This Machine Is Crazy!!

and why is this so much better than an FX-55 with 6800U SLI?
(guess the whole dual proc thing is just funny to me)

but otherwise, I'd like the hard drives :p(except I'd rather get a reliable brand)

Do I really need to tell you? Are you just assuming that gaming performance is all the computers are good for?

General jist is, when you spend $1000 on video cards.... I figure you can tell the reason.

Oh, and whoopdy doo if he he can run two programs at once

He runs medical imaging software on that machine and games in his free time. That machine has 16GB of ram for all the imaging software to use.

ive been looking at a similar but stripped down setup.
same mobo, 2 GT's instead of ultras,
246's instead of 250's
2 GB instead of 16GB
2 raptors in raid for OS
and 2 other big drives for data

but, even stripped down, its just too much cash
$3.5K

supposedly, the mobo allows for some minor OC'ing, but details are not available yet

I just see stuff like that as overkill unless its actually being used for some productive purpose.... still pretty though.. :p

he's proven that he uses software that can even stress the system he has now so....

He says he uses part of the ram as a virtual drive. Does this mean you could load game data into the virtual ram drive and have it load from there instead of the hdd while playing? That would be sweet as hell.

wow, that is messed up. perfect example of way too much money being spent on a PC for no real reason

Yes that is true, but everytime you turn off the machine the virtual drive gets wiped.

Hmm...I wonder if there is any way to setup a virtual ramdrive the way hibernation works so when you turn off your comp it writes everything in memory to the harddrive.

I should bust my way into the supercomputer lab here and take a picture of it so you all could drool over 2,200 G5 processors.....but seriously, all that system is to me is a hunk of cash. Great for him, but it doesn't pertain to anything at all useful for me.

i could say the same about the 2200 g5's. he definately has a killer system. whether its a waste of money is up to the buyer not you. if he thinks its worth it more power to him.

I am FIng Drooling all over my new chair i jsut got :D that computer puts mine to shame times 10

I have also...
once you go dual you can never go back :)

Why do people constantly write that games do not use multiple CPUs. Games do not have to use multiple CPUs, windows/linux DOES. The game gets 100% CPU time from one CPU and windows uses the other CPU. Not quite that simple, but that is the effect.

Well yeah. You could write an app that does that. I am sure one exists if you look around for it.

Everyone have different goals :D Mine are gaming and benching. That rig is amazing for different purpose ;)

Question...do they even make 2GB PC3200 modules? Or is he using PC2100/2700 stuff?

That is true, but I was not looking at it from that angle. It is obvious that a person who buys a system like that is using it for more than gaming.

Dude read the whole thread, he uses it for medical imaging when not gaming. He had a post where he stated that with some MRI's and CT's open it could use 9GB of memory just itself. God damn.

Solid state hardrives are wicked fast , I wonder if he has a progy that allows him to use the system ram in that fashion. imagine loading an entire game into system memroy

I would be jealous but I don't have 8 grand (let alone 200$) to spend on PC parts.

$8,000? With that money, they guy bought the monitor, two graphics cards, and the memory. The system costs much more than that...

Nice system.

Caveat: In 3 months when his quad raid0 fails, it won't be fun anymore. SCSI raid with redundancy is the way to go if you have money.

Yea thats like a 15k-20k machine easy....i would love to see some benchmarks on that bad boy.

I saw this post a few days ago and I am just floored by how amazing this computer is. I mean heck I have a nice machine, but this guy is massively taking dumps on mine. No telling how much it all cost him.

I could never need that sort of machine. 2.8 ghz and a x800 xt and im set for a long time. The only thing i would want after that would be an xbox cluster a few old macs and one amd sempron machine for every major distribution of linux and freebsd.

with all the money spent on that killer rig, i would much rather buy myself another car with the 8+ grand used to build that comp.

That is awesome and no doubt it was the government money that he spent on it. I am sure he gets tired of giving so much money away every year in taxes so of course I would do the same. And that is one wicked write-off!

$10 says his 4-drive RAID 0 crashes and he shits himself. If you can afford all that surely you can afford a few SCSI drives in RAID 5.
