I am running Rage on my system, and it runs fine. I wonder why people say that this game crashes a lot?
My only complaint is that the game is VERY confining, you can't go anywhere.

This game just won't die on these forums

the majority of Rage's complaints revolved around its godawful textures.

who cares about the space it takes up...this is not 1990, most people have at least 500GB hard drives...I wanna know where the hell that 2nd promised patch is

Not with the SSD revolution, disk space is a major concern for a lot of gamers these days. I am curious to try Rage, the atmosphere sounds interesting but as I understand it the story is fairly shallow? Once its 5 or 10 bucks I will probably bite.

You are correct, this is 2012 and SSD's rule now. This is not 2008. Get with the times.

The game was shitty upon release. They fixed the defects but it should never have been released the way it was. It was just a sloppy and disrespectful way to go.

SSD's do not rule now...most people use them as boot drives...mechanical drives still rule today

Most people dont have 400 dollar graphic cards either so whats your point???? Something dosent have to be popular to rule. Derp.

I'll make it simple: most people do not use SSD's as gaming drives today...hence mechanical drives still dominate...hence 20GB is nothing on a non-SSD...got it?

Lets not be rude here guys. Gamers probably have more SSDs than the standard user as they are often concerned about performance in general. I am sure the standard disks still rule but that is definitely on the decline. Now lets hug!

Oh what you ment to say is hard drives are more popular, not that they dominate ssds in general. Well obviously this goes without saying here. Choice of words matter bro.

It's typical id. Fun to play; shallow storyline. It that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then pass on it.

It's more what you get for the space spent. I would be 100% ok with 50GB games but only if said games looked it. You want all that space? I'd better see where it is going. I want shiny visuals, meaning great textures, lots of unique models, all that kind of shit. However if you give me a huge game that is just huge for no apparent reason, I'm going to be annoyed. It takes time to download bigass games and I only have so much space on my SSDs (and yes I use them for gaming, there's no point in buying a fast drive and not having your apps on it). When I spend it I want it to be worthwhile.

Haven't played it since it came out. Every time I moved all the scenery would blur and then snap back into place. I have no idea if they corrected it or not. Just went back to playing Borderlands.

Speaking of Rage, patch 1.2 just hit the Steam servers.

RAGE 1.2 Patch Release Notes
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This RAGE patch adds some new features and addresses various compatibility and performance issues.

New Functionality
------------------------
Texture Detail: Enabling Texture Detail will improve up-close texture quality by performing upsampling with adaptive sharpening. This does not update or increase the resolution of the base textures included with the game but improves the perceived resolution and crispness of textures. This is an intensive operation and is only recommended if you have a quad-core CPU or higher. Please disable this feature if you encounter poor performance, stability issues or are given a notification that the game has run out of memory after loading a map. The Texture Detail option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.

Transcode Benchmark: A new benchmark has been added that determines how quickly texture data can be translated from the compressed format on your hard drive to a format that can be used by your video card. The higher your score, the faster your PC is able to make higher detail texture data available. This is not a traditional benchmark that runs through a scene of the game and returns a min/max/average framerate based on hardware and video settings. Other than the GPU Transcode option, the score will not be affected by changing any video settings. The Transcode Benchmark option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.

Error Messaging: If you attempt to apply video settings on a system that is not capable of handling them, an error may come up stating that your system ran out of memory. You will be allowed to continue, however, it is recommended that you either reduce your video settings until this message no longer occurs or you will be asked to restart the game with lower video settings. If you ignore this error and continue playing without altering your settings you will likely encounter texture corruption and/or system instability.

Automatic Video Settings Fallbacks: When an advanced video setting fails to apply, the setting may be set back to a safe default. Anti-aliasing will fall back to NONE if the allocation of a multi-sampled FBO fails. Texture Cache will fall back to SMALL when the allocation of a large texture cache fails. Texture Detail will fall back to OFF when large page table allocations fail. On failure, these settings will automatically fall back to safe values without the need for user input.

