So to make a long story short, Had power surge in the house, fried my UPS and Computer... What does everything the best Video Card is right now. Will be on a 24" LCD Maybe 30" if i can squeeze it.

4870x2 or GTX295 depending on what you're doing with it.

Gaming, mostly FPS and i have been a nvidia fan, last Ati was a 9800 Pro, so not sure which one to get. On gaming with vista 64bit, which will be better on a 22-24" LCD

So your UPS was fried and it took your computer with it? Check to see what kind of warranty your UPS manufacturer has, you might be entitled to some cash/replacement action.

I am, the plugs that were plugged into the UPS were melted. Not sure if it was a lightning strike or what, it did storm like mad the night it happened. But my renter's insurance is going to cover whatever is damage. I have full replacement cost so it all good

Personal experience with HD4870X2, is there's nothing I have tried to play that I couldn't comfortably play with most of the eye candy jacked up.

I have a GTX280 in another computer, and it's a very fast card, but as of the latest drivers, I get the occasional white flash during gaming. It's annoying, but I'm able to deal with it.

Also, where do you live? I had a pretty vicious storm roll through here last night.

I live in Michigan, we got 2+ inches of rain and all sorts of nasty stuff

So basically, either card will do what i want. Its just a matter of ATi or Nvidia

Oh, if the insurance company is paying for it, and you had a pair of 8800 Ultras... get a pair of GTX 285 2GB! Not sure that eVGA FTW overclocks are reliable (I've heard of a lot of RMA action on them), so I'd probably go with the eVGA Superclocked.

Other than for folding, GPUs don't scale well at all beyond two, and two GTX 285 in SLI will be faster than a GTX 295.

I had a single 8800 Ultra, when i got it, it was 600 bucks....

if you are going to get $600 worth of video cards, get 2x 4890's and OC them. It'll be faster then a gtx295 and a 4870x2.

(gtx285 sli will be too expensive)

A pair of XFX XXX 4890 cards can be had for $250 each (that's the 900Mhz version, overclocked from the 900Mhz norm).

On the nVidia side, if you want to spend the entire $600, there's the GTX 275 1792MB for $297 each, or the GTX 275 Superclocked 896MB for $255 each.

this although you can get the cards around 200 if you look

right now two 4890 in crossfire, with a pair of GTX275 close behind

thats for all the input guys, and about not having this happen again? I had a UPS but it was fried too. I think it was a lightning strike right next to the house, or a direct hit. I am thinking of going with a ATi solution. With gaming on a 22" will i need Crossfire or get a single higher end card?

What do you think between the Radeon HD 4870 X2 vs 2 4890's

I've got 2x nVidia GTX 295 in SLI using a 24" Dell 2408WFP monitor. Works quite nicely. :) Overkill for now, yes, but still, very nice.

You started the thread asking for solutions for a 24" or 30" display and it's now down to 22"? :p CF/SLI is definite overkill for a 22" display if you ask me, but if you plan to upgrade it eventually and the insurance is paying for it... I guess you might as well splurge. A GTX 260 or a 4870 is more than enough for a 22" tho.

I was trying to go with a 24 but, my 22" is fine so insurance company is not going to replace it :(

the extra 250 is not going to buy you crap at 22" I would relocate the money to other parts. and I don't recommend the the GTX285 right now for any reason, the GTX275/4890 kills it, you can get two cards (that are within 10% of it to start with) for the price of one. GTX285 price bracket = fail. I know its the insurance footing the bill but I would rather get a better base system or upgrade the monitor.

Yeah thanks for the info, i have not really looked at video cards since i got my 8800 Ultra when it came out. So my best idea is go for a 4890? or a 275?

do you like red or green? right bang for the buck its the 4890, but that doesn't mean as much to you here. personally with the smaller monitor I would go with the 4890 for the CFAA. really either will do just fine.

Both cards are good choices and are roughly on the same level. Personally, I would go fo the 4890 but only because I'm an ATI fan. Better for you to allocate the insurance money on the best CPU possible.

You can always invest in a better monitor later and go Crossfire afterwards. Right now, a single card solution is your best choice here.
