ok well iv had my gtx for about 2 years now, it ran every game maxed out ect. great card

so now that i play crysis i noticed it gets hot, about 70ish idle and goes to about 87 during crysis, now i took off the HS to check out the thermal paste. it looks fine, so i put it back on, do you think i should put artic silver on it, and if so how do you apply it on a GPU also my cpu is pretty up there aswell 40c idle and 52c load, im going to re-apply paste on the cpu as well

whats the correct way to apply it on a cpu its C2D e6420 should i do the "blob" or the line?
thanks!

I cant recommend using arctic silver on gfx cards as I wrecked one with it.
Best to use MX-2, and yes, its worth doing if you are suffering heat issues.

I apply paste in a line now, hasnt gone wrong yet.
Occasionally using a blob I didnt get a perfect spread over the whole core.
This is more important on a GPU due to their size, CPU cores are tiny now so its hard to go wrong with them.

go blob on the gpu and line on cpu?

and i think the tiger dirrect by my house only have OCZ paste:/ is that fine?

I use a line on both but was trying to indicate that a line should be used for GPU but a blob is ok for most CPUs/Heatsinks.
Yeah reading it again, I wasnt too specific :)

Ocz freeze isnt conductive/capacitive so should be ok.
I havent used it ever though.

Your temps are fine. You can apply better thermal paste but dont expect miracles as far as temperature drops. If you really wanna keep that GPU cool look into an aftermarket cooling solution. Accelero 8800 maybe?

I agree the Accelero coolers are great but the GTX cooler is expensive and massive (need to check will fit in the case).
The Accelero S1 8800GT cooler is super cheap and very good but wont fit the GTX.

I love my Accelero Xtreme 8800. Put it on my two year old 8800 GTX a month ago and the load temps dropped from 80C down to 50-54C. Bigger surprise was my 3dmark06 jumped 200 points with the same drivers just from running at load so much cooler. It is pretty large though - I have a full tower case so it wasn't an issue. And the 40-something bucks for it was a little hard to take for a two year old card. Just resigned myself to keep it another year to get some use out of it.

wel it takes up two slots, but the fans look like they extend out into the next slot space aswell

help your self out a little bit and after you get it back together use rivia tuner to get your fans to spin at 80% or 100% while you game. this has been a problem with cards for a while and some times they don't spin up when there supposed to. but you can manually make set it at 100% and watch your temps drop.

rody

ps what brand of 8800gtx do you have?

its XFX xXx ed, people say its an under clocked ultra. may explain the high temps. ok so i took off the hs on the gtx to check out the amount of paste, im going to buy it tomorrow, and i put it back on and i played crysis, all so a suden my screen is pixleing like crazy, to the point where i cant see, i manged to open "real temp" and my gpu was at 93c!!! so i shut off my pc let it cool down and now its at like 75c idle... any help?

OCZ freeze will work great on both your cpu and GPU, just put a blob on the center of your gpu, but not to much and on the cpu I would only use about as much as a grain of rice in the center and let the weight of the HSF spread it out, that way it will spread evenly.

Maybe a few degrees, but nothing earth shattering....

re-applied thermal paste, and in NTune i tuned the gpu fan speed up to 100%
so it idles at 63c and when i play a less demanding came like CS:S it goes to about 73load
and crysis it goes to 85

-edit- on crysis my gtx is at 94c:/ not 85
is that acceptable?

I have an XFX 8800GTX (not the xxx version) and my max temp reaches 85c also - that's normal. The fan runs at 60% until card reaches 85c then it revs up as needed to keep the card from getting any hotter.

I've never seen my fan speed go above 78% and max temp never goes above 86c.

I guess the xxx version runs much hotter.

If it's not artifacting it's fine. If it is artifacting, you have lifetime warranty through XFX; RMA, they will send you something better anyway.

I don't think XFX cares if you do or not, but if it's a morality thing, you were having heating troubles before you applied thermal paste.

i know, but if i say
" i was having heating problems so i applied thermal paste and its still hott" i would like that lol

can i RMA it if the card is that hott?

Check the warranty, yaknow, that thing you want us to check for you.

whats hott?

Unless it's artifacting, no, you cannot RMA just because it runs hot. They will return you the same card and you will be out shipping costs and time.

but thats the thing

when idle its runs around 75c then i play a game, it jumps to around 95+c depending on the map and game ect, and when it gets above 90c+ it starts artifacting

I too have big temp probs with 8800 GTX SLI. I'd love to use the Accelero Extreme 8800, but it's too tight of a fit with SLI. It would fit if I took off the back-plate cooler on my boards, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea. They get pretty hot so I assume they are doing something.

I'm thinking now to:

1) improve my case air flow instead since I have only one fan (ya I know, I never thought about it until I looked a pics of people systems in here).

If that doesn't work:

2) go to water cooling. I saw enough systems in the water cooling pics post to convince me that it's not *that* difficult. I wouldn't mind getting practice with WC on this aging system before building a new one. (Maybe a Swiftech setup to learn with).

Anyway, did anyone use this and take off the cooling plate on the back of their cards?

Thanks!
