This always comes up, but will say this again like I did with the PS4 PRO; which is to say that what they are doing at the price point they are at is nothing short of impressive. I have a great 4K set and a PS4 Pro and regardless of what 4K Checkerboarding or whatever tech they are using to make games looks as good as they do is astounding. If the rumors are true of Scorpio being $499 then that is an incredible deal for a machine that not only can run native 4K games, but can also play 4K UHD Blu Rays. What the PS4 Pro is able to do for $399 you could not do with a PC for less than $700. Same story with the Scorpio considering the amount of power that thing has.
I know it is easy to want to feel superior and be cynical in regards to consoles, but I believe some credit is due to Microsoft and Sony for pushing their tech further at a good price point. Hell, consoles are even starting to introduce cross-platform play and with the case of Skyrim and Fallout 4 even have mods now which PC gamers have enjoyed for years. Finally consoles are approaching par with the PC in terms of gaming, but still beat PC when it comes to value for tech. I love PC Gaming as much as everyone here, but I can also acknowledge the very positive progress and direction consoles have been going.
I would mention that is is being achieved with dedicated hardware meaning that while PC games have to account for about a million different configurations of hardware, console games only have to account for one. Just look at Uncharted 4 on PS4 Pro and on a 4K TV... it is still the best looking game I have ever seen on any platform including PC. Watchdogs 2 in 4K on PS4 looks incredible, and so does Ratchet and Clank. 4K is very possible on the consoles albeit with some other methods like checkerboarding.
I didnt read your reply... but i can just say.. you way over analyzed my comment...
Wasn't necessarily a response to you, but rather just me saying that seeing first-hand what the PS4 Pro can do with 4K at $399 is very impressive no matter how you slice it.
They are right now the winners. But will the next Xbox cause enough of a wave to make a difference?
I feel ya... in all seriousness, i used to love consoles back in the day when each competitor had custom hardware and all the magazines were a buzz about it... now they just seem like a shell of there former selves.
It was inevitable though. Each maker wants the best hardware for low cost and wants to be easy to develop on. So that ends up being why they swing back toward the pc architecture as the proprietary formats caused problems in the past. And now with the demand for graphics and game complexity, you don't want to be the console that is the hardest to code for because then you end up being neglected by devs.
Hard to compare to 'the olden days' because games had less lines in them than the magazines that advertised the game.
And for those that think sony can't be dethroned, it happens all the time. People didn't think sony could be topped after ps2, but they dropped the ball on ps3 launch and had to play catch up for a while. This round it was microsoft that dropped it at launch.
There are still quite a few people unhappy with the psn network, that could still become their achilles heel.
I kind of hope it goes back and forth, keeps them pushing. Seems to me that whichever console company leads the previous generation, doesn't improve as much in the next, arrogance maybe or the underdog trying really hard?
Why does every console article have to turn into a war with PC gaming?
Sure games back then had less code, but the hardware was on the edge back then, a golden age imo. 3D was all the buzz, exotic hardware pushing polygons, man i miss those days. Now its same hardware (basically)... 4k bla bla. However!... VR well thats a whole new golden age of gaming for me... and I'm super excited to see where it leads.
Agreed. I think too the general populace wasn't all about "pc can do it better" which it could at the time and has always been a step ahead. People were excited about more colors or better graphics but there has been a shift to where that doesnt impress anymore. Like you said things are moving toward 4k and vr and what do you see more often than not? 4k is pointless unless you sit the correct angle from the screen no more than a few feet away etc etc, and vr is just a gimmick.
I am excited for the constant evolving of gaming, i do kind of like the small upgrade consoles that come out more often, not sure how that will work in the long term but it is better than making games on +8yr old hardware.
I think a big force behind consoles too was arcade games. Those always were ahead of console and were kind of the bar for a while. You would start to love the next console because it was so close to playing at the arcade (things like mortal kombat, house of the dead etc).
So far i have only experienced psvr and the clunky samsung phone one. Really would love to try elite dangerous on a good vr setup but sadly my 960m laptop i dont think is enough.
Native 4k for me since 2014. These consoles still aren't impressive and I can get most games between my pc and a Wii U. Now it's the Nintendo switch, but I am holding off on that until more games hit.I'm with you man, it's cool that they kinda caught up, but on the other hand everyone is treating this like the second coming lol. I find it very funny. It's been done years ago 4k on PC,
Nothing to see here move on Yes it will be the most powerful console so far but stop over-analysing it's getting stupid.
Consoles shitty hardware is holding PC products back, at least that is why I dislike them and I imagine others do as well.
Developers almost always build to the lowest common denominator (note common)
So you're actually asking why a 13 year old game that has one of the largest playerbases in the world has more conservative graphics than brand new titles? Gee, maybe the same reason Counter-Strike and League of Legends don't push the envelope, they don't want to shed any of their money-making playerbase with a LONG history behind it?That is such a load of crap. Its like saying the new McClaren 'only' has 900 hp because the Mustang is holding it back with only 400 hp.
Why do some games that have no plans on coming to console end up weak in the hardware department such as WoW? What the hell does a console have to do with it? This entire myth is bone headed.
If anything, you should be more disappointed when AMD or NvIdia release anything lower than a GTX 1080 then worrying about what consoles are doing. Those lower cards will have WAY more effect on how PC developers design games in the future than anything else.
