Tethering vs Mobile Broadband

I currently have T-mobile and I will be travelling out of state, I am thinking about either adding a data plan to my phone to tether on my laptop, or getting an ulimited mobile data plan with Vrigin mobile...I did not mention the other carriers because I noticed they are more expensive, or they put you on a contract, and you are also limited to data usage. I am trying to go the cheap way out with at least 3g connection and I would like to have some input which would be the better option, or is their another option that I do not know about?

Virgin runs off of Sprint which will have much larger 3G coverage than your tmobile phone will depending on where you are going. Though if this is a one time thing and your tmobile phone has 3G coverage I'd just add the data plan for a month and tether if you can.

I have unlimited t-mobile data, and just recently my broadband went out (roommate not paying) so I tethered to my Vibrant for a couple days. I was just throttled down to a measly ~5k/sec lastnight and received a message that I've gone over data usage until the new cycle. I did download a couple movies with it worth ~2gb along with whatever I normally use, maybe 1gb a month just browsing the web. Shouldn't do that apparently. It was SSL encrypted too so they look at usage for sure.

riot8ap....what is the cost for the unlimited t-mobile data, & can the company charge you extra for tethering, if so how much?

Tmo doesn't care if you tether as far as I know. Infact my new MyTouch 4g came with a wifi tethering app preinstalled. I Think Tmo just cares about when you hit 5gb.

Edit: and I just checked my MyTouch 3g that Tmo updated to 2.2.1 & it has USB tethering built in that didn't used to be there as well.

bummer, I should of waited for the mytouch, I ended up with the G2

check your settings.. I am fairly sure its there.. I checked my mytouch 3g after seeing a post saying it was included with 2.2

Yes, T-Mobile has a 5gb soft cap where after that point, they'll send you a free txt message stating that you'll be throttled for the remainder of your bill cycle to very low speeds. I just signed up with Sprint and have an Epic 4G. I've tethered that to my PC, and have downloaded so far over 15gb in Steam games and no throttling at all. That should be the case, since I am paying $10 extra for "premium data" on the Epic 4G, that happens to all 4G device owners on Sprint, whether or not they are in a 4G coverage area or not!

its free until everyone starts being douche bags and sprint reconsiders the unlimited data part. that being said, I have pulled close to 6-7gb per month.

what service do would you guys recommend where they dont even cap you @ all?

i was thinking of going with verizon.

do you think if i was playing games it would send a lot more data than surfing the web?

In a word, yes.

Also, I don't care who the provider is, your ping will be high in any game you play VS any decent home setup like cable or dsl.

yeah thats true. i want to go under my uncle for verizon but i dont know if they will notice me tethering and being capped within a week would be terrible. goin n 2 months without internet or tv is dumb

I know right, who do they think they are using the unlimited data service that they paid for to its full potential.

My latest t-mobile 3g speed test was 4.3mbit down / ~760 up. More than playable, as I used it for almost three most as my main source for gaming.

I never got a text message about hitting 5gb though, and I'm 90% or so sure that I did hit 5gb.

Get Alltel service if it is still available in your area and if it is transitioning to AT&T. Alltel has unlimmitted bandwidth on their contracts, and when you transition over to AT&T you get to keep your Alltel contract.

There is a potential huge speed increase as well:
Alltel/Sprint/Verizon CDMA 3G is around 2.5mpbs
AT&T UMTS 3G is around 7mbps

If you've got an android phone running froyo, you should have no problem tethering for free. Not sure if any of the bloated shit like touchwiz or motoblur removes the option, but it's built into the system on 2.2 and up. There are apps available on the market that will do it if you're running something older, or it has been removed from the menu.

I'm pretty sure all the big names will throttle you depending what you're doing, but for me I just like having it available in case I'm away from wifi. Has worked fantastically well on my nexus one, but then again I don't use it to download multiple gigs of shit, so I've never been capped.

Right on.

Here is Wifi Tether:

Some phones due to a limitation with the hardware can only do ad-hoc which some devices do not support. Sony PSP's, Google CR-48, most corp Windows laptops do not support ad-hoc networking for security reasons.

Here is Wired Tethering

This will show up as a Ethernet port when you use it on your device.

Playing games online doesn't use a lot of bandwith. I don't think you'ld do more than 100MB an hour. I played a good bit of WoW tethered through my Nexus One and my ping would range between 200ms and 400ms. Not amazing, but good enough for tanking and healing.

Exactly - the biggest limitation with gaming on a cell connection is latency, not bandwidth.
