Swapping E6600 for Q6600

I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 currently in my machine. I just purchased a Q6600 that I want to swap into that same machine. The question is, can I do the swap without reinstalling Windows XP + Windows Vista? Anyone try something like this? Thanks.
 
It should work just fine. You already have the multiprocessor HAL loaded anyway so it's just going to find a couple more which you can use. No reinstall needed unless you feel like doing it anyway.

 
Take the heatsink off, pull out the E6600, do the thermal paste right on the heatspreader on the Q6600 (half-piece of rice dab, smack in the center) and make sure the HSF has a clean surface with no remnants of the old thermal compound, and put it back together. You're good to go...

Yah well, doesn't hurt to reiterate things from time to time. We all make rookie mistakes, and believe me, I've been around here longer than this nickname would hint at. :)
 
Speaking of noobie mistakes, I was swapping parts and pulled the heatsink off the Q6600 in my Gateway, then decided to quit for the day. When I came back I'd forgotten it was off and turned the system on. It immediately shut off. So like a dumbass I reached over and turned it back on and it just hung there. It took a good five seconds to figure out why it wasn't booting. Then I couldn't get to the power cord fast enough. Luckily, it still works just fine.
 
haha, thanks guys. Actually, although I've only had an account for 6 years, I've probably been lurking these forums for 7 or 8 yrs.
 
I'd only advise a reinstall of Windows if it was a motherboard change, even if it's also unnecessary but let the system more reliable and sometimes more stable.
Any other parts really doesn't need a windows reinstall just remove the old and put the new one, except vgas, that would be better you clean all video drivers frist.

I am typing this reply on an XP Pro machine that just made that change, actually. It was not a problem for me.

This machine last ran about 6 months ago, and that was on my e6600. It booted up yesterday, for the first time since then, running on a q6600 I just got from Fry's to start a "virtualization project". I don't need a lot of GHz, but I do plan on putting 4 or more virtual servers into this machine (for a home lab-environment) pretty quick here.

I am on Windows XP Pro right now (and for this machines entire, and very intermittent, life), as the server OS won't go on for a bit. My free copy of Server 2008 RC1 will only stay activated for a limited time after I first put it on.
