I would not get any lga1366/X58s any more. This is a EOL platform. And certainly not at these prices. I paid less for my lga1366 system in April of 2010 than either of these. Get an i5 2500K and an lga1155 board.

It will depend on your budget and intentions for the system but if you are going to do a lot of VMs you will want to go with either:

1155 (z68 or P67) board + i7 2600/2600k
or
2011 (x79) board + i7 3820/3930k

The 2011 platform is more expensive in regards to the motherboard and CPU. However, if you are wanting to get 32GB of ram you can save by going with this platform since 8GB sticks are still far more costly than 4GB sticks (there are 2011 boards with 8 ram slots).

A lot will also depend on where you can buy from, and if you have a MircoCenter nearby since they have really good CPU/Mobo deals often.

there is a microcenter near by... at least i know someone that goes to one. i personally do not.. i google shop for a p/n and find the cheapest place...

my real intension for the machine isnt much..
some photo editing
LightRoom and Photoshop Elements

Video Editing
Adobe After Effects
Adobe Premiere Elements

when I say VM.. nothing massive.. i like running a win7 vm and use that to install trialware to.. office and stuff.. to keep my gaming/editing rig clean..

so i really dont need 32gb of ram either.. i could go 16gb ram.. i just saw 24gb for an extra $20..

funds of course are down low.. i dont really have the funds for any of this... got to figure this out..

if i cant get this mobo working... figure $100 back from person... puts me at $250... need to sell my nitro rc tmaxx and a few other things....

getting a bonus from work.. dont want to use any of that as I was planning on buying a canon 70-200 f2.8 mark 1 lens ($1400)....
oh well.. we will see...

Then you're gonna want to go to MC then as they have some really good deals right now on hardware that can't be beat. For example, they have the Core i5 2500K for $180 plus tax there. But they will knock off $50 off a bundled Z68 motherboard. As such, you'll be looking at around $270 to $340 total for the CPU and motherboard for a CPU and mobo combo that normally costs $350 to $400. Huge savings basically.

As for which mobo you should get, please answer the following question:
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.

Do note that the closest newest hardware release thats applicable to you is late April: That's when Intel is planning on releasing their new Intel CPUs, code named Ivy Bridge, and motherboard manufacturers will be releasing new motherboards using the Z77 chipset. The Ivy Bridge CPUs aren't game changers but basically a refinement of the current Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs. As such the Ivy Bridge CPUs will run cooler, use less power, will be roughly 10 to 20% faster clock for clock, and have faster onboard video. The Z77 chipset will just bring native USB 3.0 support (right now current Intel motherboards are using 3rd party USB 3.0 controllers that aren't always that great), full PCI-E 3.0 capability, and support for faster RAM. Though to be honest, the last two items don't really matter since A) You're not gaming with multiple GPUs and B) faster RAM may not show a noticeable performance increase.

There's also the possibility of new Nvidia GPUs around that time frame but I'm not sure if those will be within your budget.

so your recommending the i5 over the i7? there will be mostly multimedia stuff like video/photo editing but also some gaming.. i went back to the 360 for that but may slide a few games back in...

9. Raid - currently had 2x80gb sata drives in raid 0..found 2 more.. was gonna do raid 5 or 0... as i keep my data on a 1.5tb drive
firewire.. camcorder can and would like too...
im a SLI guy.. never did cross fire.. i have 2x9600gt's that would go into whatever i put together... i know there are cheap cards out now faster than both of them combined...

usb3, sta 6, esata would all be nice but i do not own anything compatible... onboard video.. no...

yeah im not a keep up with the jonses or technology.. just what works for me.... :D

thanks for your input too...

last night i was going to buy another xfx 780i on ebay.. guaranteed working.. should have.. would have been $100 shipped... grrrrrr it sold....

my main goal is to try and get the mobo i got from HF user working first.. if not.. ill then have to decide on something...

I'm mainly recommending the i5 2500K over the i7 2600k due to this statment from you:
funds of course are down low.. i dont really have the funds for any of this... got to figure this out.."
Since you live near a Microcenter, going for the 2600K setup would actually cost you an extra $150 as there's normally a $100 price difference between the 2500K and 2600K and the $50 off deal only applies to Z68 mobos purchased with the 2500K only, not the 2600K. So $150.

Yes the 2600K will provide better performance in the video editing and the like. But if you can't afford the extra $150 for it, no point in getting it. With that said, if you can afford it, if the extra performance is worth it to you, and if you're doing a ton of video editing, then yes spend the extra $150 for the 2600K.

Let us know what happens with that motherboard. If it doesn't work, are you willing to wait the two months for Ivy Bridge?

im willing to wait 2 months..
if this mobo wont work.. ill check the prices on that stuff.. if not... maybe wait for Ivy Bridge and go new..

i built my q6600 with help from you guys and got what.. 5+ years out of it!!!!!! so maybe it is time for a new build... last time i bought EVERYTHING with mail in rebates.. and built a sweet machine for $1200....

hopefully the Ivy Bridge being new wont be the premium on the wallet!!!

I also checked MC's ad, and right now there are only two combo deals involving Intel CPUs:

1) $50 off a combo with an i5-2500K CPU and a Z68 motherboard
2) $20 off a combo with an i5-2550K CPU and a PCI-e GPU

Obviously, the second is much less attractive than the first.