Patch Changes / Fixes
-----------------------------
- Fixed crash from potentially having stale transcode jobs in flight when switching between texture cache sizes.
- Fixed crash from using SIMD optimized memcpy with a PBO pointer that is not 16-byte aligned.
- Fixed GPU transcode option always turning off when restarting the game.
- Fixed progression in Dead City where player could not advance through sliding door en route to the defibrillator upgrade.
- Fixed CPU feature detection.
- Fixed issues with launching MP by using double quotes around path name.
- Fixed lack of texture detail on parts of the screen at high resolutions due to limited feedback analysis buffer.
- Fixed thread stack space usage and freed up 700 MB of virtual address space.
- Re-enabled UBOs.
- Adjustments to default VDM values for balance.

Hmm, wonder where the 16k textures are. Carmack said a few months ago they were looking at compression utilities for it.

I suspect this means DLC coming in 3... 2...

finally!...4 months late but who's counting

the explanation for texture detail is confusing...doesn't change the base textures but only the 'perceived' resolution?...then why so resource intensive?

From bland fuzzy texture to bland sharp texture. i.e., a bland fuzzy looking radio sitting on a shelf will still look bland but a little sharper (perceived) textures.

Someone posted this comparison screenshot over at the Steam forum,

That actually looks decent to me, albeit a tad oversharp. Looks as though it's only sharpening the diffuse map, so the amount of aliasing doesn't seem to increase much.

Not bad.

My brother loved the game. Too many people on this forum are too busy looking at details instead of enjoying the game. I wonder how many people who complained about this held their tongue when it came to skyrim.

But of course! PC gaming is about taking screen shots and whining, not about playing games!

Oh for the days of early quake and unreal when we all made our games look like shit to remove details so we could see the asshole we were shooting at better. ;)

I kinda liked this game, after I spent 3 hours reading/testing/tweaking the cfg/ini files. The driving is a little lame, but has its moments. Wingblades are cool. Patch has me interested again.

The pictures here of the sharpening effect pretty much show it all. It's kinda like an ugly Photoshop edge enhancement filter. The only real way they can fix the textures is to just not use ugly textures.

anyone play through a few levels with the new patch?...how is performance with a GTX 580 (or equivalent) with Texture Detail enabled?

Didn't have any problems with Skyrim. Of course after Rage, Dead Island, and Sword of the Stars 2 you kind of can't help but shake your head and be patient. The future of PC gaming, release it early and fix it later. ~sigh~

Honestly, I really do like the game. It was fun, weapons were fun, driving was fun, and when it didn't do weird graphical things, it looks fucking amazing. And with the new patch, it looks better. I seriously hope though that Carmack and Willits wakes the fuck up, makes things PC first and a more stable engine for ALL GPU manufacturers. As in DON'T FUCK UP DOOM 4!

SSDs are popular but you don't HAVE to install on a SSD, I have a 120gb primary SSD and 22Gb for a game install is about £30 worth of hard drive space, about the same cost as the actual game.

Simply install it to a 2nd hard drive, HDD space is dirt cheap these days (with minor exception of factory flooding temporarily inflating HDD prices), I have 8Tb of HDD space, boohoo 20gb :'(

The big issue, for me, with the graphics is just how much the bad textures stand out. It takes a lot to pull me out of a game, but that does. It's totally disconcerting and so painfully obvious that it's impossible to ignore. Characters and weapons mostly look good, and some textures don't look but, but when you come across one that is really bad it just rips me out of game. Doesn't help that the shooting is serviceable, but it's just there. If it was more run and gun like Doom or Quake I think it would be a lot better, but it's just not built like that. It feels lot like Borderlands without the co-op or RPG elements. That isn't a bad thing, but I don't like Borderlands single-player.

I do basically the same thing...I have 2 separate hard drives installed both with Windows 7...with my 256GB SSD I install all DX11 games...with my 640GB WD Caviar Black I install all other games

plus with my SSD I keep an additional 20% free so that lowers the total space even more...so even if RAGE was DX11 I still wouldn't have installed it on my SSD as 25GB is too much for one game on my SSD
