So I have decided to undertake my first fully custom case build for a media center PC that i'm making out of some spare parts I have laying around. This project will obviously take a good deal of planning and time to complete so i'm looking for the cheapest possible solution to temporarily store this machine while I complete the project. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Currently, the parts are just sitting on a spare table hooked up in an ad-hoc fashion. My other question is are there any dangers of just setting a HD on the table, hooking it up and going for it?

The only dangers are really the possibility of static shock and if someone bumps the table or the drive falls off the resulting g-forces could ruin the drive. If it fell of while running you can guarantee it will ruin the drive.

Beyond that you'd be looking at a cheap case.
 
I second leaving the PC out in the open with no case if the issues that PolygonGTC noted are not that serious to you.
 
You could always go the route of the "ghetto rig", and put it inside a cardboard box. Most of your screws should be long enough to make it through single layer cardboard, and you really only have to secure the motherboard and hard drive, imho.

You can always try getting a cheap/free case from your local computer repair shop. Plenty of times people will bring in their systems for repair, find out it's fubar, and just leave it there (and buy a new one). These guys usually hold onto them for a short period of time, in case they need to scavenge other parts out of the system that are still good, and will sometimes let you buy a case & power supply cheap, maybe even give it to you. :)
 
Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up finding an old case that should work temporarily. I've begun the initial planning phase of my case and i'm trying to keep school from getting in the way. Look for my Worklog coming soon!
