 7200rpm
Gigabyte GA7n400pro2 mobo
i played css at 1280x1024 resolution with awesome 50 fps average with everything maxed out.

i get about 50fps average here as well. 1280x1024 4xaa 16xaf everything maxed out.

driver or software problems.

Your FPS problem lies somewhere else, i doesn't take a fast machine to play CSS. My work machine 1.7ghz 9600SE 512mb RAM plays it just fine at 1024x768. Your machine should smoke it.

Try running adaware and scan your system for viruses, disable useless start up programs. You should not be having any problems running this game .... it doesn't take much at all.

Everyone is taking the Idea of bottle necking way to far. It just means that your vid card could do more but the CPU can't send it enough info (or the game is taking up enough CPU work to negate a faster video card) a perfect example is HL2 as the even a G4MX can stay with a GTX if the CPU is fast enough. He should not be getting slower FPS with a faster card, if the CPU was bad enough he should be matching a slower card in FPS not losing it.

If it worked fine with 9800 then you shouldn't be getting any worse now. Try driver cleaner and the newest drivers.

so, should i get this and be able to upgrade to a PCIe card without upgrading the mobo?

ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Socket 939 ULi M1695

WHAT?! Newegg doesn't provide the Msi k8n Neo2 Platinum anymore?

I defrag with Diskeeper 9.0 professional everyday, scan and delete spywares with CounterSpy 1.5, run Crap Cleaner too, and when my pc starts up, there's only 24 processes and 125mb out of 1024mb. Using 5.9 APi

Yea you definitely got something else going on. I have an Athlon XP 2400, 1.25 gig RAM, and a 6600GT and I don't get any bottlenecking w/ the processor. It runs at 2.0 GHz. I can't imagine that an ATI vs. Nvidia could be causing a bottleneck. Don't relly ahve any good advice other than you really shouldn't be getting any bottlenecking unless you start going above a 1280 rez.

Wait wait. You have a XP3200...and you XL is bottle necking you?
My XP3200 does not bottle neck my X800XT with my AA and AF up.
Well I know it does but not so much to make any game, except Far Crys last level, a bad experience.

To the point then dude. Sort out your drivers. My 2800+ AXP with a 6800GT got 5099 in 3dm05, i get a 600 point increase from going to an A64 939 @ 2.5Ghz. I thought the source engine was optimized for ATI. You should we gettin more than 50FPS easily!

I am aware that he want to have no bottleneck system.

This may sound funny, too. I can image him buyin S939 mobo with FX-57 and 7800GTX video card. He won't be happy with his next set up either way.

Edit: I played on his computer, and I see no problem with his current set up at all.

Heh, I take it is if that you happen to have a "burden" of knowing a guy?

As a previous poster stated, if your cpu is bottlenecking your VC, then you will get the same performance no matter how good your VC is. For example, an AXP 2500+ with 9800pro performs the same as a AXP 2500+ with 7800gtx. You cannot get dramatically lower performance with a better VC and the same CPU. Uninstall drivers, reboot in safe mode, use "driver cleaner" or a similar program, reboot in regular mode, hit "cancel" when "found new hardware" comes up, then manually install new ATI drivers. Also check things like realtime virus scanners and distributed computing projects that can interfere with game performance.

On the hardware side, what about your power supply? If you can't supply adequate power to the new card, you will encounter problems. If you're using the stock PS from the Centurion 5, you may very well not be providing enough power. I had the same PS that came with my CM C5 and sold it, replacing it with the Antec 480w I've used for 3 years.

Bah, XP 3200+ is/was a beast. This doesn't explain why he's getting crappy performance.

When I had a P4 3.0E Prescott (oOoOo 32bit) and a 9800Pro, and then eventually a 6600GT, I always played at 1680x1050 (16:10) to completely fill out my widescreen, 2xAA 16xAF and nailed the same 30-60fps.

Now with a 3700+ sandy and a X800XL, 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF, my framerate averages 90-120fps, never going below 60fps.
