Well one of my ax1200 PSU took a shit in myh 980x machine. and i also blew up a 470gtx. 470gtx was my fault. but im pretty pissed this PSU has died on me.

I will start folding again when the RMA unit gets here. IM on a streak of blowing hardware up and figured it would be best to shut down for a bit.

and to think i was maintaining my spot in the top 20 too.

Thats a shame :( Was that the PSU you were using with 4 video cards?
hope to see you back soon.

[hmm, could it be a cunning plan to make me slow down a bit?]

yeah... completely understand... my corsair 750 croaked...thought I had a bad mobo... well I did... but it was the psus fault... it test fine but its the common parts between 2 dead systems...

I have the 750w corsair that I bought used... they probably won't honor the warranty... 2 dead x58 boards and 2 dead 5870s...

I think I will give them a chance to rma it for me though...lol...

dead hardware is the name of the game. i'm sure most of us have a long list of dead hardware thanks to folding :p

Um yeah, let's see. Over a dozen dead processors, half a dozen dead dual-socket motherboards, 3-4 dead video cards one of which is a GX2, and as far as the topic of this thread is concerned, I would guestimate a half dozen PSUs in various conditions from completely non-operational to barely able to power up anything for a short period of time. One PSU was a surprise because it was a new Antec 750 that died last year after only a short period of use.

Anyway, that is what you get folding nearly a decade. I won't even bother recounting smaller component failures. Told you guys I doubt anyone on this team has gone through what I have.

You guys are starting to depress me...I use Corsair PSU's almost exclusively (an AX1200 on my SR-2 and the rest are 750TX's) and I've yet to have one die on me, but reading threads like this scare me. Hopefully they'll work out okay. I know the two times I've dealt with Corsair RMA's (DDR2 and DDR3 RAM) they've been top notch and have got me straightened out every time.

The Corsair Representative on the forums name / username is Mike Clements. Might drop him a note and ask him to see if they might be able to help you our on a second hand PSU. It wouldn't hurt to try, anyways.

welli just pulled the ax1200 out of chuck and stuck it back in my 980x main machine.

i have final this coming up week and need my machine.,

chuck will come back online when i get my rma unit in. and then ill start folding on both machines again

i dont mind killing hardware but i hate when they go in lumps. i had one time i burnt out 3 abit nf7 motherboards in a day.

Wow, sorry to hear about that and I hope you are back up and folding soon. So far, I havn't managed to kill anything yet, although I don't really run things on the ragged edge like some of you guys do.

The dead hardware bug had been relatively good to me. Killed a 9800GX2 and a PSU along the way, but that's really about it. Oh, except for that cheapass MSI mobo that died as soon as I loaded up a thuban in it.

Filter, hope you get back quickly

eh shit happens.. one might of been a dud thats all. i wouldn't be all that worried about corsair PSU's.

You're not alone, my WHS box died on me 2 days ago when the motherboard crapped on me. Luckily, I have a spare one I got from a RMA that I didn't put in use till now. I'm still working on it by installing the WHS 2011 version to evaluate and reinstall the FAH client.

Shit happens to everyone and the best attitude is to shrug off and move forward ;)

lol... I chalked it up to a dud... but don't think I am not hesitant at buying another...
my pc p&c 750w filled the gap just fine...

Thanks for the contact info though... I sent the guy a pm... If they want to rma it with me... I will give corsair another chance... if not... a psu should last more than a year and a half...

my 650tx served me for a good 2 years before it shifted to a rather sedentary lifestyle... it still works though... and I have shifted it around to a number of rigs... I am kinda a psu short without the 750watter...

Yeah, you figure that more of us here run Corsair PSU's than anything else so it was just a matter of time. for coincidence to occur.

well i couldnt resist folding so i ripped a PSU out of my smp machine and have chuck back up and running but still down 1 gpu and now an SMP and gpu client till my ohter psu comes back from rma.

It's better than nothing. Glad to have you back!

Folding is a drug far worse than crack or meth. Welcome back :)

The other thing you could do is just go out and get another PSU and use your old one as a backup when it comes back from repair. And then when you decide to add another folding rig, you're already partially there!

That's the spirit! You may be better off running just bigadv and no GPU until your other PSU is back from RMA. Either way, good to have some of Chuck back on-line.

Geesh you guys scare me. Been folding now 8 years and only lost one PSU. Using an old 500 watt PC power and cooling on a machine that was running close to 450 watts 24/7. Chalked it up to running to close to the edge. Course it did run 4 years though.

One thing... all my machines are on UPS's that filter the voltage. I hear them click in every once in a while, telling me my line voltage is sagging or surging. I am wondering if that is what is keeping me in good fortune. Not burning out components.

