I agree :) I'm going to sit and think up some ideas to throw around too.. I'm a graphic designer though, not a business graduate ;), but I should be able to help somehow hopefully :)

I would love to see more companies take an interest in this

Newegg and Tigerdirect offer deals in the [H]otdeals section...why not some choice hardware for us folders? ;)
 
It would be GREAT if the 'egg and TG got involved. We're not too picky.

- P35 MoBo's under $50
- 2 x 1 GB RAM (DDR2 800 for us Quad users) under $30
- Case with 80+ PSU for (hmmm) $40
- G0 Q6600 for (double hmmm) $160
- 160GB HDD for $30 (for those of us that prefer HDD over notfred or other)

That about does it :)

Edit: Speaking of, I'm getting a lot of responses about configurations, and I'm doing lots of reading. I do need some clarification in general...is processor or GPU more valuable with one of these systems? Some of what I've read makes me think that CPU is less of an issue than GPU with these systems, but then it appears that others don't run graphics at all. Can you explain the differences to me?
 
I've emailed the PR and tech divisions of the American Cancer Society, Kommen Foundation,Roswell Park Cancer Institute,Sloan-Kettering and MD Anderson.......so far no replies.

These guys are either too busy or they don't want people doing things for free; whereas they could send them donations. Not to be a stick-in-the-mud, but I think there is some obvious jealousy involved in these big time organizations.:eek:

I'll keep trying.;)

I think you might be right to an extent. I have always wondered why some of the big organizations and foundations haven't chosen to become involved with or support F@H to some degree..... how hard would it be for the big organizations to borg a few boxen here and there... or at least recognize the work we all donate....

Doesn't make any sense to me.... but of course there is a really good chance that I don't know what the hell I'm talking about either sooooo.........;)

Let me try to explain this : When you are running F@H, the most solicited component is the CPU and since there is also SMP clients available, a Quad core is the best choice for the best ratio of points vs cost. The GPU is also a possible choice but only with the ATI 2xxx, 3xxx and 4xxx cards (folding client limitation, no support for nvidia) so if someone want to use this as a alternative, it should be available.

Around here, most of us are hardcore folders (a lot of them, me included will spend a few thousands to have 3-10 Q6600 boxes) and we learned to optimize the configuration for the best results for the value. We don't like wasting resources not optimally.

As some guys already said, the ideal folding configuration client (I'll list the options to cater to a broader audience) :

CPU : Q6600 (best) and E8400 (good). What matter is to have over 4 MB of cache since it is affected.
Motherboard : A good P35 with excellent overclockability with quads. The Abit IP35-E is the best bang for the buck but since it's discontinued, we need to look at something like this but not too expensive.
Videocard : Offer a array of choices ranging from a low-range ATI 3450 all the way to a 3870x2 Crossfire, depending on the price point.
Memory : Minimum 2 GB with preferably 4 GB.
PSU : Try to aim for a 80plus model since those are often running 24/7 so we try to be efficient.

The rest is not affected by F@H so use your standard options.

Anyway, I wish you good luck to try to make all this dream a reality and set a example for others to follow.

This is critical

I don't need another HDD (unless it is a TB and I'll buy that for my main rig, not a folding:p)

For us that run farms, a small, mostly quiet, space and energy efficient system would be great!

For me: mobo, ram, quad cpu, and a box with a psu is about all I need. Maybe throw a CD-ROM in for good measure :p


 
I would like to see a major computer retailer talk with asus, abit, or the like, and develop a Micro atx motherboard that could be used soley for barebone computers or folding.
They don't want to listen to the consumer of thier products. :rolleyes:
