TF2 Spy Update!

Riftsaw here providing secondary confirmation. Update is live. I repeat: Update is live.

Time to join the spy/sniper/pyro/sniper/pyro/spy/nooneisgonnaplayheavy/engineer clusterfuck.

Edit: Holy hell, everyone just jumped on at once. My speed just took a nosedive into the teens.

getting a pretty fast DL speed, even now....

read the update notes... holy shit... valve added a ton of new content for this update....

really awesome company.... not many studios that give back so much to their fans like this....

the ingame loadout screen keeps bitching about not being connected to steam. I can't really even get myself to medic without my ubersaw so I'm gonna hold off until that clears up.

Sweet, updates out! too bad mine's download incredibly slowly.

Can't wait to go pyro on 6000 spies.

ahhh, This RPG BS is retarded...I play tf2 because it is an FPS not an RPG, If I wanted to throw my life away I'd play WoW.

I played for an hour, got 4 spy and 5 sniper achievements, I exit TF2 then go back in and they are all gone, I didn't see any new weapons "laying around" while I was playing so yeah, This update is fun...

They should've left the unlocks how they were, Tied to achievements...Who gives a damn if people farmed them

ugh ive crashed 3 times in the last 15 min i giving up for tonight. WAY TO FAIL VALVE i thought better of you once

ugh ive crashed 3 times in the last 15 min i giving up for tonight. WAY TO FAIL VALVE i thought better of you once

hahah you can say that again

spy stab spy = crash, and with the update about half the team is spy and the other half are snipers; see the problem?

Yeah, wtf is the deal with "finding" new weapons? Someone explain this please.

Why would you "find" new weapons? You're supposed to get a certain number of achievements to unlock stuff, just like all the other updates.

check the update news- under general. It's now a random drop.

Not anymore!

Welcome to WoTF2!

lol wowified tf2... Pretty soon we can level our chars and do raids for epic gears YA?

I can see that, but I play very casually so it's nice for me.

It's really more annoying for those of us who have played TF2 for a while, and gotten the current dozen+ unlocks the hard way - by many hours of work.

I mean, it'd be like some n00b signing up for WoW, and in the trial period killing some random creature, and suddenly BAM, he's level 10. And later in the day, kills another and suddenly BAM...level 20. 2 days of 'casual playing' and he's now level 60 through random drops.

I'm sure it IS more fun for him that way.

But for people who have been with the game since day 1 and spent 2 or 3 months grinding their way to 60 the hard way...it's rather off-putting.

Update info

Team Fortress 2 Update Released
May 21, 2009, 5:33 pm - Valve - Product Update
Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Maps

Added new map, Pipeline. Pipeline is the first map in a new game mode named payload race, which uses two carts in each map instead of only one like traditional payload maps

Added new arena map Sawmill

Added new arena map Nucleus

Added new community payload map Hoodoo

Updated Dustbowl to fix not being able to jump into the window in the first building of the second stage

Sniper Changes

Added new sniper rifle replacement, The Huntsman. Instead of a sniper rifle, you have a bow that allows you to move around faster while firing, and fire more quickly than the sniper rifle. Works better at medium range than the standard rifle

Added new SMG replacement, Jarate. If thrown on an enemy they will take more damage for short period of time. Also extinguishes flames on yourself or allies

Added new SMG replacement, The Razorback. Will protect you against a single spy backstab, and stun the spy for a short period of time. Comes with a 15% move speed penalty for the wearer

Standard sniper rifle now shoots through friendly players

Added 54 new Sniper voice lines

Added 35 new Sniper achievements

Spy

Added new revolver replacement, The Ambassador. First shot is very accurate and will cause a critical hit if it hits an enemy's head. Accuracy is poor for a period after that

Added new watch replacement, the Dead Ringer. When armed, you will appear in all ways to die to the first damage you take from an enemy. You'll be cloaked for 8 second after taking this damage. Upon de-cloaking you'll make a loud, distinct sound

Added new watch replacement, the Cloak and Dagger. Your cloak meter is only depleted when you move, so you can stay invisible indefinitely if you're standing still

Spy name tags now show up properly when disguised as their own team

Fixed a bug that would cause spectators to see disguise weapons incorrectly

Fixed a bug where enemy spies disguised as friendly spies would have cigarettes that didn't burn

Fixed a bug where overhealing disguised spies would show the wrong overhealing amount to the medic

Made it more obvious on first person view model when your motion cloak is out of juice and you are partially visible

Also made it more obvious on first person view model when you're bumped while cloaked

Improved the way your disguise weapon is determined to make it clearer and fix a couple of rare issues

Spies disguised as enemy spies now get a random mask to help complete the disguise, and their target id will be set appropriately

Spies disguised as medics now have an Ubercharge: line in their disguise target info

Spies outward facing "disguise health" now matches their disguise target when they first apply the disguise

Spies can now pick up health kits for their "disguise health", even when uninjured

Disguise UI doesn't show up in minimum UI mode (hud_minmode)

Spies that disguise as a player using an unlockable now show that unlockable in hand

Spies can now use enemy teleporters

Added 70 new Spy voice lines

Added 34 new Spy achievements

Scoreboard changes

Dominations no longer get wiped when teams switch sides

Dead players draw slightly darker in scoreboard

Converted class labels to class icons

All players now display the total number of people they are dominating

General

You now find new and old items as you play, instead of through achievements

Fixed a bug that would cause the scout's ball to regenerate at inappropriate times

Demomen can now detonate their stickies while taunting

Flamethrower's air burst now extinguishes fire on friendly targets

Grenades and rockets deflected by a pyro under the effects of Kritzkrieg will now be criticals

The Heavy and Sniper now have new custom death animations

Fixed payload HUD not updating properly if you join in the middle of a match and the cart isn't moving

