who cares about the space it takes up...this is not 1990, most people have at least 500GB hard drives...I wanna know where the hell that 2nd promised patch is
This game just won't die on these forums

You are correct, this is 2012 and SSD's rule now. This is not 2008. Get with the times.
SSD's do not rule now...most people use them as boot drives...mechanical drives still rule today
Most people dont have 400 dollar graphic cards either so whats your point???? Something dosent have to be popular to rule. Derp.
I'll make it simple: most people do not use SSD's as gaming drives today...hence mechanical drives still dominate...hence 20GB is nothing on a non-SSD...got it?
It's typical id. Fun to play; shallow storyline. It that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then pass on it.I am curious to try Rage, the atmosphere sounds interesting but as I understand it the story is fairly shallow? Once its 5 or 10 bucks I will probably bite.

Speaking of Rage, patch 1.2 just hit the Steam servers.
Texture Detail: Enabling Texture Detail will improve up-close texture quality by performing upsampling with adaptive sharpening. This does not update or increase the resolution of the base textures included with the game but improves the perceived resolution and crispness of textures. This is an intensive operation and is only recommended if you have a quad-core CPU or higher. Please disable this feature if you encounter poor performance, stability issues or are given a notification that the game has run out of memory after loading a map. The Texture Detail option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.
finally!...4 months late but who's counting
the explanation for texture detail is confusing...doesn't change the base textures but only the 'perceived' resolution?...then why so resource intensive?
why so resource intensive?
It's the sharpening bit that's the killer.upsampling with adaptive sharpening
Someone posted this comparison screenshot over at the Steam forum,

My brother loved the game. Too many people on this forum are too busy looking at details instead of enjoying the game. I wonder how many people who complained about this held their tongue when it came to skyrim.

SSDs are popular but you don't HAVE to install on a SSD, I have a 120gb primary SSD and 22Gb for a game install is about £30 worth of hard drive space, about the same cost as the actual game.
Simply install it to a 2nd hard drive, HDD space is dirt cheap these days (with minor exception of factory flooding temporarily inflating HDD prices), I have 8Tb of HDD space, boohoo 20gb :'(
