no external drive support? seems like kind of a big one there, the rest dont seem to be that bad. DLNA support would be nice but most of us have HTPCs or rokus or something that can stream content. 4k support will have to be added in 2 or 3 years probably, but not necessary right now.
 
Who cares about 4k support? There's still tons of people who don't even have 1080p TVs yet.

Not to mention that anyone who thinks that games are going to run at 4k resolution on the next generation of consoles is using drugs that I really, really want to get my hands on.
 
Maybe for movies? Youtube already support it so.. You have to put yourself that console will last until 2024 (as sony predict it about 10 years lifespan)
 
Without any DLNA it better have an app store so I can add plex otherwise this console is useless.

I'm guessing this thing doesn't last until 2024, some crazy stuff will be out by then. Who would want to use this old piece of shit in the 2020's?
 
Sony had the opportunity to do the same thing they did with Bluray. One of the reasons Sony got great market penetration because, let's face it -- PS3 was the cheapest Bluray player.

I am guessing Sony excluded DLNA so you would be forced to use some sort of Sony service or Sony partner to 'buy' and rent movies via the store.

Well, microcrap lost me on E3 and sony now with so many restrictions.

Winblows will keep me happy, until SteamOS is up and running.

It has a 10 year life span(aka longer than ps3). Imagine your ps3 only supporting 480p game\video playback since 1080p was just coming out in 2006...

True that, Though I am tempted to get a Xbone and turn it into an arcade machine solely for Killer Instinct.....its a Nostalgia thing :p

I believe that they are including the original with purchase of the new one. But I have the original arcade versions on my PC already, maybe I can merry them to the Xbone somehow.

It very much is on the MP3 front at least. You have to use their online music service which i forget the exact prices but its something like 60$ per year or $40 per year if ps+ subscriber. And remember when microsoft caught so much shit for paywalls?
 
It seems strange that it can not play audio cds or MP3s. I can not remember the last time I used a CD to listen to music, but I have a hard time believing that it can not play MP3s. This is not a big deal since I am not planning on purchasing either one. I have always mainly used my PS3 as a BluRay player because when I bought it, it was close to the same price as a stand alone player.
Seems silly to exclude such an easy to include feature that has been standard on most devices for many years now.

Technically, I suppose. Effectively, a console is dying from the day its successor debuts. Sure, people can keep making games. People were still making games for the NES when the N64 showed up but that didn't mean the console wasn't in the grave.
 
Interesting. They're clearly not trying to be as much of a multimedia hub with some of those restrictions. I've never used my consoles as such, but a lot of people do.
 
I don't think a significant portion of people buying the PS4 also have media center PCs.

Having to pay a monthly fee to use the hardware that I have already purchased to "access" apps that I already pay a fee to use (ie Netflix, Amazon) is what is completely turning me off. I mainly game on my PC. As I said in my previous post, I mostly use my PS3 to watch BluRay movies. I occasionally play the exclusive title or a specific series but it is very rare. I used to use the PS3 for Netflix and Amazon. We started to use a Roku in the bedroom and really liked the amount of "channels" and how simple it is. We purchased one for the den as well. With that $100 box, I can access all the content that I have already paid for without paying the box manufacturer a monthly fee.
If my PS3 breaks i will probably just get another one since the prices have dropped so much.

WOW, way to go backwards. So PS3 is a superior piece of multimedia equipment in comparison to the PS4 then? 'Cause I swear I can do all of this shit on my current PS3 so I can, you know, play music for when I have people over. What's this bullshit about not supporting an external drive? What if someone nukes their harddrive and they need to install a new one like I just did and it requires a USB key with version 4.50 to format the fucking drive? Oh, send it back to Sony and have them charge you up the anus for repairs.
 
Kind of disappointed personally. Seriously, you can't copy the gameplay videos to a USB drive or your own PC, you can only send it to a online service? That just crap IMO. No CDs means no ripping, so no custom soundtracks except for the ones you build if you subscribe to their music service. A 5400 RPM SATA II HD? Is it SATA II interface or a SATA II drive running on a SATA III interface? I was thinking since it had USB 3.0 ports (IIRC) that the drive would be SATA III 7200 RPM. They really should have made the HD external or at least external compatible, I would love to put a 3 or 4 TB 3.5" external USB3 drive instead of the internal SATAII drive.
 
So glad I just built my steambox. LOLBye consoles. When you get an exclusive I absolutely must have maybe I will buy you. By then you will be cheaper.

By the same metric, the NES had a 20 year run. To say the PS2 was "active" or "healthy" the entire 12 years, I think, is a bit of a stretch.
 
One thing I am a bit confused by. No External Drive Support...Day one Update can be installed via usb stick.

Isnt a USB stick technically an external drive? How is it any different than an external SSD? To the client they both look they exact same
 
No DLNA and no External HD support? WTF?!

I guess I will hold onto my PS3's and just keep enjoying them!

On January 4, 2013, Sony announced that the PlayStation 2 had been discontinued after 12 years of production – one of the longest runs for a video game console.
 
Seriously, this is the first really bad news(imo) that I've heard about the ps3. So then, no in game mp3s of my own?... I cannot even count how many hours of movies and tv shows that I own that have been streamed to the ps3. Hell it worked even better out of the box for me than streaming to Xbox360 did.
I have no idea what they are on about, it's the small things that bring word of mouth customers.
More opportunity for the Xbox One I guess.
