Thermal Pad Strip vs Just covering the components

I am going to be installing the block on my GPU and the instructions indicate that you cover the whole area with a strip, but there is a lot of space between the components that heat up, so is it better to just cover the components or is it better to do as the instructions say and use a strip to cover the whole area? I have seen some instructions on you tube where the components are cover individually.
