The Wii U Thread (that doesn't suck)

I would love to buy a WiiU, but I'm in the same boat with a huge backlog of games. What's worse is I discovered an awesome game store in my area called 8-bit Hall of Fame that has ignited my flame for nostalgia. I actually just picked up long-box versions of D and Doom for the Playstation from this place over the weekend. Was really excited to see Doom :D.

I think as soon as a new Metroid is released for it that is NOT made by Team Ninja (preferably Retro... one can dream) I will have to pick one up.

It helps you with your backlog, by giving you a break from the types of games in your backlog. :D Nice score on the PS1 games. I use an emulator now, but have a ton of long-box games too. I play Tobal No 1, the original Rayman, Bushido Blade, Tekken 2, and Symphony of the Night every once in a while. (granted, some of those came in small cases :D )

That's true. I can still pick up a Nintendo game and not put it down for hours. Nothing else can really hold my attention nowadays.

Funny you mention Symphony of the Night because I still go back and play that pretty regularly. I found it sitting like a beacon of light at a Gamestop one day back in 2006 and I didn't have to think twice about grabbing it :D. Some of my other longboxes include Battle Arena Toshinden 1 & 2, Mortal Kombat 3, and The Need for Speed (all purchased new 1995-1996). My holy grail would be to find Resident Evil longbox .

Did they ever do anything about loading times with Lego City Undercover? That got on my nerves quick, it was also somewhat laggy. I plan on getting back into it soon.

Im still enjoying Mario Kart however.

I have an imported not-long-box of BioHazard. Probably in Japanese though. I don't think I've played it, and not sure who left it at my house back in the 90s or so. :D

Been gaming more on the PC since the Steam Sale, but definitely intend to go back and finish Super Mario 3D World and Splinter Cell Blacklist on Wii U. Been using my Wii U for Netflix a lot actually. It's nice to sit in bed and watch some Netflix on the gamepad.

As a nitpick, I still hate that the WiiU can only play Netflix in 2.1 audio.
At the same time, the surround sound for Mario Kart is phenomenal.
I really do wish they had some means of compressed stream audio, though. While great for disks and full-game downloads, it sucks for anything else.

Netflix will probably never play in surround sound on the Wii U. Nintendo didn't pay the Dolby Digital or DTS license fees and I'm guessing it might even lack the proper hardware for those codecs. It was probably to keep the cost low, a similar reason why the Wii wouldn't play DVD's out of the box, Nintendo didn't pay the DVD decrypting license.

You know that the PS4,Xbox One and Wii U all only output PCM uncompressed audio through HDMI. Xbox One outputs dts or Dolby thru optical and it isn't as good as the uncompressed PCM stream all three of these consoles have best sound matched with a newer fully HDMI capable receiver that support LPCM audio..

Netflix also not every movie is 5.1 some are only stereo sound although it seems their app only does stereo they could update that its up to Netflix to do that.

My point is you're likely to see surround sound on the Wii U with only the games and why that is so. I don't have a PS4 or Xbox One but I bet there's a DTS-MA and Dolby Digital TrueHD logo on both of them since they're touted as Blu-Ray players too. It doesn't matter if the PS4 or Xbox One decodes the surround sound codec and outputs it as LPCM or outputs the bit perfect DTS-MA or DD TrueHD stream, you can bet Sony and MS paid the license. The Wii U can't be used as either a DVD player or Blu-Ray player. I bet their reasoning is that people already have a DVD and/or Blu-Ray player so why add to the cost of the system for consumers for features they're unlikely to use.

Anyway I'd like to see more surround sound games on the Wii U as it adds so much more immersion to games. I've heard most of the surround sound games for the Wii don't use the center channel though... I only have 2 surround sound games for it that I know of, Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World and I'm pretty sure nothing comes out the center channel on those.

Wall of frustrated text incoming..

So since about May 15th I've been trying to get Nintendo to fix my damn Wii U.

Problem started when my gamepad would "lag" or "stutter" every 15-20 seconds. The second long pause was EXTREMELY distracting and made any game that required the gamepad very frustrating. I tried resyncing , I tried disconnected the battery and doing a cold boot , I tried different rooms in my home in case interference was somehow a problem (it wasn't..). Then I downloaded a Wifi scanning app (Issidner) and saw that my Wii U gamepad was switching 5Ghz channels every 15-20 seconds. This was curious so I called Nintendo , they issued me a return label for repair , sent it in and then waited. It came back (2 and half weeks later) and the third party vendor who repaired it couldn't replicate the problem (he didn't bother , likely turned it on and used it without even touching a game). I was told to write a detailed description of the problem as well and included it with my return package so they could very easily replicate the problem under nearly any condition. They even required me to ship both my gamepad and Wii U console...

