I wanted to build the CHEAPEST computer I could build, while still having decent performance, and this is what I ended up with:

Got this case for $20. Came with 300W power supply, and front USB, audio, firewire ports.

Got this mobo for $5 after rebate. The CPU (800MHz), video card, sound card, and LAN card, are all built in! Even comes with a 56K CNR modem.

Got 256MB of PC2700 for $23 after rebate

Used the HDD that was originally in my Xbox (Seagate 9.5GB, 5400rpm)

Found an old 48x CD-RW drive laying around

Cost:
$20 - case
$5 - mobo
$23 - memory (this turned out to be the most expensive part of the project)

$48 TOTAL :D

I already have an extra keyboard, optical mouse, and monitor lying around, so those are FREE too :)

Some ghetto methods I used:

Homemade round IDE cables. Folded them up, and zip tied them every 2-3 inches or so :rotfl:

No fans screws? No problem! I just zip tied th case fan securely in place :rotfl:

This cheap 2nd PC is going to be for my girlfriend's little brother & sister. They both go to highschool and just need something basic to do homework, e-mails, and internet. Hardly any gaming at all.

I tried it out, runs like a champ. Granted it's not as fast as a 3.0GHz P4, but for what it's meant for, it works great. I even got the front USB/audio ports working :)

It could use a floppy drive. I'll be installing one once I take it to their house. I'll take the floppy drive out from their POS computer at home.

Nice...just got my Syntax ($5AR) board last night...got 2000 Server running with 256mb as well....

Nice little boards...I swapped the cpu heatsink though...mine was getting toasty (theres barely any heatsink under that fan) with one from a AMD K6/2 (go figure)...much bigger and cooler.

Nice little board for everyday use..now just hope the rebate come in...

"Installing teh Windows XP"

He probably just used something for demonstration and will tell his girlfriend's little brother and sister that they need to buy XP for themselves.

Where I live, the cheapest PC case is $50 >_< Thats more then you spent on an entire PC >_<

Pirate

stfu, the software isn't included in the price of his components...are you going to argue that he is using electricity to power that computer, and electricity costs MONEY?

Exactlly, and he misses the point about a fully functional computer for >$50. It's like looking at the Mona Lisa and saying, bah, look at the frame, it's crap.

Such a ridiculous computer. I thought that at $20, the case would've been the most expensive part around.

Sexy comp.

calm down w/ the pirate not a pirate shit.

he just didn't include the price in his setup, calm down.

"damn i spent like $2500 or so on mine.....you win heh heh"

me too, and the f-ing thing isn't even running yet!

well, if you read the title correctly , it says $48 Computer
and a computer consists of hardware and the OS.

and he said he install Windows Xp, which costs money, so he should include the overall price. but meh, nice little setup

and to think one of my friends has a good pc and only uses it for email, and internet, word processing
is like a ferrari but only in first gear.

maybe he gets it free, legally, from work like i do.

Anyway nice computer there. That's a real good idea for people's presents.

I did get the XP Pro disc for free :D

it's a Not For Resale version i got a couple of years ago

i searched for the mobo, and no results on tiger direct. i guess its out of stock :(

i had extra memory, drives, and hard drives around so all i would of needed is a nice case :( such a shame

I totally missed out on this deal, I hope they srounge up some more cause I'd really like one.

haha.. thats a tight little comp.

and any money M$ doesnt get makes me a little happier, but thats just me and my wicked crazy way of thinking.... ;)
