T110 II - Upgrade Memory and RAID

I'm thinking of putting together a low end hardware platform based off the T110 II.

I would like to upgrade the memory and the RAID controller.

So, what memory can I get that works with it without paying the huge price from Dell?

I have an extra PERC5i card. Will that work in there?

If you go to www.crucial.com and run their memory scanner it will tell you what RAM you need for your box. The RAID card will work if you have a PCi-e card slot available on the board.
 
I had issues getting a perc5 to work in mine, I can't recall specifically what it was (it was a couple years ago I set it up), but it forced me to get something else. Can't tell you if it just my perc5 or a general incompatibility with the t110-ii. I got an ibm 5015 off ebay for pretty cheap, added a bbu and have been much happier (performance is much better).

For memory, I used these, they were the cheapest at the time, still might be:
W1333EB8GM (super talent) to get to 32gb.
 
I have a Dell SAS 5ir on my T110 II..no problems, I bought a Kingston mem kit from newegg....16gb kit I think it was..100 or so

The ibm 5015s I'm seeing on Ebay are over $400 each. I could see spending $250 or so on a different raid card but much more and it becomes more difficult. How different is that SAS 5ir from the PERC 5ir that I have?

I am also worried about running into trouble with drive compatibility with newer, high capacity SATA drives and a RAID card that's a few years old.

I think he meant Dell Perc 5ir.
 
The SAS 5ir is Raid 1 or 0, single channel..the Perc 5i is dual channel and can do raid 1/5/0 (if I remember right)
 
I needed a second host for my lab and almost bought (actually, did buy and cancelled this weekend) a second T110. Then I saw these Dell C6100s on ebay for not much more than I was going to pay for a T110 II, but with tons more capability. Additional Info.

Might not suit your needs, just passing it along.

Also, coupon HF9X1212V3TKTK takes $100 off a T110 II right now (expires 04/04/13) if you weren't aware.

Those are certainly more capable, but for a home lab where noise might be an issue (like mine, no basement to bury the jet engine in), a T110-II is great. It's virtually silent.

After replacing the fans, I'm hoping to have it as quiet if not moreso than my T110. But yeah, size, power, noise (unmodified), rack format, etc. means it's definitely not for everyone. I was just amazed at how much you can get for so little (relatively) and thought I'd share in case the info might be useful.

Don't mean to derail the thread further, carry on.

@markwo - Actually, that does look interesting. Would I want to add a hardware raid card or is onboard sufficient?
 
remember you are talking about essentially 4 individual servers, just in 1 case with a common power supply, and each node only has access to 3 drives.
 
Well, It was a nice thought but I'm back on the T110-II.

What about a IBM M5014 RAID card. Would that work in the T110-II? Is that a upgrade over the PERC5i?

I'm setting up two systems. I have one PERC5i card so I'll use that in one most likely unless the M5014 is a nice upgrade. It's reasonably priced on ebay right now.
 
It looks like the 5014 is the same part, but with half the cache mem (256 vs 512), and no standard battery. With no battery, that means it's essentially read only memory, you can't use write-back mode.

You can add the battery later though. That is what really helps performance (write-back cache mode), especially with multiple vm's running.

And yes, it's probably 2 generations newer than the perc5, so it should be quite a bit better. One thing to keep in mind is a lot of these controllers were meant for cases with forced air (including the perc5 - that thing gets seriously hot with no air), the T110-II doesn't have a whole lot of air moving. I got a cheap/quiet 80mm fan that I added in down in the bottom of the case, zip-tied to some of the plastic above it, so it's in-line with the M5015 controller, and used some of those slotted pci empty slot brackets so it can exhaust right over the card.
