Bare with me, I have to use the equalizer a lot on my pc (realtek hd audio manager).

Is there some way to just have a simple equalizer sit on my desktop, like a widget/app of some sort?

Winamp does do it, though it's a very basic graphic equalizer... Though that would be the kind I'd call "simple," so it seems to work for your request.
 
diarh34, you might also look into iZotope Ozone (plugin for Winamp) for a valve equalizer type sound. The free version is great with default settings. Otherwise Foobar does have a nice equalizer, most other players with Plug-In support have third party options.
