As the title says "this is probably a stupid question...", 6600GT or X700 Pro? Which one is better/faster and why? I'm willing to stop being an ATi fan-boy and switch (or stay) to which ever card is faster, I noticed they are priced similarly with the X700 Pro being cheaper. All input is greatly appreciated

Both ATI and nVidia have done an excellent job with their mainstream PCI E cards and we will see how we go in the near future with retail versions of the cards but I think we can honestly say that people are more excited about SLI then a retail X700PRO which might just give nVidia the edge this time. And with word floating around that nVidia’s upcoming Intel chipset will also support SLI it will be great to not only let AMD people have this option but also Intel users.

I'd go for the 6600GT, myself. The only stupid question is one you already know the answer to ;).
 
I've owned both. The X700Pro just isn't as fast as the 6600GT. The 6600GT is faster in virtually every game I own. I won't bother listing them. I'll just say it's most of the popular ones.

Beyond that the X700Pro has some driver issues. Currently there are some strange artifacting problems with the latest Catalyst drivers. HardOCP's review of the X700 series pointed that out. Mine did the same thing. Which is why I exchanged it for a 6600GT.

I also couldn't get most of the overclocking utlities to OC the X700Pro at all. They didn't support it. Not even the latest versions of ATi Tool did the trick for me. I'd also like to point out how noisy and irritating the X700Pro's cooling solution is.

The 6600GT is the way to go between the two. The possibility of course for going SLi is worth mentioning and Pixel Shader 3.0 support is a bonus as well.