So I got it back and they listed that they had replaced the Wifi radio in the gamepad. Tried it again and SAME PROBLEM all over again. I was extremely mad at this point , called Nintendo , spoke to a nice rep who issued me another return but this time directly to Nintendo HQ in Washington state and promised me a refurbed gamepad. So I sent it back again and got it back today... synced it up and guess what problem is STILL here???

So now I'll have to call them AGAIN and explain the same problem AGAIN to a new person and the only possible thing it could be is that my Wii U console itself has a bad radio in it or a logic board issue. Its the last link in the chain. But I'm so fed up dealing with this problem and I just want to play some games with my friends but I'm sure when they issue me ANOTHER return label I'll have to send it in the console and they will likely have to wipe it so I'll have to redownload all my games which will take forever since the Wii U has no ethernet and the weakest Wifi radio I've ever used.

I love my Wii U , I really have been a solid advocate for it and Nintendo. But the fact is that it seems their third party vendors for repair are fucking useless. This problem should have been identified by them by simply booting up a game and actually attempting to replicate the details I had outlined which produces the error 100 percent of the time. Keep in mind my problem effects the gamepad ONLY. On the TV with a pro controller no stuttering.

I feel like tomorrow when I call I'm going to demand they ship me out a remaned console before I ship them back the one they should have repaired to begin with. And I'm sure that won't be an option and I'll get to play the fucking waiting game ALL OVER again for another couple of weeks.

The only other time I remember this much frustration over a console was the 5 times I experienced RROD with my 360's. But never in my personal history with Nintendo since 1985 have I experienced so many issues with any of their consoles. Its really disappointing. If it wasn't Nintendo (since they have so many great first party exclusives) I would just give up and move on to one of my other perfectly functioning consoles (PS4 , Xbone , 360 and PS3) and say fuck it. But now that Nintendo has got me so excited thanks to E3 I know that I'm just fucked waiting for them to stop being incompetent.

Glad I got that off my chest. Oh and since there are so many drama llama's in this sub forum who love to take anything that can be ammunition against Nintendo and "run with it" let me just state that even despite my current experience , I love this console and will continue to support Nintendo. So if you want to reply to this and its just to troll/vomit your dislike of Nintendo .. why don't you just write yourself a person memo instead that says "I don't like Nintendo anymore" and tuck it away whenever you want to say something instead of trying to force another Wii U based thread to shit the bed. Thanks :)

That sucks, man. Do you have the ability to try it at another house? From your descriptions, it really sounds environmental and I'd hate to see you send the console in only to have it come back and not work again.

I agree, this actually does sound environmental. It could easily be something that spans your entire house too, (not AS likely, but still possible) so you wouldn't notice a big change moving rooms. As Demon10000 suggested, maybe try it in another house. Or, if you know someone else with one, have them bring it over and try it at your house. I have a feeling even if you get your main board swapped out, you could experience the same thing.

One thing that COULD be possible though. I wonder if maybe one of the little antenna wires inside the main console (the one for the controller band (if separate)) has disconnected. You might see rapid channel changing if it's not getting a good signal internally. Just a thought. You'd still need to send it in though unless you didn't care about voiding the warranty.

That sucks though, and sorry to hear about it. Mine actually works on different floors of the house, as long as I'm not too close to the brick chimney actually. (which is pretty central to the house, so as long as I'm not in the main hall-ways it works great)

That sucks definitely needs to go back. I run 2 5 GHz and 3 2.4ghz networks in my house and I've never had that happen with my Wii U. Yes I have coverage issues but I have a decent size house and use many channels.

Ive had my Wii u since launch night and never had that happen to me, you definitely have a bad piece of hardware or something else is seriously screwing with it.

If you receive a new console and it still does that it could definetly be enviroment issue. Since the WiiU gamepad works through wifi maybe the air is cluttered with Wifi signals. I dont know what frequencies it works on and if this will matter in the end but just in case download inSSIDer 3 program if your computer is also connected through wireless and see how many signals there are around you and how strong they are and do they clutter up all the channels.

For the person that posted about the scanning rapid of channels. I have experienced this problem on other wireless devices like a cell phone and a first gen Wii when it first came out. Now these are examples of connecting to a wireless router only but made try making a change to your router such as frequency, channel, but the problem I have is a ssid that's hidden vs shown. I have had devices that picked up my hidden ssid after manual input lock on and cycle on and off the network. If the ssid is shown with same settings device stays locked in. My current lg cell is like this and have no clue why. Also I have encountered wireless issues with dual band routers if you don't separate the Channels and name with devices wifi going on and off. I know the pad connects to the WiiU so this may not be of any help but these are some odd wireless issues I have encountered in my past With top of the line routers.

