System stable but startup/shutdown slow

Okay, I don't understand why my system is doing this but it kind of drives me nuts. I have an e8400 intel processor 3.0ghz overclocked to 3.5ghz. I have run tests and confirmed the system to be stable. However, upon startup of XP, all the programs seem to run slow until all the startup programs have finished. Also if I run programs such as Speedfan before this is finished it tends to lock up. After the startup programs finish loading everything runs fine and speedy. Then, when trying to shutdown the computer (or restart, same difference) it takes FOREVER. I don't understand how everything can be stable and running fine yet it causes long delays on startup and shutdown. Any advice? Also running on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P.

lets see, you tell us you have a bunch of crap that runs on startup and while that poop is being executed one program right after the other you also manually start something else and it take a while for it all to come up and your manually started program to take user input ?

And

Once all that stuff IS up and running you hit Shutdown and the machine takes a fair amount of time closing all the running stuff in an orderly manner, saving/re-saving configuration files and data gathered and doing who know what else before the machine turns off. Interesting as eventually the machine would/should shutdown and turn itself off. I wonder why you would care ? Just walk away man, have some faith.

Advice ? In order of seriousness (as in smile seriousness)
Defrag your drives.
Check for virus ( http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm - Microsoft scanner only one I completely trust but DL and install Spybot Search and Destroy. Watch that the mirror sites do not trick you into running some other bullshit scanner with clever/retarded ads with download button for morons)
Turn off (right click on the tray icon, look at the options and find "Start with Windows" and uncheck.) some of that crap until you actually need to use it.
Upgrade to a quad, the extra cores will help process all that junk faster when OCed to the same speed.
Sell that machine and load up DOS 6.3 on you sig machine and install Arachne. The startup and especially the shutdown, just hit the power button - cant get any faster than that, will amaze you.


Come on really ? I am trying to be funny, you already know what your problem is, its all that junk you are telling the machine to run all at once. But the virus thing is a distinct possibility. I would run ever reputible virus scan and program (clam win) you can find while munching on Turkey sandwiches.

Defrag and Virus check and turn off some of the crap. Really.

Trying to be a little funny but still serious, the virus thing if it really is responding much more slowly than it should on startup and shutdown. It takes time to send out 1000 herbal viagra emails and contact the bot master.
 
time to power cycle the microwave, the fridge needs a reboot as well.

Seriously, reinstall Windows.
 
Um, not trying to sound rude but I think you guys misunderstood what I was saying. It -only- takes a lot longer to load or shutdown -when- it is overclocked. This is a fresh install of Windows XP.

My hard drives are defragged on a daily (main partition), weekly (other drives) and monthly (system files) basis.

I do not have a lot of crap loading. I try to keep startup programs to a minimum. It's taking an abnormal amount of time to load them while it is overclocked.

EDIT: Oh wow, I feel like a total goober! I just reread my post and I saw that I didn't make mention that this was only happening when overclocked. No wonder you guys thought my question was so stupid!
 
you also said that it hangs when you open speedfan while other stuff is loading... i'd say this points towards it being a little unstable maybe.

What did you do to verify stability, exactly?
 
I ran Prime95 overnight. Speedfan works fine other than if I try to load it upon startup.
 
Sounds like you just got a really slow HDD....

I ran into the same problems when I tried to overclock my E6600 on a P5B-D three years ago or so. It overclocked fine up to 3.6GHz, but when doing so, starts an shutdowns would just take forever (on a fresh window install), and some monitoring programs would just hang. It was so frustrating that I just decided to revert back to stock speeds.

I just upgraded to a Q9550, and tried to overclock it a bit, and it seems that this problem is now gone for me (on the same motherboard). I am gonna do a run down of my system changes that may have fixed the problem, see if it might work for you:

-E6600 to Q9550 upgrade (improbable fix)
-Raptor HDD to Intel SDD (improbable fix)
-Updated motherboard BIOS (probable fix)
-All native SATA ports running in AHCI mode instead of IDE mode (most probable fix)

I am too lazy to pop my old parts in and verify the first two hypothesis. Try the last two, I also bet your motherboard is running in IDE mode with SATA drive if you are still running WinXP.
 
Sounds to me like the CPU's thermal throttling is kicking in as a result of too much heat from too much overclocking.

Improve your cooling or relax your overclock.

If you're confident your temps are fine then disable speedstep and c1e state in your mobo's bios and that could fix things for you.
