Are these speakers worth the cash?

those reviews are tempting, but anyone has them to give more insight to them

I plan to use them with the laptop I have with audigy 2 zs notebook

if u are going to spend 175+ for a 2.1 speaker config .. arent you are better off with 5.1 system ?
 
That depends on the sound quality he wants. Swans are pretty well known at least on the internet for being a quality brand with very good construction, design, and in turn, sound. If you're unwilling to use a receiver + real speakers (which I assume you are since it's for a laptop), then in terms of computer speakers the Swans will be pretty tough to beat in on sound quality alone.
 
well, I also own the Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultras, but now are being used for the living room computer for movie watching and other stuff but dont have speakers for my room to use with the laptop

I mostly spend listening to music, so the 5.1 are not in the picture since the other three speakers are not used when listening to music
 
Those are pretty much the cat's meow for 2.0 PC speakers.

as for the company, Swans makes some killer home audio speakers, very pricey though.

if I do want to go back to using speakers on my computer, I'll prolly get a pair of those.

They aren't bass monsters, but what you will get is rather accurate sound reproduction.

You may want to grab a relatively inexpensive sub to go with the swans for when you listen at home. Almost an HSu will do, or one of the new Rocket x subs. Just something to cross over at 80Hz that will extend to 30Hz or so. You don't want thumpy, just something to make them sound a little more full when listening to music.

I know you're using these for a laptop so maybe that's impracticle, but it isn't a bad idea if you do use it at home a lot.
 
Not sure if anyone else is interested in 2yr old speakers, but i just bought a pair for my brother's bday and boy they sound incredible. (he's been using Cambridge PCWorks for, what 6 years?)

The only comparison for desktop speakers i've had are klipsch ultras, z-680, EV Sonic XS, Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 and realize i'm just getting into audio.

All the reviews were certainly right and it's hard to judge quality of music, but just running through some random tracks (Talib, Beethoven, Alicia Keyes...) they sound great in the treble. Incredibly sharp and clear compared to my friend's Klipsch Promedia Ultras. I'm not quite certain what soundstage or imaging is but i think i have a hint when i sit in front of these speakers. The music feels...immersive (sorry if this is vague).

I wish my Minolta X60 came in already then i could take pictures. If you look on newegg link posted earlier in the thread, they look compact-WRONG. These puppies are behemoth for desktop speakers. I think they were originally made to be monitors, and for comparison they stand as high as the 19" LCD they sit next to. On the package I believe the weight was around 35-45lbs. They come in white cloth bags with cheap cables.


I was just so impressed I had to put in my 2 cents. One last thing is the 64Hz-20kHz begs for a sub when you listen to heavier beats or play games.
 
I would also have to agree on the excellent sound that these speakers produce. They have great treble and are incredibly sharp and clear compared to the Klipschs I used to have. They are very similar to the Grado SR-80 headphones. Headphones would not reproduce bass very well anyway on headphones. Excellent all around except for music with heavy bass. The cables that come with the swans now are cheap compared to what all the reviewers got and what it shows on the newegg website. I replaced it with thicker gauge cable and banana plugs.

I would agree with Azrael that these speakers are not compact. Each speaker is close to 20 lbs each. Here's a pic for reference next to my Dell 2405.

would you mind listing them by any chance? I've been scoping these swans as multimedia speakers but would love to check out other options. Also debating between 2.0 and 2.1's. Trying to bypass using a reciever since this is a secondary gaming rig with no htpc usage.

These would replace a set of creative 5.1's i recently picked up, i swear i want to put my foot thru them, i can't help but compare their horrible quality to my main stereo setup.

I dunno if it's a good deal, but I have to believe that the bass is better. It looks like the woofer on the Alesis MK2 is bigger, right?

P.S. Wait, are you sure that those are actives? The specs page says that the connectors are 5-way binding posts.

p.p.s Yeah. They're unpowered.

Yeah.. the M1's (not Monitor Ones) are the actives. I have had my original Monitor Ones for about 3 or 4 years and love them. I wish I could find some Monitor Twos (far fields) in good condition.. hmm

Do the Swans M200 compare anything like the Sennheiser HD590 headphones?

I use my HD590's for most of my computer work, but sometimes speakers come in handy, and at the moment I have a set of Altec Lansing 6-8 year old 2.1 speakers. They are nice, especially compared to the newer altec lansing speakers...

Just wondering if the M200's were worth the upgrade. (PS, it does'nt look like i can find them anywhere too easy, newegg is out of new ones).

Dude $200 is nothing to spend on speakers. That wont even get you a decent single surround speaker.
 
$175 is cheap. Heck my next set of "bookshelf" speakers are probably going to be the Von Schweikert VR-1....I could buy at least five pairs of those swans for that!

Given the VR-1 is not for computer use...but you also have studio monitors that can work for nearfield that cost upwards of $800 each! That's $1600/pr...

...it's all relative, once you get into hi-fi, things start getting pricey. Of course there is a point of diminishing returns as well....but that's still way up there.

On most PC 5.1 systems it's quantity of chanels over quality of channels. The M200 is a totally different beast. It's for music, not feeling the grenade in battlefield2 rip you in half. It's for hearing the guitarist's pickwork as well as what his guitar's pickups are seeing, or the subtleties in music that most people never hear. That's what hi-fi is all about....that's also why some of us drop pretty heavy cash on it.

(oh and by the way, my headphones were $150 ....and I still think an upgrade is in order {i'm not exactly rich either...it's called either having something better than ramen and vitamins, or having a good stereo!} :p )
 
I just recieved a pair from Newegg 30min. ago. They look incredible! Packaging was also very nice. They sound fairly good, but they are definately lacking low bass. There is a mean mid-bass hump, but the highs are quite nice and clear. These are by no means accurate, but they sound good. Much better than my old Creative Inspire 5.1 :p The included interconnects are very low quality, and the connecting cable is steel. I didnt even bother using them :rolleyes: I just looked at Newegg, and it looks like they are no longer selling the M200.
 
Did you ship the Mullet yet?
If not hook it up as a preamp to the swans..... watch the volume level though. ;)
I kinda want to know what that combo would sound like. :D

Ok, everything is connected, just powered on and waiting for the tubes to warm up. Gonna give them 20min while I fix dinner :)

Playing "The High Party" by Ted Leo. Woah, way too much treble! After turning the treble down a bit, they sound pretty much the same as before the addition of the Millet. The bass does seem better with the Millet though, gonna try the PPA as a preamp in a few :)

Anyone know of any mods I could do to the M200?
 
Phew, good thing I checked this thread one last time before I tried it! I always thought the PPA was designed to be a preamp also? I remember seeing that somewhere?
 
Yea, you can use the PPA as a preamp but you have to add a switch that bypasses the ground channel or it ends up trying to sink the all of the curent on the ground channel in the amp it's connected to.

I sent an e-mail out to the offical Swans company a day or two ago, and I hope to get a response back soon.

Newegg sometimes takes off an item untill they get it in again........ strange, but they do it.... I'm not sure if this is one of thoes times though.