Get the i5 sandy bridge
Don't buy the first gen i7, or repair your Q6600 PC, it's not rentable. SNB killed everything that was before it.
i7 is intended for hardcore video editing and transcoding, and I assume your kid is likely a mid level or casual/amateur creator, he wont need the i7 to save those few seconds when working.

didnt get to mess with that mobo last night... forgot my kids had a hockey banquet... tonight im hoping...

oh and acer_sheep... yeah i know.. to revive an old computer.. i could always use the memory elsewhere... and the cpu in my wifes computer.. scratch that.. cpu in my dual core vm box.. and she can have the dual core... e6300 or e6400.. up from a pentium d would be a screamer for her.. hah

trying to juggle funds.. gonna see what happens when bonus comes out.. I may tell the wife. hey u got the tax return (which was really nice ammount).. so i would like my bonus for my canon lens and repair my computer to which you will get an upgrade too!!!!.. will see...

ok my bonus check #'s are in and will be paid to me on the 15th.. so with that...
im very happy and since the wife told me what she was doing with MY bonus... she stopped and said.. ok what is it you want to do with it.. i said im tired of dicking with old stuff.. need to buy a new mobo, cpu, memory.. and possibly video card...
she said ok.. i didnt tell her im also going to buy the canon 70-200 f2.8 IS USM Mark 1 for $1400!!!! (Mark 2 is the new one and is $2400!!!!!)

so I want to start from this post down as I was asked what will the machine be used for...so here goes..

LightRoom RAW editing
Photoshop Template editing (.psd)
Video Editing
Adobe After Effects

I mentioned vm's above but to tell u the trueth I dont need to as I have 3 hypervisor 5 servers running :D and one of them will get my memory from this dead machine...
so no to vmware

Games... not many.. Maybe MW3 and BF3 but that is a maybe as i havent bought them yet and own them on 360...

so I need a mobo, ram, cpu

I have 2 x xfx black edition 9600gt's - should i upgrade them too?

of course would like to keep the budget down.. told the wife $500ish.. not including video card if i decide to upgrade that....

so can you recommend something now based off of the list above? i know i dont need 32gb of ram or even 24gb....

will reuse my antec 900 case, corsair 620w modular power supply, hard drives and burner....

if u have a cpu/mobo ram combo that will work for me at around $500 and i can get a video card too let me know.. im a nvidia guy

appreciate it guys.. i have been out of the hardware side since i built my machine in 2007 so all this i5, i7 is new to me.. i see sooooo many cpu types...

I would recommend this from MIcrocenter:

i5 2500k - $179.99
Asus P8Z68-V Gen3 - $179.99 - $50 combo deal: $129.99
Kingston 2x4GB (8GB kit) DDR3 1333 1.5v ram - $29.99

Puts you at $340ish pre-tax. You can get a pretty decent video card for around $200. But I would look on Newegg or on the forums here for a good deal. Also, if are willing to wait some new AMD cards (7870/7850) and Nvidia cards are due soon.

*crap ... if you want firewire then you'll have to upgrade to the P8Z68-V PRO (this gets you an additional 2 Sata ports and firewire). The deluxe model adds some more goodies on top of that but at a much higher price. Alternative motherboard would be:

Gigabyte z68xp-UD3 - $150 - $50 bundle: $100 which has a firewire port.

^^ so you feel i5 and only 8gb ram.. sounds good to me.. I just want to make sure whatever i do will last me a few years as my q6600 has...

The ram is so cheap, you could always get two sets but unfortunately, it's a $150 increase to go with the i7 2600k.

understood... like said im hoping to make this upgrade last 4-5 years... i was originally looking at $500-$600.. and will upgrade/add to get there..

not that you know.. but when the wife gives approval of funds.. better use it.. i wont see it any other way unless i get it now!!!!! :p

still at this guys.. so my tax return is in..

so i understand.. i5 2500k cpu... has built in graphics.. so i just get a mobo with the video onboard too..

will that be better than my current dual 9600gt's?
sorry for the last q.. im nearing down...

Most of the z68 motherboards (for example those that I linked) have built in video capability. It's good for using in the event your videocard blows up, but you can't game on it by any means. To give you an idea, It had a hard time playing League of Legends and World of Warcraft at very low settings. You'll still want to get a new videocard. You could use your 9600 cards in the mean time if needed.

ok well i do appreciate everyone's time and looking at this with me..

but low and behold.. told the wife $511 for mobo, cpu and memory.. she said from where.. i said.. umm we got a tax return and a nice bonus... she said.. no it is all spent..

go figure between tax return, bonus and 401k i cashed out there is enough money to buy a car... and i cant even spend a dime of it..

so i logged into amazon to see i had $120 in gift cards.. did a stupid search for 780i.. and for $77 (free to me due to gift cards) i have a board coming..

EVGA nVidia nForce 780i 3 Way SLI 132-CK-NF78-A1

in due time i will build a new rig... i have to have a computer up and running now cuz i want to start my own photography business and realizing the editing on my laptop isnt setting the correct WB i need... grrrrrrrr

I had that same Evga board. Hopefully it's the version they fixed with the improved cooling. I don't want to rain on your parade, but I had so many issues with that board, I think many did in general with the 780i series. Unfortunately at the time that was the premium that had to be paid for SLi.

gotcha.. if it is temp... the machine is in a nice and cold basement...
hopefully all goes well.. and limps me along till i can turn a hobby into a business and get the funds to build a mega machine... :p

Yeah good luck man with that mobo. The 780i was only a little more reliable than the craptactcular 680i chipset. It wasn't until the 750 chipset that some semblance of stability was found.
