I've got a simple question and it may be entirely off topic for this thread. If it is way off topic I appologize immensely. I didn't know where else to post it. I use the F@H GPU2 clients on my 2x Q6600 G0's on core #3 and I use the World Community Grid clients "FightAIDS@Home", "Influenza Antiviral Drug Research", "Help Fight Childhood Cancer" projects and some others, but these are my current projects for WCG. These projects I use on cores #0, #1, and #2. (locked through infinity changer, I set my CPU core usage to 75%) :)

What I was curious to know (not that it makes a big difference) what's the list posted here saying "NON DC-VAULT" mean. I check my F@H stats on the F@H Kakao; [H]orde site, EOC site and the WCG stats on the WCG stats here at the mighty [H]orde :confused:

The DC-Vault is a site which collects stats for a number of DC projects (such as F@H, WCG, Seti@Home, Enigma@Home, the current count is 42 if I counted right). They then pull the stats for each of those projects and rank teams where they stand overall. Right now, the [H]orde is ranked 12th overall out of all the teams participating in the Vault. A project that is listed as non-DC Vault is a project that is not currently listed in the vault.

The projects tracked in the Vault are constantly changing, so we do our best to keep this thread up to date with everything we can find, so no matter what project may get added to the vault down the road, we're ready. For example, Engima@Home was added recently, and when it was, we were already strong contenders in the project, so it helped our standing.

Does the DC-Vault really matter in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. But there are people who want to do projects besides F@H and WCG (myself included) and they should be welcome here too.

I was under the impression the "grand scheme" was to help science and in my case, mostly medical science, through distributed computing. Who or what really gives a flying rat poop how youse' accomplish this (that's why I hate some bigot telling me what handle to DC under if I want to be part of the team :mad:) I think anyone that can and wants to, should be able to participate in any freakin' project they choose (this ain't Red China) and be noted. (whether it be DC-Vault, non DC-Vault or one of R2D2's jobbers ;)) Especially on a forum with such dedicated DCers as the mighty [H]orde

That's exactly the point. It's the projects and the science that they're working on that really matter, not which one get's listed in the Vault or how long it'll take us to finally run down Crunchers Inc. and Anandtech.

The one good thing the vault does though, is that it raises awareness of a lot of smaller projects. Whether or not a project gets added, we'll discuss/debate it's merits/shortcomings.
 
Don't forget that a few of the nice things about the Vault project are that they 1) screen DCing projects for project openness and reliability, and 2) bring attention to worthwhile science apps that would otherwise go unnoticed by a LOT more people! <edit: sorry, 4 minutes too slow on the post> Having your project added to the Vault listing pretty much guarantees your project server will be tested [H]ard as hundreds of new users sign up and start pounding the project right before and after it's added. Granted, some of the projects (a whole category, in fact) are math projects, and some feel they don't offer as much to society as the pure science one, but hey, everyone is pretty much guaranteed to find one or two (or several in many of our cases) that interests them!

Of course, I think our first motivation was that we were all extremely offended to see literally dozens of other teams listed as "better" than the [H]orde, so we just decided to do something about it! :D At least for all of us stat whores on the Commandoes... :rolleyes: Even better, though, when it's all for science!

I'm not sure if anyone cares, seeing as 3x+1 was long gone when we started venturing into these projects, but for anyone who was into 3x+1, you have a new home. And this problem is big enough apparently that it can justify having 3 different names. (3x+1, collatz, HOTPO) :D

The Collatz Conjecture version has made a ATI GPU work unit to run through Boinc.

They all do to some extent. We aren't very active in too many projects that aren't listed in the DC-Vault, but we try to get something on the board in every project that we come across. When a project moves into the vault, it's easier to jump on when the team and user accounts are already established.
 
Added RSA Lattice Siever(2.0) and moved RND@Home to the Closed/Abandoned section.
 
Added Anansi to the list, also added another link to the list in post #2. I"m examining the list now, there's at least one project in there I haven't seen yet. Also moved SHA-1 Collision to the Closed/Abandoned section.


Edit: I was able to find a couple of additional projects, but those were for the closed/abandoned section. I also was able to add additional information to some closed/abandoned projects already on the list.
