This is it, the final decision: E6600 or E6400?

I'm preordering tonight. :D I want this upgrade to be a huge step up from my 3.2GHz Prescott, and hopefully last me as long as my 800MHz P3 did (I upgrade on like a 5-year-cycle). I have a killer HSF, and am more than willing to try overclocking again (learning overclocking on a Prescott is a very disenhearting experience for a newbie).

Like everyone has said, the biggest choice here is cache. I can always add MHz since Conroe looks to be a beat of an overclocker, but will the extra 2MB of cache impact performance much (given that it's shared and all that)?

Let the suggestions fly!

i just saw those, eek :\ ~$350 or so

i think i'll just wait for this price hopefully

Conroe E6600 2.40GHz/1066MHz 4MB Q3'06 $316

XS is overloaded again everybody is reading about the Kentsfield benchies . This is big news you know.

If we're going to have this huge shortage being predicted, $30 is worth it to gaurantee not having to wait lord knows how many weeks before it's back in stock.

Since I am buying through a boutique place, probably, I'll have to wait.
If you don't have to wait and can afford it I would definately reccomend getting the E6600.

i won't be building till Aug 15~ or so when school starts back up

my summer gaming has gone to waste :(

I placed my order through buy.com for the E6600 with 2nd-day Air the other day :). Sure, it's about $30 more than the initial predicted launch price, but I don't want to be going weeks without my main computer up and running. I already have the new RAM, just need a good mATX board for Conroe to come out and once the chip comes, I'll be good to go! I have an FS/FT thread with my previous parts up (the CPU sold, but the RAM and motherboard are still looking for good hoomes :D).

I saw benchmarks somewhere showing the difference in the cache from a post on Xtremesystems that linked to a chinese site, it was somewhere around 10-12% at equal clock speeds if I recall correctly. However, you need to bear in mind that the higher multiplier (9x on the E6600 vs. 8x on the E6400) and the extra cache will give you a much higher overall overclocked performance level when all's said and done. The price difference is around $90, so if you can afford it, go for it! On the E6600 vs. the E6700, it's a $250 price difference for just the 10x multi and 266mhz stock boost, and I don't think that is a worthwhile purchase unless you're a hardcore overclocker in which case you probably would want the Extreme Edition X6800 in any case ;).

An important point on this as well is that these are the release prices.

Based on good old supply and demand these prices could go up significantly and quickly.

Please correct me if I am wrong but IIRC Intel is still making their old chips so demand might quickly outstrip supply. If that happens you could see the cost of the Conroe chips rapidly start climbing. What was it, 35% of production would be the new chips?

Honestly it is more of a wait and see for me.

If Intel decides to push a real price war with AMD then a lot of you and me could soon afford a nice power boost in performance. If not then demand could soon push Conroe prices up around, or beyond, comparable AMD chip levels and AMD may skip price cuts completely.

While I don't want to see AMD go under I hope there is at least a little price war and that Velocity Micro, Maingear, PCC, and others soon adjust CPU option prices accordingly for us non-DIYers.

25% initially is the number I've heard. Supply and demand is what I'm worried about, as well as complete sell-out, hence why I pre-ordered :).

Sonofa...ETA 08-04-2006 in Texas? Rats! That blows my plan out of the water, I'm not waiting until August...

That's just for that specific warehouse, not the whole country (or Texas in particular). The magic of shipping :D.

I'm not going to bother with pre-orders. I go out of town the July 20th till August 1. By that time all online suppliers should have a good stock of E6600's and P5B MB's

I have a bad feeling that those numbers are for one of the wholsalers (tech data, Ingram, etc.)

If so, Don't expect your 6600 until late Q3 at the earliest. I'll bet that Dell has most of the first overall allocation tied up, and the resellers will be fighting for those relatively few chips.

Too bad nobody has a clue of intel ship schedules and initial production rates. Intel may be able to backfill quickly.

Umm...in case you haven't noticed, I'm looking to spend in the neighborhood of $250-$300, not $1000

Then the E6600 is out of your price range. You're very unlikely to find an E6600 for under at least $340-$350 shipped at launch.

Agreed.

I don't think the 6600 will drop below $330 for quite a while.

Definitely. There is no reason for retailers to drop prices on Conroe because demand is high and there is no competition for performance. AMD will be slashing prices on their X2 line but even when they do that their not going to be but a little bit cheaper then Conroe and Intel will also be dropping prices for their Pentium 4/D line of processors which will make great budget processors. People will pay more for Conroe as long as it mops the floor with the competition and with availability likely taking a few months to scale e-tailers like Newegg and Monarch will enjoy higher prices. Prices wont drop till demand drops and availability rises. Maybe by September/October we'll see them priced at closer to MSRP. Who knows what can happen though. But Intel has millions to ready for the OEM's so thats going to put a squeeze on what gets shipped to the retail channel.

I've already determined I'll be paying roughly $350 for the E6600 and am fine with that.
