The RamDisk

i'm not going to get this RAMDISK because once its released after a while there will be competition. The idea and it's technology will mature and prices will tumble down. Yeah sure it's cheap already but the next version from Gigabyte or some other company will maybe have 8+ slots? New ones will also have better power features.

FYI....there's a poll in the disk storage systems section about whether or not you will be buying this device....share your thoughts!

for 50-60 bucks....who cares?!?!?!!!.......more than likely be able to reuse the most expensive part (RAM). I mean, whens the last time you've upgraded a part of your comp and only lost 50 bucks on the upgrade....i know i havent.

Yeah the limiting factor here is the ram, not the cost of the device itself. I'll give you that point about more than 4 slots though. But considering no one else has announced anything yet, I'm not going to count on "competition" driving down the price or adding to the features. The price is only $60, and there exists ram drives like this already with better features, the catch is that they are all Vastly more expensive. So IMO no one is going to come out with anything any time soon that beats the iRam price/performance-wise.

Uhh, since when?
CENATEK has been making them for years. They are yours for the taking at $4,000 for a fully loaded 4 gig drive. It runs only through the PCI bus so your limited to 133MBs. I do own their software which rocks. But thjey have made them and used PC100 and PC133 for a long time.
Hell I remember when way back you could buy one that used EDO66 ram that would set you back about ten grand for a gig. The point with Gigabytes iRam drive is that more people can afford this drive at less than $100 a gig including the drive which is $50.I believe Cenatek used to charge $3000 for the bare drive no memory included.

O believe me, I'm tickled pink that this guy is coming out. My only beef is the fact that it still only has 4 slots. I can understand that it can only fit 4 slots on it due to the fact that it resides on a PCI slot. So why not make a device that takes up a full size drive bay and can hold 16 slots? Run it on the IDE or SATA bus and give it some system power (along with an internal battery or two). Make it affordable too...

Everyone forgets that hard drives are always the slowest bottleneck in a computer.
If anyone has a link to Gigabyte saying 2 gig modules work please post!

Well I sure haven't fogotten!! That's the main reason why I'm so frustrated with the delay on getting devices like this out there. I know that, on average, RAM data access speeds is x1000 faster than a physical disk -literally!! I also know that the disk drive is one of the last "mechanical" elements remaining on a modern PC. I would LOVE to see at least the OS reside on a SSD for the time being --until pricing goes down even more.

For me, the ramdisk is going to be part of a 3 point layout...
I have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard. This supports 4 SATA/SATAII drives with Raid 0,1,0+1 and an additional 4 SATA drives with Raid 0,1,5,0+1. This motherboard also has 3 PCI slots.

My allotment of drives will be:
1 74gb Raptor to hold the OS and program executables
4 74gb Raptors in RAID-5 to hold videos, music, game maps, etc.
3 Ramdrives in RAID-0 to be used as swap space, temp space, and photoshop scratch disk.

I'm going to get one of these, 4x1GB sticks, and allocate the entire drive as swap space :D
These drives are going to be fun! ;)