So I called Nintendo and got a supervisor after some haggling and he promised to switch my console out for a remaned one at their HQ in Washington state. However he got a little snappy with me because I mentioned that I could replicate the issue anywhere in my home and that perhaps Nintendo's third party vendor didn't bother to do anything other than the check list of requirements which may or may not have included actually replicating my conditions as I detailed. He told me to repack it up , include ANOTHER detailed outlining of what's wrong (for the 3rd fucking time) with it and that they'll likely just switch it out with a remaned and he gave me overnight UPS shipping to and from so I should have a quick turn around.

Perhaps it is something locally causing interference but I've tested everything I can think of. Perhaps the electrical modulation from my Air Conditioner being on the same outlet/circuit could be distorting the sine wave causing some kind of issue with the console at large. I'm going to bring it over a friends house tomorrow and he has a UPS with an active line conditioner which would eliminate such an issue. If it still has the issue even after its received clean power (as clean as either one of us can afford) then I'm sending it back. If I get back and its still an issue than it MUST be something locally (again , doubtful). On the plus side Nintendo or Netflix or Verizon got its shit together because I can stream SuperHD 1080p through my Wii U even with its weak Wifi radio. Something even my Xbox One has a struggle doing.

I'll report back how it goes though. Hopefully I can get this fixed soon...

I noticed that, too... I've seen quite a bit lately in SuperHD and I'm very impressed that it's doing it all over wireless!

I kind of hope your test fails and the console doesn't work at your friends house. It'll be a lot easier to get a fix!

I've got an air conditioner on the same circuit as my Wii U too actually, without this problem, so that's doubtful, but possible. My AC unit is a noisy window-type from a couple of years back, so not the quietest thing electrically I can think of. Definitely let us know how it goes!

Looks like you are getting taken care of, but you could have saved a ton of time if you just bought another unit at WalMart or something and see if it gives you the same issue in your house. If it does, then you know its your environment and just return the new console.

Do you have a portable air conditioner? Those tend to mess with signals for whatever reason. (I have a Sharp)

Any word on a price drop? Its still a little too pricey for me to want to bite, but if they had something around 200, maybe 250 that got bundled with MK8 I might have to really consider.

It's already cheap as hell. But, if you want cheap, buy a refurb unit from Nintendo directly, and a copy of MK8. That'll nap you the console and two games for ~$250.

I'm waiting for Xmas...I bet there will be some nice deals, and also new games.

Target is running 15% off electronics tomorrow. If you want to pick one up.

Eh, 300 is pretty steep for my Imo, just because of the limited library of games that I want to play.

That refurbished price is good. How's the quality? Is the controller like-new?

The Nintendo web store has refurbs for 200 and MK8 is 50 bucks at Amazon, if you buy MK8 before the end of the month you can get a free game as well.

Where does it say that you get a free game? Is it only certain games? One of equal or lesser value?

Personal peeve: People repeating EXACTLY what I said, on the SAME page of a thread.

Ebs, it's a known promotion right now. Yes, there's a handful of games you can choose from as your freebee. Do a little research.

He even quoted you and still said "300" is too steep. That's a head scratcher for sure.

In any case, I think I'm going to finally buy MK8 today and go for Pikmin 3 as my free game.

When I said 300 is too steep, that's the cost of a new unit which I think is a little hefty. I might go the refurbished way. Seems like a solid deal.

And sorry Yeah I didn't look at Nintendo's site. The one user mentioned mk8 price on amazon and was looking to see if the promotion was listed there.

I've yet to see anyone unhappy with their refurb purchase and most people claim the consoles look like they're new. I wouldn't hesitate to go that route.

Word. Thanks. It looks like they aren't eligible for Nintendo Club Coins, but I don't think that will really bother me much.

My apologies, I replied when I saw the post. Should I delete the post? I wouldn't want to do anything to upset you...

God forbid the poster gets multiple posts saying the same thing to help Nintendo sell Wii Us.

If anyone is on the fence with pushmo.... Buy it!

Made by the same dev as advance wars.

Its aweeeeesome

I saw Mario Golf World Tour is out for 3DS.

$29.99 on Amazon.com, so I was wondering if a Wii U version would come out.

I bought it its really fun I buy most cross platform indie games on Wii u just because I can play on the tablet when main TV is in use.

Finally grabbed Shovel Knight. It's extremely fun!

Maybe I should start a Shovel Knight thread somewhere else, because I really can't praise it enough. I actually just can't stop playing it. I've got all of the armor, shovel upgrades, most relics except the ones from places I haven't been yet. I've even gone back to previous levels purely for the fun of playing some of them again. Anyway, grab it if you don't have it.
