hey [H]ardforum, I'm thinking of getting a 7990 ($919 on amazon) for a itx system (thinking pc-q25b). and have some questions.

According to the multiple reviews of the 7990 it seams I only really need a 600-650w psu is if have a I5-2500k paired with it. I'm I correct in thinking that?

Also anyone who has a 7990 how do you like it? is it as quiet as they say? one of the main things I'm thinking of doing is having a closed loop cooler for the cpu as exhaust so that the 7990 only gets fresh air.

mostly gaming at 2560x1600, movies.

As much as I love AMD as a company, I think the Titan would be a better card for you at this time..If you can hold off for another 10 days or so, AMD announced a new set of drivers that are supposed to fix a TON of X-fire issues via Frame Rate Metering..I would wait, see how those drivers perform, then make your decision..

Ok, I guess ill wait if its only 10 days. I was looking at the gtx690, but it seams at my res, the wider mem bus really helps.

I would wait and see how the frame pacing drivers sorts things out in 2 weeks time. The 7990 has a ton of raw power, but serious driver problems. A Titan is bad bang for buck. Dual 660s, 760s, 770s I would recommend.

7990 owner here. So far I'm really happy with it, it's quieter than the 2x7950 setup it replaced. I've had no problems with cooling the card, it generally stays around 80C on auto fan, but make sure you have good airflow as all the heat is dumped into your case.

Some of the more demanding games I've played on it are Metro Last Light, Sleeping Dogs, and The Witcher 2. Gameplay experience was super smooth in all. Didn't experience any stuttering whatsoever with VSync on. Crossfire has improved a lot since my old 2x5870 setup. You can definitely still see the runt frame effect with VSync off though, maybe this will be fixed once AMD gets the frame pacing driver out.

Also, I don't recommend the Titan. It is not enough for 2560x1600 on some of the recent games with AA and all the bells and whistles turned up. I had one before getting 2x7950 and was disappointed for what I paid. It's worth $700 at best. If you want to go NV dual 770s or 780s are a much better option, it makes NO sense to get the Titan for this res.

Btw here's a pic of the card in my case

Yeah this is a must. They said July 31st on twitter. But the beta results look promising.

I think it is hard to pass on 690s right now. They can be had for south of $700 on the forms.

If you are not mining then I think either a 690/780/titan is the way to go.

These 690a all sold for around $700.

Edit. Love the setup above though. Also 2 x 7950 is HOOTTTTT. They heated my whole room up. They had to go!

wow thanks for all the input guys. another Question: can the 7990 and a 7970 crossfire?

but ya, I'm torn between a used 690 for $700 or a 7990 for $919 and the games.

also, beside the prodigy and mercury s3, are they any other cases that would fit a 7990 and a h80 (or equivalent)

Seriously, make sure the case you have has excellent airflow. The 7990 dumps a lot of heat. I'm not trying to make that sound too negative. It uses a lot of power and that means heat. There's no way around it. IIRC, the card throttles to keep temps ≤ 80°C. That might be why x3sphere sees temps of ~80°C.

The NZXT cases that allow you to mount a fan on the back of the drive cages, or have a 200mm fan on the side of the case, blowing on the card would be good options.

I'm really glad you are enjoying your 7990, it's great seeing AMD succeed :p. That card has a lot of power behind it, and outperforms the 690 by quite a bit. So NOT get a Titan at that res. I think, read a bit more on peoples' experiences with the card, wait til the driver is released (July 31st) and see way comes of that. The 7990 seems like a good deal, though.

Ya, this is what im afraid of. I kind of want to replace my rig with an itx pc with 7990/690. But it seems to be a lot harder because of this fact. Been looking into cases like the lian li q25b, coolermaster 120, Silverstone sg08 for this job.

Thanks for your answer.. heat is not a deal breaker on the 2x7950 setup if the cards use 7970 pcb's as there are alot of waterblocks setups out there.

wait till September when AMD releases 9000 cards

even if you don't decide to get new one, all current cards will drop in price

Coolermaster HAF X is great for airflow.

You know how that goes. I would plan on a date about a month later than the scheduled releasd date. Will this be a serious gpu upgrade or just a incremental update?

Good to hear. I may put off buying the 7990. I wonder if they will release ghz edition like cards or just the vanilla ones first?

Freshly leaked info says it will be much sooner and the new cards gonna beat Titan. (it's all new architecture, one level up from current nvidias GK110)

If it overclocks well, too, well, then we have a monster :) Isn't the Accelero Xtreme cooler compatible with this series of cards? Will it be well capable of cooling them? I hav an Accelero on a 7950, so upgrading to a new card might be worth it if the cooler translates well into the next gen.

My 2nd 7990 is enroute... Powercolor V2 Malta ... It will be here Tuesday... Im stoked!

Have you considered 770(the 4gb versions) sli? It would bet the 7990, cost the same or less and use slightly less power and run a tad cooler.

Nvidia can't do this is why.

Plus I am sponsored by AMD so thats why I go AMD. Plus I have been a fan of theirs for a long time. I think image quality is better with AMD too ( My opinion ) plus Eyefinity ( Multi-Monitor ) works a lot better.

Here is a couple pics of my new rig. Notice the AMD Ruby chick on the front....

yea many think sli and surrond gaming is good on Nvidia, it isnt the best adaptive system out there pretty much like Apple. You are more likely to an easier and better experience with an amd set up.

Not that many that has the same exact screens.
