Testing new hard drive

I got my hands on a new WD 1.5TB drive today and want to run it through some paces before I put it into service in my WHS server. What's the best free software out there to test the crap out of this drive?
 
I was under the impression that the manufactures tools just scan the drive and don't simulate use. Is the scan from these tools enough?
 
You could download the bootable version of DFT (Drive Fitness Test) and run it. Just do the advanced test, and if it comes back 0x0 with a green screen it means your drive is good.
