So my aging video card just kicked the bucket. I was running a 6800 OC (old and busted, yeah I know). Anways, I think I want to wait on the 10.1 compatible cards for my next big purchase, but that means I need something to tide me over in the mean time. I figure that I should be able to equal my previous performance for pretty cheap these days, but I don't know what would be the best performance and value. Can I get something to tide me over of comparable performance to my 6800 OC for $100 or less? Thanks for the help.

BTW, I'm posting this from an old S3 Savage 4 based card, so I can't play ANYTHING right now. :(

8600GT is around $100. Not going to win any speed awards, but it's certainly better than the S3 ;).

Either that or look for a used 7900GS or something in the forums.

6800 OC...is that AGP?

Yeah, but my mobo will do PCIe as well, so no worries.

Ok...Best bang for your buck is probably a used X1950Pro or 7900GS in the forums. I think you could do $90-100 for a card like that. If you're buying new, 8600GT is best bang for buck. I've seen 8500GT's in the $70 range, but they are really crippled compared to the 8600GT.

just get the best you can now, then sell on eBay and get the best again in the future. ima vid card slut i go through 4-6 every year, be cool like me.:D

not into ebay....too many scammers. thanks, though.

How would the 8500 (and 8600 for that matter) compare to the 6800 OC? That's one thing I never really got a handle on... how well a new midrange card would compare to an older high end one.

the 8600gt would be better than a 6800gt and even 6800ultra. the 8500gt is just slightly better than the 6600gt so it would be worse than any 6800 card.

Yeah, I was going to say that a 7900GS is slightly better than a 7800GT, so that kind of puts it in perspective with regard to the vanilla 6800. 8500GT isn't really worth it IMO. I'd pay the extra $10-20 and just get the 8600GT, especially since you can get them under $100. The 8600GTS is a good card too, but it's probably $30 more than a 8600GT and they usually have rebates.

Either way, the X1950 or 7900GS are both better performing cards. I'd get one of those unless you have a problem buying used stuff.

If you buy an Evga card, you can step-up to a new card within 90 days and get the new card for MSRP-WhatYouPaid + shipping. Great deal since new cards will be @ MSRP when first released, and it allows you to get the full value back even though the card would have lost value otherwise.

So grab an Evga 8600gt and see if a new card comes out before next year that you want, if not, you can either keep the old one for as long as you want (lifetime warranty) or sell it.
