The dreaded electrical burning smell

Sigh, hey guys. :(

a64 4000+
DFI LanParty SLI-DR
1 gig corsair pc-3200
previously has a tru power 550 watt before this--->600 watt Enermax PSU
74gig raptor HD

Yesterday i was doing my usual OCing to find the best speed so i thought and try a higher setting voltage for my CPU so i tried 113%(1.67v) then followed by saving the CMOS and rebooting..well when my computer went to reboot it blanked out and heard a snap like sound. Ten seconds later i smelled the horibble smell of burning wires or something then i really started to worry. So i opened my case to find no visible burn damage. Fired the PC back up and got a short response then it shut-down again with more smelly crap lol. i checked all my hardware (cpu, hard drives, ram, video card..etc) and still came up with nothing. I also tried taking different parts out to see which might have made good toast. I looked at my motherboard which is probably the culpret cause its just not booting. Anyways maybe you guys can help..and i know you can't see it for yourself so maybe ur best guesses would be in order.

Update: Took out CPU of motherboard and when i fire it up it runs, Now i see 4 little red lights at the left hand bottom side of the board(facing up in the ATX case). They we're on when there was smoke coming from the computer. Could those lights be saying CPU/Dead/No CPU?

Recently my computer has been crashing alot running in windows and kept saying memory dump of some sort. Also my CPU over heated twice reaching 85-100C cause i forgot to plug in the water cooler which was when i first got the 4000+ a64.

Edit: Sorry this topic is leading to the CPU thread, didn't know forsure which part went.
 
Those 4 lights on mean your CPU was not dected (they go out during the boot process when certain points are reached in the process)

There's a good chance you fried your CPU if you got it up to 100C.
 
Probably your CPU, good chance. But also, have you looked at the trannies around the CPU to see if any of them got fried too? On an old Slot A board from Abit that I saw at where I worked, a trannie was fried and wow did it smell. Look at the components to see if anything popped or burst.

Smelling the electrical/burning smell, and that's bad in and of itself..but your screwed now that the magic smoke escaped... :eek:

You may have popped something in the PS...you may also want to pull the mobo out and give it a thorough front and back examination.
 
try your cpu in another mainboard. you dont want to put a fresh cpu in your mainboard, at least until you find out if you pfukt your cpu.

Another twist to this amazing burning rollercoaster. It seems my computer has been knocking the power out, up stairs of the house(all rooms). So without the CPU i plugged in the computer and ran it for quite awhile down on the main floor of the house, no burning, and no smells. I took out the board looked very carefully throughout back and front and everything seems fine, no signs of burnage. I'll recheck everything but it seems I have to phone my power company and buy a new CPU while iam at it...anyways iam looking forward to buying a X2 4400+ :D
 
I had that same problem too where when I turned on my CPU and the power blew. I thought something kept shorting out in the computer itself. Turns out the outlet in the next room was fried and black under the plate :p Dunno hwo that happened. The outlet must have been shorting out and is something similar is happening to your comp. Give it a good look through.
 
Well this is a new house and it seems the electrical bums screwed up, everything in the upstairs is running off 1 switch on the breaker. I have another computer upstairs aswell which iam using right now ;) . But still for the breaker to cut off and make my computer smell toasty theres obviously 2 problems now. Phoning the power guys tomorrow asap.
 
I think the CPU is dead. I did that once to a Barton and it just kept smoking. The whole underside of the CPU was black.
 
Wow...I would try out the CPU in another MOBO as was suggested. Also, testing everything outside the case might help also as well as re-setting the BIOS.
 
Weird thing is that there's no such black markings or any signs of burns. Looks like a new CPU. Something although might have shorted out inside.

hmm...well iam gonna try motherboard swapping to my old asus av8 deluxe and see how it goes..i'll keep yall posted.

Its most likely your CPU. If your getting temps that high, theres something seriously wrong. A max for that CPU should be around 60-70 under full load. Have you checked your PSU at all? Any burn marks?
 
I replaced my old PSU which was the Antec trupower 550 watt to a new just got it 4 days ago Enermax 600 watt. Seems i wasted money for the new one since the trupower worked fine, my asumption was the trupower but in the world of computers its hard to find which part siezed. Probably in the next couple hours i'll be trying out my old motherboard and see what happens. Pretty much a given though..my CPU just plain stopped working its 0's and 1's. :(

Ah yes i forgot to meantion that ive OCed this CPU alot(on my old motherboard; asus av8 deluxe), I went from voltages 1.5 to 1.9 cause i was OC hungry and well of course that didn't make my system stable and was hurting it than helping. Like in my previous post it did hit the 100s for a temp.