Just a thought...

How much hardware have you had committed to the cause in that time? The more systems running, the more can go wrong. In my case, I can lay blame largely on the fact that most of my hardware was used and abused before I ever folded on it. Buying second hand and cheap hardware is a two-edged sword. It's cheap but I don't expect it to last as long as NIB parts. Things could and will go wrong, especially with parts that have dubious history and condition. I will admit to running things to the edge at times but this is [H] - it's not only recommended, it's expected.

Well at one time I had 9 dual processors running. I was a member of 2cpu at the time and we all had duallies in those days. Was a big deal then but now I just have two machines. Do have dual GTX 460's in one of them. Single 460 going into the I7 machine.

I used to frequent 2CPU quite a bit! I also had several dually machines running (24 at one point). Haven't folded in a few years, some of these 12 core CPU's make me want to get back into it! It's sad, all I have at home now is a mac mini.(and a basement full of old Opteron & Athlon XP (L5 bridge hacked) duallies).

24 duals?! What architecture and was this all at home or work? Who did you fold for?

Yeah 24 duallies at the high point! It was a mix of AMD Athlon XP1700+, 2500+ systems and later on I had Opteron duallies: 4 Opteron 240 systems, 4 Opteron 246 systems. Most were just bare systems in 2u enclosures had a rack in the basement and everything. The vast majority of these systems ran Slackware Linux, though some were reserved for other actual functions on the network other than folding.

This was all at home and I folded for many different teams (2CPU, EOCF, and I think HardOCP as well, some of the boxes also ran SETI). I also did a ton of WU's as anonymous when I wasn't folding on a "team". It's sad, all of that money and most of that stuff is so slow anymore. I do have some stuff laying around that I could use now...a handful of Phenom chips and some Q6600 Core2Quads though I must admit that some of the new "server" CPU's look really enticing!

Oh no it's starting already! Just added in my macbook pro (not that it will do much), I'll see about adding some of the other stuff I have laying around this weekend!

Mwhahah....

now all you need is 2 or 3 sr2 rigs and you will be doing great...
:p

Ok, so I didn't know what you guys meant by SR-2 (I've been out of this stuff for a long time) so I looked it up. Holy shit I want!!!! I have some E-ATX cases that would fit those things nicely. Might have to move some money around into the "play" fund. What's really sad is one system these days is more powerful than all of the shit I used to have running.

I believe the SR2 is like a HPTX or something like that, which is significantly bigger than E-ATX. In fact, these SR2 guys here are folding naked partially because it is so challenging finding a case that fits that beast. It may fit an E-ATX case if you make some mods or do some restructuring though.

That is probably the "easiest" multi cpy monter to setup
It still requires tons of tweaking to get the overclocks... but it is quite possible to have 2 hexacore xeons running at 3.6ghz

that said... I am partial to amd... and would just as soon build a dual or quad G34 setup... but I don't have the funds for either...

There's a second hand SR-2 with hex-core processors and memory available from FLECOM on this forum if he hasn't sold it already. Look at his thread in the FS subforum of the DC section. BTW, sorry if I got you hooked again. I tend to do that to people but I swear most of the time it's unintentional. :p

well... I claim no such thing...

and I think Flecom already sold them...

Sorry guys, my rigs are offline until tuesday, stupid f***ing lodgers used up my data allowance for the month, fortunately i managed to save 3 out of 4 WU:mad::mad:

Didn't know, but it explains why the listing completely vanished from the FS thread. Glad he found a buyer.
Thread is still there... http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1582297

That sucks... where do you live that you have a data allotment?

I used to as well until I realized that the hassles both on the operational end and dealing with PG foibles can induce one to undergo a massive reality check...

Yes but the listing for the SR-2 itself isn't there. I had wondered about it because I never saw it mentioned anywhere that it was sold. Glad someone finally bought it.

I'm sorry to hear that. You had guests that used up your data cap that quckly? Would you like for the [H]oard to come over and beat some people up for you? :D

Back online as of 30 minutes ago, Regarding yours and Patriot's earlier comments. I live on the island of Jersey about 90miles of the south coast of the UK. Have a polish couple staying with us at the moment and they are in the process of moving back home next month. They have been purchasing lots of shiny new gadgets and torrenting blu- ray rips to to play on said gadgets. 80gb per month gone in 25 days:eek::mad:. Whilst it has been a pain in the arse for me for them it was worse, they use skype to call home every few hours - well that meant they had to take a 20minute walk into town with their big HP lappy and find a wifi cafe - somehow i don't think they will be so eager this month with the downloading.

Now what did I miss???
