This is an interesting experiment to say the least. Instead of outright censorship, Google, Facebook, and Twitter are combatting propaganda with its own message as well.

Nearly half a million teenagers and young adults who had posted content with terms like “sharia” or “mujahideen” began last fall seeing a series of animated videos pop up on their Facebook news feeds.

Facebook is outright censoring whatever it feels like. Facebook considers any comment to the right of Hillary Clinton as being fair game.

Facebook considers any comment against the narrative as fair game regardless if it's coming from the political left or right.

Pretty amazing how American-based companies are moving towards censorship in droves - and it is censorship by definition when these actions are being put into actual use.

Interesting concept but it will be difficult to determine if it works until a few years have passed. I wonder how they would be able to quantify the data

Their site, their rules.

However, it's very evident that if you want information, the media and the news are not the place to find it. Damn near every news article you read about politics is an opinion piece. I want facts, not your opinion and skip the facts that don't support that opinion. With headlines that start with "Clueless Trump" or "Crackpot Bernie" or "Crooked Hillary", I know straight away that it's a heavily biased opinion piece and not a real news site.

Facebook and Google censor shit without giving you that easy to spot phrase. Putting in ads that go against your point of view (even if I don't agree with your point of view, I'll still respect it) seems a bit dirty to me, too. I want a site that is completely unbiased and people can share their opinions. But, that leads it to draw in those extreme folks - racist, hate mongers, terrorists, etc.. People just can't get along these days so it's difficult for that style to work. So, I don't know the solution. I just don't like the 'forced opinion' methods that others are pushing.

Viewpoint based advertising. I guess that would be the next step up from 'stuff you browse' based advertising. Since it is a private entity I guess they can do whatever they want.

Advertising g to adolescents has always been questionably effective at best.

I imagine this might get similar eyerolls as the "Not Even Once" campaign about drugs, or anti-smoking ads targeted at teens.

I have noticed this with Twitter and I am starting to not use it as much anymore. They are really really pushing Hillary as much as possible, it's really sad that they are going down this path.

How D.A.R.E. you.
I remember going through elementary school when the DARE program was in full force. But fuck if I can remember all the propaganda they fed us. I've learned more useful information about drugs from Youtubers like Psyched Substance than I ever have going through public school.

You can die from doing marijuana even once.

My parents taught me drugs were bad. Not pot, though. My Dad still smokes that shit. Old hippy. DARE didn't do shit except give me some extra pencils and a new ruler.

Also, one of our towns biggest pot dealer always gave my friend and I a handful of quarters and told us "Don't do drugs!". We played video games, and saw all the DARE stuff on there. He's still a great guy (he did get busted), but he still tries to keep kids off drugs. Adults? They can make their own decisions.

News hasn't been "news" for as long as I can remember. A much more accurate term is "opinion journalism." Of course, the very term is an oxymoron. Basically, you can't trust any source to give you a straight story.

Indoctrination camps are probably more effective. Terrorists use them, why not us?

Deprogram the little shits.

Question is, is it censorship based on political or social motivation or is it just done in order to eliminate legal responsibility as a defense against law suites. In all fairness, every group in this country with a bias or agenda has a legal team looking for reasons to sue in the name of their cause.

Google, Twitter and Facebook are run by the types of elites who believe they know better than the plebeians about what's good for them. It's about power, nothing anymore complicated than that. When you have as much money as Mark Zuckerberg, you don't want more money. The only way to elevate your status anymore is to gain more control over your domain.

Perhaps I remember a bit further back cause guys like Walter Cronkite, Mike Wallace, and Edward R. Murrow, they did news.

This is an interesting read about an event that had great impact on the news. It's about a time when TV news was a half hour enterprise that ran something like 6:00 to 6:30 and that was it. It was the begining of late night news and perhaps the birth of the news syndicates, CNN, etc.

What I find interesting is this quote;
Some critics found such verbal confrontations contrived and mawkish, with news taking a back seat to show business. Yet television newscasts have long been a mixture of entertainment and information; Nightline expanded the limits of an established genre.

What I would point out is the idea of how the news was seen as becoming entertainment when today we don't just see it as entertainment, we see it as an instrument for molding public opinion. The news was not always like it is today.

I have never heard of any rich fat bastard that didn't want more money. And ask any rich fat bastard, money is how you gain more control over your domain.

Or did you not learn anything from the last few months in regards the GOP or the DNC ?
