Well after thinking Im switching from a nVidia geforce 4 fx 5200 128mb to a ATI radeon 9800 256mb.. Paying about $120 for the radeon at this computer place by my house. You think my change is wise? Or should I look at something else? Also will this be good for playing lineage2 with all graphics on high? Current set-up

60 GB hard drive
Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz
1gig of ram
ATI Radeon 9800 256mb
Abit BH7 motherboard

That radeon doesn't sound like a very good card. I'd go with a 9800 Pro with 128MB of memory instead.

I would agree with the above poster, save your money and just get a 9800 Pro 128 Mb. The extra 128 ram will not make much difference on that card. It will cost a bit more but I would also look at the Geforce 6800's. They have good performance for the price.

If you can get a legit 9800 Pro 256Mb for $120 then by all means go for it. That is a great price on a good card.

It's not a bad card at all.. The performance between the 128 / 256MB versions are minimal. Howver.. you can bios flash the 256 to XT speeds. :) Not sure if it's the VIVO one or not, but you many want to take that into consideration.

I previously had a 9800Pro 128, and it was a kick ass card, until i moved into the BFg 6800Gt. Its a good card, good O/C potiential, and a good price it sounds like.

What a waste. $120 for a 9800 non-Pro? Maybe it'll last the end of this year. And that's a big 'maybe'.

Save the $120 you have now, and put it on a 6600GT. It's much more future proof than a 9800np.

And before any ATi fans start biting my ass, I'm a proud owner of a 9800Pro. :p

The only reason I'm concerned about the 256MB card is that it's probably 128 bit for that price. You want a 256 bit card.

thats funny. he is talking about a below 150$ card and some peoples bring up the 6800.

As long as it's not a 9800SE it's a good price. If it is an SE don't buy it. There is a reason they named them 'Sh*t Edition'.

You should have gotten an 6800nu, which will spank the 9800XT on a bad day.

There's little point in recommending a 6800nu for someone with $120 in their pocket. You might as well suggest they get 6800Ultras in SLI.

Why not wait til you can afford one? It's only $80-120 dollars more ;)

Exactly, he may have $120, but that doesn't justify his purchase. Unless he's a 13 year old living off lunch money.

Even then, stay off the cafeteria hamburgers, buy salads, or bring sandwiches to school. You'll have $200 in no time! :p

$120 for a 9800, if it's got 256-bit memory, is a good deal. If it's got the 128-bit memory bus, it's not really worth spending money on.

Considering that you've been living with a 5200, the 9800 will take good care of you for a while. It'll definately beat down anything else in the sub-150 pricerange. Getting $80 together for a 6600GT would definately get you a better card - it's up to you to decide how much you really want to spend tho.

As other's have said, as long as it's a 256bit card, it's a good deal. For those that recommend saving, don't listen to them. If you had an 800 dollar budget they'd recommend you save more for an SLI setup. :p
The 9800 will be a world of difference from what you have now.

I am currently using a Geforce as we speak and my friend who is using a geforce also, We both dont like the effect we get from the video cards. Not sure if its nVidia but when we play on his brothers radeon x300SE or my brothers Radeon(not sure which 1) We are much rather pleased with playing on are brothers then on ours.

Ok so I have $200 to spend on a ATI card or which ever you think is best for gaming at that cost. I sold my Geforce fx5200 to my friend for $100 so I will have enough. So go ahead splatter me with your idea's.

or 6800nu

I kinda balked at that, till I went to Newegg and looked it up.

A 6800LE would be THE cheap (refurb) cream of the crop in that price range. Although a cheap 6800 is more in the $250 range. Great card though regardless!

Really? Didn't know that, I thought the 128vs256 bit interfaces would be the decideing factor.

(seriously, I have no idea how the LE and 6600 compete)

So your telling me that in the $180-$215ish price range I can't get a good ATI radeon? So in that price range it has to be geForce correct?

128 vs 256MB is only an issue if the card in question has a 256bit bus width and enough processing power to use all that memory.

$180-$215ish price range
not sure if $245 is doable or not, but if so...
Circuit City has the eVga 6800NU for 299.00 in store, 249.00 listed on the website (after rebate), pricematch plus get's ya an extra $5 off. Me and 2 buddy's have done this already. All 3 have unlocked the pipes and shaders, none overclock very far (avg 15% core, 10%memory) but kick serious butt in gaming. (in everything)

As for the 9800, as long as it's not an SE it's a good buy for the price. (SE = SLOW EDITION)

The 128bit 9550's also do pretty darn good for a low end card (overclock to 9600pro speeds pretty easy) (about $68 last i checked at newegg)

Yes.

The x700s are good (not as good as the 6600GT), but they aren't available with AGP.

You won't beat a 6600GT for $200.

Ok for the 6600GT Please post links to newegg.com cause I dont know which brands make good videocards so if you could just link me to the one your all talking about would be great. Also does my motherboard support 4x or 8x? not sure i have a abit-usa bh-7

Just to make sure, the 6600GT is better then ATI radeon 9800 256mb rite?

6600GT > Radeon 9800 256mb Correct?
