The Analogue 3D Thread

This thread is dedicated to everything Analogue 3D related.

What is it? Basically an N64 Pro. Its a standalone console that has the ability to play original N64 games with upscaling to 4k while retaining the CRT charm.

https://www.analogue.co/3d

Why it matters: Beyond nostalgia for us old timers, the N64/PS1 and following generation are often seen as the pinnacle of gaming when it comes to core gameplay, storytelling, and overall pick up and play charm.

Either you were in the PS1 camp or the N64 camp (with a few Saturn nerds as well.) This seem like a great opportunity for the old Playatation gang to play these games on a better controller and better frame rates. For old N64 guys like me, there are still plenty of games that I missed, despite the smaller library compared to PS1.

So, anyone have experience or plans to buy the N64 Pro?

I'm finding myself more and more interested in these FPGA consoles as my interest in modern games wanes. The Analogue3D seems a little pricey and unavailable for me (though I do love the look of it).

I'm really interested in Modretro's M64 - I liked how they went for the 'trident' controller design for it (though 8bitdo's N64 controller looks very usable). But I also like how they released (or re-released) games for their Chromatic handheld (Gameboy FPGA). I'm hoping we'll see the same thing for the M64.

However, my N64 cartridge collection is now zero. I sold my N64 (which I purchased near launch using money earned from my newspaper route) for a Playstation 1 due to the lack of games (Zelda 64 was still at least a year away). Final Fantasy 7 would release that Fall for the PS1, and I never looked back at the N64 - so missed a lot of the system's classics from that era.

I do have a lot of my old PS1 discs, and would be up for a console based on that. Taki Udon's 'SuperStation' looks cool (will also have a optical drive add-on to play PS1 discs) and would likely be my FPGA console of choice. Especially with the Mister Pi's 'Cores' being available for it.

But - yeah, I'm a total newb on the tech behind these FPGA consoles but they're exciting to me.

Gonna start keeping my eye out for N64 games as they would be much harder to recreate regardless if I buy the system or not. I imagine that the price if 5hose things will only go up and could be the next nerd currency.

Havent heard of the M64. Sounds like there is a big demand for retro gaming with companies doing a better job of recreating the experience than buggy emulators and little input from the user - which is the target for fathers like me.

With ParaLLEI N64 emulation is pretty accurate these days even on weaker hardware. The only advantage FPGA really has over PC is low latency, which I find isn't as big a deal on gen 4 games and beyond as earlier games.

There's something really nice about having a stand alone console that my 8 year old can just flick a switch and start playing. Also, as Im limited on internet connectivity, i dont want to worry about constant updates. I also like that the console can be easily moved to different rooms.

this seem all around quite fun for people that has issue with their CRT or N64 (or if the 4k scaling work well just as an upgrade)

I bought and played both? I still have them and their games :p. Still, these consoles are pretty slick for young'ins... Get off my lawn!
For me, I had an N64 first, then a Playstation after.

Loved Perfect Dark, Armoured Core, Star Fox, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Diddy Kong Racing, Crash team racing, Mario Party...

It was a good time to be young.

If these are 100% hardware accurate then presumably the framerate would be too, which would be horrendous for various titles. It's what made me motion sick at the time (long before I discovered what was affecting my experience).

It's 100% hardware accurate, but ALSO has optional overclocking per-game that can increase performance by 20-50%

This can be an issue with some games, as timing and speed are off. But the platform can run games more accurately than any emulator and faster than OG hardware.

Yeah according to DF retro, the only game where it was a problem was on a rail shooter when it speeds up the game clock It also messes up some cuts scenes if I recall that.

Beyond that, it is a MASSIVE improvement as many N64 games ram in the sub-20 fps or even single digits at times!

hey that reminded me of the glitch i saw, batman beyond went super speed with the oc enabled.

PC Mag tested 38 games and found with GoldenEye there was no audio in levels and only in the menu with OC enabled, sadly. While a few others didn't detect the rumble pak with it enabled. Seems a kind of YMMV thing apparently.

I for one want someone to test Body Harvest and confirm the FPGA actually handles it correctly, since that's one of the handful of games that absolutely requires the ParaLLEl core on emulators.

Still out of stock from what I see.

Getting all of this hype then missing the Christmas shopping frenzy will be a huge L for Analogue.

That seems to be the MO for most of their launches.

I see "Funtastic" colour options were announced.

Yep just saw that too. Orders open on the 10th with deliveries promised before Christmas. $300 vs $270 for the standard colors. Honestly not a fan of the clear models - they make it look kind of chincey and then you will want to get the clear controllers.

I might snatch up a solid gold model if available though.

Finally got my day 1 preordered unit yesterday late last night...

I had to change my address which I did before their deadline occurred, so that somehow delayed shipping a couple of weeks. It most certainly changed my order number to be much later in the "queue."

It works!

What TV mode looks best on LCD screens? How well does the overclocking work on your games?

No gold Zelda cartridge? :( Coolness you got your console though!

Hmm, haven't played with that feature much, yet. Literally only have had time to load up my non-gold Zelda cartridge and Super Mario 64, and also lament that I can't yet use my Everdrive until I can hook up my original N64 to a TV (my ex has my good Samsung with all the RCA/Component dongles)...

I wish, but this one was a Christmas gift from my Uncle in '98.

Gold sold out first - the one I wanted.

I managed to get Smoke. Not my thing but kids said they liked it most.

Green, Blue, and Purple are also Sold out as of now.

Only Watermelon and clear left....

edit: No Funtastic left.

Honestly would have taken a white or black with gold gone and saved $30 but those dont ship until next month.

All funtastic controllers ship February.

Good to know 8bitdo is making N64 controllers now. I can dump all the repros I've tried that have all been varying forms of terrible.

Heard they were nice. Gonna order a black and white one. Hate that the buttons are not colored but the clear colored ones look especially dumb.

They only had white ones in stock, but mine will be arriving Sunday. I got a Pro 3 too since the sticks in my SN30+ started to feel bad.

How do you tell. Heard it was one of the better wrestling games. Fine either way, just playing vs with daughters.
I don't remember honestly; I know there's a romhack specifically to fix the problem, and I believe later releases fixed the issue entirely, but I'm fuzzy on the details.

And yeah, No Mercy is still goated.

Just recievedd my console today, but getting controllers before Christmas is the biggest challenge. 8bitdo ones are not areiving until January now. Classic N64 controllers are tough to come by and usually over priced trash aroumd here.

The Technogaming one looks perfect for $20 but its sold out and looks like resellers are now selling them for $35 online at ebay.

Anyone know if the generic wired controllers work for the system? Usually dont go that route but need a few more before Christmas.

Are the triggers on the GameCube controller they offer analog? Most repros I've seen are digital for some reason.

Procrastenated too long so forced to get these instead. Possibly last day to get them before Christmas with Prime. Not the best, better beetter than most feom what reviews I've seen.
