Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Added Multicore Rendering

This initial release is aimed at testing compatibility, so the option is OFF by default
To turn it on, go to the Options->Video->Advanced dialog, and check the "Multicore Rendering" option

Other Changes

Several performance improvements to decals and client bone/flex setup
A variety of alt-tab and mode switch fixes
Improvements to the way the engine initializes surround sound, fixing some specific hardware cases
Fixed a crash on exit in Vista 64

Is this multi GPU support, or mulit CPU core support? I'm assuming CPU, since the cvar was always available in the console, but was quite unstable. I'm guessing it fixes that.

I hope this becomes a source engine update in the near future. Anyway, no time to play right now, you guys should post any performance increases you may see.

I'd like to know if it's CPU core support or GPU core support as well.

I would guess it is fixed multi CPU core support. Since most any single GPU $150 graphics card can play most Source titles at really high settings anyway. Source has not really been a good GPU benchmark for a while. But it can still thrash a CPU depending on game and situation.

I guess I dont see the need, are people having that many performance issues?

With a 7900GS and e6600 I am maxing everything out and it runs great.

finally! 32 player servers can rape my frame rate at times. I hope this helps me out:D

I'm sure it's multicore rendering done on the CPU.

/downloads TF2 to test it

Well, I just played on 2fort with 24 players as a scout.

Before, I was averaging 25-30 hopping across the bridge etc.

Now, I'm averaging 35-40 replicating the same thing.

So, seems good.

Although, I did notice in my first server that there was a few random jitters etc. But,
that might've just been lag.

Further testing is needed before I decide to keep this setting on permanently.

maybe at 1024 x 768..LOL

with a Q9650 @ 4.1Ghz and a 4850 stock, even at 1680 x 1050 on a nice full 32man server and some maps i could dip below 30FPS with 8xAAand 8xAF on easily and often enough i had to turn down AA and AF.

i am sure it is cpu based since they have been talking about brining over some of the multicore code frm L4D for a while now.

A variety of alt-tab and mode switch fixes

THANK YOU! i always alt+tab out and every time it is a mystery as to what wont look right when i go back in.

Just played a 32player gold rush for a few minutes, and my minimum went from about 50fps to about 90! Loving this multi-core support!

Damn, everything seemed a ok then the game locked up on me. I could move my mouse cursor but it wouldnt bring up task manager when I alt tabbed:(

Hopefully they can get a stable build of this multi core support.

Yup, this update pretty much doubled my FPS. Now my minimum is around 50-60 on 32 player servers (X3 720 @ stock).

According to the Shack, it is a multi-core CPU thing, not a multi-GPU thing.

The latest patch to Valve's multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2 officially adds multicore rendering support, allowing users with fancy CPUs to take advantage of their myriad cores for faster framerates.

It's hard to know if their statement is accurate though.

Also, you have to turn it on manually, as it is disabled by default.

This update does wonders to my frame rate.

No crashes after two hours of playing as well.

On 32 man Goldrush, I used to get around 30 to 40 FPS, but now I maintain a solid 60 with very few dips below that.

My max FPS went down, but my minimum and average went way up.

Same option that L4D has, and it's the same engine, so why not? This is good to hear, the Source engine is largely CPU-limited anyway.

This is an unreal update the game is now liquid smooth on my 8800GTX. It always ran well but now it just runs unreal I don't think I've ever seen a game that makes such efficient use of the hardware.

It might be my imagination but it looks sharper for some reason as well.

Put another way if you would have told me you swapped out my 8800GTX for a GTX280 I would believe you. That is how much better I think it runs. The slowdown is just gone.

I'm not seeing any noticeable difference ... damn my fast video card!

It's not your video card. It's the 4ghz E8400 you're running. The Source engine is highly CPU dependant. If you replaced your GPU with say a 7900GTX you'd probably maintain the same framerates at the same settings because of your CPU.

Also crashing every 10-20 minutes, even with multicore disabled.

It might be CPU overheat I am noticing the game now utilizes 100% of my CPU all the time, which is something most games don't do.
Since when does CPU overheat shut down only TF2 and not the rest of your system? :p

And 100% load does not equate to the CPU overheating in a matter of 5 minutes...at all...with a decent cooler?

Crashing like a mofo. Couldn't get a good game going, almost the entire team and opposing team were crashing at the same time.

The game runs smoothly already, but multi CPU support is most welcome.

I'd go for stability over speed with this game, but I'll try it tonight.

The game now crashes every 5-10 minutes for me as well. And now for some reason even with multicore support disabled, it crashes often.

Looks like many other people are having the same problem on the TF2 forums. I was wondering why people kept coming and going so fast and it looks like it's the update that is causing loads of people to crash.

Went into a 31 player pub, My FPS jumped from like 150 in a lone server to just about 300 but during 31 player battles its still ~30

edit, at 1920x1080/medium

Fixed a crash on exit in Vista 64

My sweet dick, they actually fixed it.

i'm using Windows 7 7057 here, i've turn up all my video settings to max including AA & AF.. no more stuttering after enabling multicore here :)

Yeah I can only play for about 10 minutes before my game crashes.

Well Prime95 loads the CPU 100 and that is a stability test. So perhaps your system is unstable. Did you Prime test it?

I cannot enable multicore on L4D because of crashing so I'll probably avoid it here as well. My FPS are very high so I'm not too worried.
