So I get my system together, 3800+ x2, ASRock Mobo, 1 Gig of OCZ and Throw in my 6800 AGP Vanilla and WOW! I can not beleive how well it performs!

I Figured I would wind up with a good midrange system but this blows away my gamming expectiations. On my P4 2.53 with 512mb and the 6800, Farcry would run well on medium graphics at 800x600, no AA. I am now playing at Full speed with every option on VERY HIGH, 1024x768 and 2x AA!!! I cant beleive it!

Same with Doom III, I had to play at medium settings at 640x480 to have a smooth playable experience.. Now im using High settings and 1024x768!

The CoD2 Demo, Incredible! Plays at full tilt!

I'm just a bit taken back by how well everything has turned out with my "Budget" system!!

anything using an X2 isnt midrange or budget :p
agreed. budget = something like a venice 3000+. 6800nu fits the budget name tho :p

I'm definatley elated with the system. I have been using Intel chips for a long time, I am still in disbeleif that a 2ghz AMD will smoke a 2.5ghz intel even though I understand the technology behind it.. I think a few more rounds of that CoD2 Demo will clear my head though,, :p

I can say without hesitation that Buying an 3800+ is a great investment for any gamer!

Ya X2 3800 rocks, and is easily overclockible. Stock its at 2000 I am at 2300 with nothing but air cooling. Im bumping the frint side bus 5Mhz a day and watching for general stability. CPU is still underload 38 deg.

Keep on going...I run 2.5 at stock vcore! 2.6 runs great but quite frankly takes too much voltage to be stable, resulting in high temps with any quiet air cooling. When it was on water it could handle the heat load, but for now I am using the Zalman 7700Cu...and 2.5 is quite fast....

Are you serious...u couldnt play d3 at any higher res with a 6800??? And even after ur upgrade u can only run that resolution? Either u want astonomical high FPS to consider smooth, or ur video card is got a problem IMHO.

I have a Dell laptop with a 1.6 pm and a 32mb Radeon 9000 :( and I can run d3 at 800*600 med settings with 40+ fps, and ur 6800 with 15x the speed and 8x the memory cant match the performance of a 5 year old card.

I played doom 3 at 1280x1024 and then 1024x768 on a AMD XP Barton 2500+ OC'd go 2.6ghz, 1GB Ram, 9700 PRO. And I played it at pretty high settings.

Take the red graphics card and you wake up in your room feeling like shit.

Take the green graphics card and see how deep the rabbit hole really goes..

Both systems had the same 6800...

What the fuck dude? I played at the same settings (far cry) on my system. o_O And definately higher settings on Doom. But, since I don't know your previous rig (if it's in your sig, excuse me, I'm fucking lazy. XP), I guess it'd be something to do with lack of RAM. But, heh, xD

The X2 is what i want, from what I've heard, I just don't wanna go to anything less. >.>

Good to see you like your new AMD system, but I can't believe that you weren't able to play at higher settings on your P4. Was it OCed. I had a 2.53 P4 @ 3.125GHz a 6800GT and 1GB RAM and was able to play D3 at 1600x1200 high settings, but no AA.

I realize that.

Ah, so it was a reference to his user name?
I'd almost agree with it, but, Gainward made some fucking outstanding NV40 cards.

I think the main difference in performance was due to having 1GB of RAM as opposed to 512MB that you had before. The games you play all perform much better with 1GB.

I Bought a Coolermaster Hyper 6 Copper for it and I plan to OC once I get my SATA Drive in with a Fresh Copy of Windows.

On the P4, 640x480 was the best way to play without getting a glitch in the graphics. Now im playing it at 1024x768, High Settings.

Sorry I wasnt clear there.

Very Plausible. I had a tough time with Getting Doom 3 to play well on the old system for some reason. I actually played for several levels on the higher settings, but the Jerky Performance kept me from enjoying it. I shelved it for about a year and then went back to it playing at 640x480 to finish the game. There must have been a couple of bottle necks along the way. I actually Upgraded from a GF 4600ti to the 6800 vanilla just for Doom 3.. It made a Hughe Difference, but still wasnt the great experience that I was hoping for with all of the eye candy.

So.. wait.. the point of this thread is that you upgraded from an "antique (in computer world terms)" 533mhz fsb, 2.53 ghz, 32 bit, processor to a dual core, 4 ghz, (2 2ghz processors - so.. "4 ghz") 64 bit, 1000-2000 mhz "FSB" system and you are surprised it's faster? Oh, and you doubled the ram, too.

Wow.. So, like.. If I upgrade from my 1995 cadillac concours with a 300 hp engine to a 2006 XLR-V with a 450 hp engine (and .. about 700lbs less weight) I should be shocked if ti's faster?

This is even sillier because of the fact that it's well known that farcry can take advantage of the "enhancements" of your processor.

Why don't you take your thread crapping somewhere else....

Your old processor just wasn't enough to drive your video board. I've read several articles that have mentioned that processor less than 3ghz (or AMD 3000+ and up) the videoboard isn't using it's full potential. So, technically, game performance would have seen big improvements no matter what CPU you got over that minimum.

But, Gratz on your X2. It's a great processor. I have the 4400+ X2 that replaced a 3500+ and I'm loving it. As you can see the 3800+ X2 is a killer processor for gaming and everything ese.

I am amazed that you were able to find the keys to type that man..

I Applaud you, it must have taken all night.

Anyways, back to the thread,

griffinhart, I think you are on to something there, I know Games require a lot of GPU performance, but there has to be that base support from the rest of the system to drive that. I wonder what the minimum processor threshold is for the 7800 Series?

there's an easy way to find out:
start at stock speeds, run a few benches, a time demo in HL2 + doom3, 3dmark05, record both cpu and overall score
drop the cpu multi 1x, run tests again
repeat until you get to 5he 5x multi

display results. you will see how video performance scales with processor :D

Strangely enough, I get better benches using 240x10 on the cpu and having my ram timings tighter at spec speeds and CAS2...

At 250x10 I have to go to CAS2.5, even with 100mhz more cpu I get slightly lower benches....

Now if I had some ram that could stay tighter, well...I ain't gonna go buy another $350 of ram... :p

the basis of my story is, my ram hates anything over spec, I can make 206 at the tight timings after that it goes to shit regardless of voltage....

what exactly are you benching anyhow?

EVERYONE'S FAVORITE....3DM05....going to run some Far Cry benches here in a few....
always run it 2-3 times... scores fluctuate, even at the same clocks ;)

You should be able to player at much higher res and get better fps with that system...my guess is you dont have all your motherboard drivers etc properly installed. Heck on my old system with a p2.4c 9800pro I got better frames than that :)

It all depends on personal preference and "how many frames per second" is acceptable for YOU...some can handle 25fps and call it smooth, I cannot. In fact, to me that is downright UGLY and CHOPPY....I don't like less than 45fps, period, period, period.

Now here comes the old "your eyes can't see more than 30fps" argument  , which is WRONG and applies really to TV more than anything....you CAN see or tell the difference more than 30fps and it has been proven scientifically that your eyes can see well over 60fps and sensitive individuals can tell the differnce between 60 and 100 even....

If it didn't matter once you hit 30fps, then why do some people get headaches at 60hz refresh on CRT's? At 60hz I can SEE the flicker and it drives me bonkers...uggg...