Engineer's dispensers now give 20%, 30%, or 40% of player's max_ammo (for each ammo type) on each use, based on the level of the dispenser

Added -sillygibs commandline parameter which will allow the non-violent gibs to be enabled

Added a new taunt for the Kritzkrieg, which also heals for 10 points

Improved the deathcam camera handling used when a player plays a custom death animation

Added missing chalkboard and serverbrowser images for community maps shipped in previous updates

Removed "Final" from map names in the serverbrowser quick list

Servers

Added "sv_allow_voice_from_file" convar, which defaults to 1. When set to 0, it'll prevent clients from using the "voice_inputfromfile" feature to broadcast wav files over voice

Enabled "sv_allow_wait_command" convar, which defaults to 1. When set to 0, it'll prevent clients from using the "wait" command

6 hours of playing tonight. No unlocks. Would have had all of them playing legitimately through the previous achievement system(non-farming). Sad.

I agree and understand completely. I just don't mind either way I guess. I kept getting my ass kicked with all these weapons I didn't have and now I guess I won't have them either way. Looks like a lot of people are complaining though, Valve will probably backpedal.

I hope they add the old system into the new. That way casual gamers can get random weapons, while hardcore ones can get them thru achivements.

Seems the unlocks are now gotten by picking up ammo; looks like standing in front of the cabinet is the way to get unlocks now.

Sucks getting unlocks as a medic since I rarely ever pick up ammo.

The new system sucks IMO. I played for about 3 hrs today before I actually unlocked anything at all (luckily my first unlock was the bow that I wanted to try out). A friend of mine got way more random unlocks than I did, but he also a bunch of duplicate unlocks; I think he ended up with maybe 2 different items in the end.

I have only been playing TF2 for a few days now, so I'm still learning the classes and weapons, but I much rather have something concrete that says "Do this: Get X Weapon" like the old system. They are supposed to say how exactly the system works tomorrow in their blog, so we'll see if it is indeed completely random (it sure feels that way) or if there is some trigger.

gah, just give everyone the option to use the new weapons... the nobody gives a shit after the first hour of new weapons and goes back to the classes they normally use...

Like scout.. I use the sandman + regular shotgun + pistol... Pyro is... regular everything... haha...

And I never play spy/sniper so it doesn't matter to me anyways, but the bow-n-arrow sounds like fun...

Some say the unlocks are now completely random and you can unlock the same item you have already 'achieved' multiple times. WTH. It should be linked to achievements, if not the longevity of this game will be compromised. I might as well unlock all achievements at once as they are now absolutely fucking meaningless. I too feel aggrieved that Valve should cater to casual players. The fanbase is already there why spoil it for the rest of us?

Also what's wrong with the class icons, can we have text back please, easy to read and I don't want to have to learn new signs. They look like they were created by a 2 year old in Paint

Disaster, my favourite server has pulled cp_junction and replaced it with plr_pipeline! Pipeline is a load of dogshit in comparison, not impressed with the level design at all. Junction is geared towards explosive weaponry and ambushing, I'll miss that.

Sorry to moan but I'm annoyed. I think I'm turning into one of those Steampowered posters that always complains when there is any change! ( http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=869264 similar sentiments)

I was excited for this update but now I'm disappointed. Sorry Valve, I'm one of your biggest fans but FAIL for me. I can only hope Valve listens to the feedback and makes a backtrack as they have ruined what was great with stupid idle tinkering.

I fear I could lose interest in the game now. :(

It'll all get smoothed out eventually... honestly every "class" update has sucked immediately after until everyone got accustomed to the changes.

Eventually they'll finish updating it content wise, (Except maybe new maps) so people can just enjoy the game as it is :) ...

Then they can release TF3, or 4 team TF2 mod, or an MMOFPS of some kind... Planetside was epic, 100 vs 100 vs 100...

Some of the items are cool but I'm disappointed in the dumb unlock system now. I also don't like the hats. The game is getting goofier and it seems the game is also turning to a causal game just like WoW did. I'd say stop with the dumb hats, dumb items, and dumb unlock system. How about keeping it a bit serious and a balance between hardcore and casual.

But it should be even for everyone. Otherwise you have a two tier mess

I'm confident Valve will listen to the community and make the amendments. They always do, so kudos for that

I'm with you on that.

The new unlock system is a game wrecker for me and near as dammit 100% vehemently disliked by the community. There are petitions, Steam groups set-up to join already to oust it. Really whomever came up with the random unlock idea should be taken outside and flogged. I'm surprised it was vetoed in the first place. The consensus is that it's too late to reverse the changes. Sad

random unlocks is totally crap. friend played for 9 hours, got like 21 new achivements...and he ended up with no unlocks. I show up for 90 seconds and randomly get award jarate.

I will also miss achivement servers. Those were so much fun in the past.

Total crap indeed, got an unlock for Force-a-Nature which I already have! In fact I have all 12 milestone achievement weapons. So the chances of getting a new item are a 1 in 2 chance. Hooray for the spy and sniper update but what's the point if it could take weeks of playing and I end up with 10 Natascha's?! I was gawled to see a noob running around with the Huntsman, that was it for me.

Oh well, this is a good reason to try out L4D which I haven't touched since I bought it

I'm pretty sure that those achievement servers are the main reason why valve went to the random unlocks. Some people got them the hard way (by playing the game) and the rest got them through achievement servers or cheated via/shitty scripts and hacks.

valve didn't like people doing that, so they took it away :(

sucks... I worked very hard to upgrade my medic without ever once stepping into an achievement server. Now some schmuck can get the same shit in 5 mins

not sure if this was asked/answered already but I don't have time to search:

How does the Razorback refresh? Do you have to pick up ammo, go to the locker, or is it on a timer?
