Heres a potential new one. I was screwing in the cooler and one of the screws snapped in half. I didntt believe I was overscrewing at all given that it was rotating with absolute ease. And after that snapped all the others took about 3 twist to come loose and I was doing them in turn so each was roughly as tight as the other. Anyway now I'm stuck as to what to do to at least get the end of the screw out of the motherboard...any ideas? Can't believe that happened.

And the backplate can't be moved with that screw in there so simply rotating that isn't going to help either.
 
Perhaps something like a drill just a little bit smaller than the screw, to drill a hole through it (i.e. like getting rid of rivets)?

got it out, was enough at the back to get some pliers and rotate the screw out using some small electrical ones and then building up to some bigger ones.

Now need to organise a new screw.
 
now the screws out i'm sort of concerned that even should i get a replacement, because that leg to the backplates collapsed if I reattach it I'll probably short circuit the board....


I might look at some small rubber washers. I don't think any of the legs are touching circuitry although one is close.

so so annoyed.
 
must be one of those rare things, I've always thought those screws were very strong.

Anyway you can buy replacement backplate with 4 screws.

That hardware was obviously faulty. There's no way you should have been able to break that screw.
Contact Thermalright for a replacement.

Yeah already have but given I'm in Australia I'm half tempted to just get a replacement here. I don't really see how both the backplate legs and the screw both gave up that easily but and it's sort of annoying the backplates stuck on the mobo for good now. Maybe one corner of the backplate gave in and lead to it being uneven and thats why the others were screwing in or something....to be honest I don't know. If one of the backplates legs did break 1st back thatd prob have made the rest uneven, lead to them being able to screw in more and potentially put strain on the screw leading to the snap. I can't say but yeah.

Anyway I've emailed them and I'll see what happens. In the mean time I'm tempted to just order a replacement regardless just because it'll be quicker.

I'm sure you were taking the right precautions but just a reminder that when you're putting in your screw to always install them in a diagonal manner. first place one screw then place the one right across in a diagonal then place the next one then diagonal again. When tightening make sure to balance it and not fully tighten one screw before the others.
 
yeah I went at diagonals to get them in and after that went anti clockwise doing half to a single twist before swapping screw.

Even with that scenario the bolt shouldn't have broken.

Many have left the protective paper on the backplate sticky stuff to avoid gluing it to the MB.
 
Yeah, prolly just a bad screw that had a fracture and snapped due to the "normal" stress. looks like you are going to have to drill that out.
