System safe for overclocking?

I'm going to venture into the world of overclocking! Now, I dont know if my PSU is to low or what good requirements are for overclocking because I've only done it on a videocard once. I plan to do it on my CPU...

I have (not the best system but on a budget):

A64 2800+ Newcastle @ 1.8ghz
Asus K8V SE Deluxe motherboard
Ultra X-Connect 400W PSU
768MB Ram (One kingston one ultra)
Ati 9600pro with silencer @ 500mhz
2 80mm fans and 1 120mm fan
Sound blaster Live! 24 bit sound card
D-Link wireless pci card

The cooler I have on the A64 is a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 CPU HSF with some AS5 on it. Idles at 33 degrees celsius.

Now I hear about the Ultra power supplies not being the best in the world, which got me worried when I was asked to up the voltage on my processor. Would my setup be stable at OC'ing the CPU?
 
Even though those psus arent the best quality the voltage variation shouldnt be too bad (as its mainly managed by your motherboard) so you should be able to overclock enough but for peace of mind you might look at an antec truepower or PCP&C PSU down the road, not neccesary but highly recommended.

Just give it a try, read the guides in this forum and see how high it'll go!. If it hangs or wont boot just reset CMOS and try again :). Your temps looks very good so i wouldnt worry bout that too much unless you o/c it a huge amount or increase the voltage quite a bit(which you shouldnt have to do anyway). Just keep it under like 60 for starters but anything lower is better heh.

Since it seems as if you're on a budget, a PCP&C is overkill for your needs. You should be fine OCing that thing. Have fun :).
 
You might have an issue with your RAM if I am understanding you right. The only way to OC that CPU is by upping the frequency the RAM runs at. Since you listed 768mb of RAM, I am assuming that you have 512 and a 256 or 3 sticks of 256.

Either way, they aren't going to be matched and you also listed different manufacturures, so they probably have different headroom to OC as well. Now if you choose to run a divider instead, then you could get the CPU to OC without increasing the RAM frequency.

Some thoughts,

You might be better off with 1 stick of 512 when you OC instead of 1x512 and 1x256.

Make sure you search through the forums on how dividers and FSB work on OCing. There are several guides that will give you lots of useful info.
 
its is an a64... you can just run a divider and then mess with the ram seperately.. overclock one thing at a time.. i would just got for it..
 
Now that I think about it, that MB might not have a PCI/AGP lock because it is the K8T800 (non-pro I think from what I've seen). That will limit your OC to about 210-220 FSB without SATA drive corruption and stability loss.
 
Hmm, well I am actually ordering a 512 stick of Corsair XMS ram and ditching my 512/256 sticks I have here.

You talked about SATA drive corruption also, would it matter if I dont use those? My hard drive is on an ATA and I dont think i will ever use the SATA ports. I know this board isn't the best board for overclocking (wouldn't mind a DFI lol) but I just want something a bit faster than what I have (who doesnt lol).

I was hoping to take my 1.8 2800 to about 2.3 and if it is stable then take it from there. But I think 2.3 is my goal for this setup. I'll read up a bit more and maybe even find out about the memory overclocking and post my results here!

For ATA drives its a little less sensitive but it still does happen.

That said, i ran a Celery 300a at 450 without a lock for like 9 months without my hdd giving up. But these days drives are more sensitive because they're cramming alot more onto smaller amounts of space. My advice would be to make sure you've got no data you dont mind losing and then just clock away. In the future though, could get a dif mobo if it does give out alot.
