I have a new I7 system with the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P and I don't know how to monitor my temps. Do I need to download CPU-Z? Any one?
 
real temp, speedfan, and coretemp all do temp readings at the DIE level.. its usually personal preference on which one you like.. but real temps probably one of the better ones for an intel system where as coretemps better on the amd side.. and speedfan allows you to monitor all system temps..
 
real temp is nice, doesn’t support old CPU’s like the one at my work (P4 660), but SpeedFan and EVEREST supports it, as far as I noticed they all give the same exact temps but I prefer EVEREST cuz its more comprehensive and neat, btw I noticed now that EVEREST reading to the CPU fan speed is about 2 RPM more than speedfan
 
I know for sure that Realtemp reads the Tjmax that is stored in the i7 during factory calibration. At Tjmax the CPU issues a PROCHOT interrupt and will start throttling. Several deg C above that it will go into thermal shutdown.

The point is that before the i7's the Tjmax value that is used to calculate the actual "real world" die or core temp was not known exactly. This led to mistakes in reporting temps by all programs. With an i7 it is now exactly known (because the factory calibration can be read from the CPU) and you should use a program that has been updated and can read the Tjmax from the CPU cores. Realtemp does this.

Use whichever program you like best as far a display, features. etc. They both should be very accurate and agree each other within 1 C (any differences would likely be because of the CPU sampling time period and math rounding)

In theory your CPU can run 1 deg C under Tjmax 24x7x365 for 3 years (warranty period) or longer with no adverse effects on CPU life etc. In practice most of us like to stay 10-20 deg C below Tjmax at full load all cores. The "show distance to Tjmax" option which shows you the thermal "headroom" just like it sounds, how many deg C until you hit the Tjmax value, is IMO more important than what the actual real world temp is. What I am trying to say is that if the CPU is rated for a Tjmax of 1000C it is more important to be a comfortable margin below that and once that is done it does not matter (other than bragging rights ) if the CPU runs at 500C, 700C or 850C, you are below the design thermal "I am hot" value" and should be good as far as reliability and life is concerned. Of course the standard rule of cooler is always better still applies.
 
for the 45nm CPU's is it right that the tjmax in core temp is 105 and in real temp it's 95?
 
c2q 45nm no, i think its 100C, firas.. both programs allow you to modify the tjmax setting..
 
RealTemps just released V3.0 with I7 support. I got that and will try it out.

Just get one of the programs mentioned and use it. All any of them are good for is a reference.
