so my file server is getting bigger but i have made some changes...

I have Skystar 2 on 3 pcs for sat receiving and lots of media to capture to fill the disks!!!!!

This is a really mess setup for now...but i will give this another look when i have some time...

My new 1.89TB RAID5 solution. Entire setup costed me less than $600:

diskarray1ow7.jpg

diskarray2tv5.jpg

5x Seagate IDE 500GB drives plus one 500GB cold spare. Set to email me if there is a critical failure or overheat. All housed in my apartment closet. PC is:

1.25Ghz Athlon XP 2800+ underclocked and undervolted
512MB RAM
Broadcom PCI-X gigabit NIC
Adaptec 29360 SCSI card
XP Home :D :D

Running torrents, main file repository. Girlfriend loves how quiet I was able to get it by moving the system to the closet, and I love the always-on peace of mind. :) Yay for cheap disk arrays

Little update

Added 6 more disks, total capacity 12,2TB formatted. Currently 20 disks connected to an Areca 1280ML with 2GB cache. Array is configured as raid 6. Upgraded LAN to 2Gbit.
Also added fan controllers to slow down those noisy 5000 RPM fans (not shown on pictures)

so i am back and now to tell that i bought a new Gigabyte P35c-DS3R board for my main server...with 8 sata slots...and need to say that i guess this was a good choice for now: just 110 Euros!

Now i plan to install all again on these board and get my disks on it...for now..

But when i look for those TB you got i need to say mine are really a shame...just a few terabytes....heheheehh

I plan to upgrade this for a 5 TB range but when i have the $$$$........i am waiting for 1 TB to get cheap...i mean...less than 250 euros....for now....its near 300 euros...

D3vY: So....what do you have on your disks ?! What do u mean for 2 gbit lan ?!!

Looks great! whats the model number of that array?

Don't get excited: Average transfer rates are 15-20MB/s! This was verified by Promise tech support. It's old, but stable and expandable. For my needs it's excellent but I wish I had a NAS :D

RAID Level: None

Singles Drives (if any)

C: 80GB IDE ( OS)
J: 320GB Sata
R:300GB Sata
S:300GB Sata
E:160GB Sata
G:160GB Sata
T: 500GB Sata

Before Formatting: 1820 GB
After Formatting: 1685 GB

Cheers

My Windows Home Server just got a little upgrade the other day...

I've been a long time user of hardware raid, from desktop products (promise and highpoints) to enterprise products (3ware), but after my last array rebuild, I was tired as all hell of dealing with the technical side of things... I just wanted a bunch of storage, and I just wanted it to work... That's when I heard about WHS' storage pooling, which instantly gave me a semi, because I could just slap some more drives in the pool, and select what I wanted to be "mirrored", though PC backups were also a huge part of the reason I wanted it too. I first started out with WHS back when it was in beta, and at the time I'd just reused an old desktop:

Opteron 170, Asus A8R32-MVP, 2 gigs of ram, etc etc.

I had 1 free sata port on the mobo left, and no space left on my storage pool, so I started looking for cheep options for lotsa sata ports, which is when I stumbled across this PCI-E 1x Addonics ADSA3GPX1 controller, and more importantly, these Addonics AD5SAPM port multipliers, all said and done I think it was ~$190 for 10 ports, which isn't bad if you ask me. Problem solved, and who cares about raid.

Caught a cheep sale on 5 more WD 750's, and pulled a Seagate 750 from my main system, and we're all done. End result:

1x 250gig WD for OS
8x 750gig WD for storage pool
1x 750gig Seagate for storage pool

6.37TB of formatted space, and I still have 5 more ports available, which should put me at or over 10TB when I fill em up depending on the drives I use.

LOL, I really wish it was mine, or even ours at work but it's an HP demo unit. They were demoing SQL 2008 on a Quad-socket Quad-Core Xeon box with 128GB of RAM. All 16 cores and RAM was 100%.

Holy $H!T !!! 16 CORES !!! 128GB RAM !!! If its a demo, does it cost to demo it? If not ill get a demo unit.

It was at trade show. If they sent it to us at work it would never find it's way back and my electric bill at home would go way up.

Wow! Amazing work!
I love the paint job too.
Where'd you get the Multi-lane Kit from? Price?
