I am still using the PC in this thread.

Earlier today while playing a game on Steam.
I got a glue screen and had to hard reboot.
Once I did all was fine for about 15-20 mins then it seems as if explorer crashed.
I could move the mouse but was not able to click on anything.
Once again I rebooted. Ran a chkdsk, scanned for any viruses.
Upon reboot I got a black screen asking me to select the correct boot drive and restart.
This happened again several minutes later while i was just idling in windows.

Am I right to think this may have something to do with the root drive or could it be some other issue?
I really need to decide as I plan to buy another drive locally and re-install windows if needed.

On second thought. Now that I am calming down a bit and attempting to investigate more. I am seeing lots of errors in Event Manager.
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Is one I see several times.

I am running out of space on my Root Drive anyway and thinking of getting a new SSD and re-installing.
Can you suggest another one.
I will still be using it for gaming and web browsing.
 
More Tomfoolery. Remembered I disabled some startup items after the bluescreen.
Re-enabled them. Then upon restart had no sound.
Though windows did not seem to think that was an issue after several reboots.
Same thing continued to happen.
Disabled Sound card and used onboard sound.
I now have sound.
Possible the soundcard is causing the issues?

What sound card were you using (before you disabled it)?

How close are you to full capacity on your SSD?

If you were to buy today (Saturday), how much at most would you spend on an SSD?

I have made two other changes to the original build. Added a 128GB SSD from OCZ as a third drive.
Added a third Monitor.

I cleaned out the case just a while ago to make sure nothing could be overheating.
I did find plastic from the front of the video card that I failed to remove that was hanging from the card and touching the MB.
I am unsure if this could have caused an issue.
I will attempt to run it and see how long it takes if to get the BSOD and what the exact stop error is.
I think it was a 0x000004 or something.
It first happened after playing a game. So I will try to do that and note the time.
I just want to be sure it is not another piece of hardware. I have not updated any software lately so I do no suspect that.

Did you buy the 128GB OCZ SSD instead of the 64GB Crucial M4? Or did you buy it in addition to the Crucial SSD?

To alleviate your capacity issues, I recommend buying one of the following SSDs and using that as your new primary drive:

$174 - Samsung 840 Series 250GB SSD
$189 - Crucial M4 256GB SSD

To speed up the process of transferring drives from one SSD to the other, I recommend a drive imaging program like Acronis True Image or (a freeware version like) DriveImage XML. (While you can continue to use your SSD, the larger capacity SSDs generally perform better.)

In the future, you may also want to buy a larger capacity HDD and dump all of your non-essential programs and files onto it. There have been plenty of sales occurring for 1TB and 2TB drives under $100 each. (You can even occasionally find a 3TB hard drive for under $150 if you look hard enough.)

Regarding the sound card, the easiest (possible) solution is to uninstall all traces of the drivers (and other software it came with) and reinstall the latest version of the drivers/software.

I couldnt afford getting the larger SSD earlier.
So I bought the larger OCZ in addition and left the smaller one as the boot drive.
I use the 500GB drive for most programs and to store all non essentials.

I has been up for almost an hour now. Though I am noticing some hitch in games. Perhaps because i am using the onboard sound now. I am not sure.
Going to attempt to reenable the sound card and see if I continue to get the issue.
Thanks for all the advice and the SSD links. I will most likely order one and re-install just because i want a larger boot drive.
 
Back again,

about an hour in when watching a video on youtube.
Video stops. PC locks up I get the infinite W7 scrolling circle I cannot do anything. crtl+alt+del does nothing.
Screens flash momentarily. Get BSOD 0x000000F4
PC restarts and I get "Reboot and select proper boot device, or install boot media and press any key.
Hit reset button and get same notice.
Have to power off completely and then start up.
able to select safe mode or start normally etc.
 
What's your primary drive, the Crucial M4 or the OCZ (model)?

Have you recently updated the firmware to either (or both) SSD(s)?

Have you updated any other drivers or programs recently (before you started having these problems)?
 
M4 is the boot drive? Have you checked the firmware revision?

Early Crucial M4s had a firmware bug that would cause the drive to freeze up after being on for about an hour. The screwy thing is it doesn't start happening until some internal counter reached a certain point, which would take something like 6 months of continuous operation. After a power cycle an M4 with the bugged firmware will work fine for about an hour, then lock up. Power cycle it and it's back to normal... for about an hour. A firmware update is available to fix the problem. Your other thread says you got the parts in Feb. 2012. I bought a 128GB M4 around then & it had the bugged firmware revision, so I had to upgrade it.

* I may be a bit off on some of the details of the bug, just going from memory here.
 
The m4 is the primary. I have not updated anything but flash and I uninstalled that earlier. I will have to check the firmware when I get home.
 
Don't check the M4's firmware; update it. Do the same for the OCZ SSD.

The firmware upgrades won't fix the capacity issue, as you'll likely have to move things around (or, more specifically, to the HDD) until you can buy the new SSD.

Follow the instructions carefully as a bad update could brick your SSD.
 
OK update. I never got this far. Changed The CMOS battery because I opened up to remove the sound card. Machine would not boot.
Connected another PSU and it started right up. Gonna get that replaced then will move on to firmware. Lol not a good weekend.
 
Ok got tired of waiting for PSU to come back.
Bit the bullet and bought one at Tigerdirect locally. Corsair GS700 plugged it all up and away she went.
Then noticed I have no network connection.
Checked BIOS and it was enabled. Restarted attempted to re-install driver etc. WIndows says no network card installed.
Called to get an RMA. The saga continues.
So Since I am getting the board back I will probably pick up the SSD recommended above
Should I look at getting a more powerful CPU while I am at it?
I would be willing to spend about 250.00 US on it.
Any suggestions?
 
Nah, don't bother with a CPU upgrade until you know for sure that you have a solid system AND if you plan on overclocking.
 
This is making me consider Overclocking. I guess I figure why not. I really want to get something high end but I guess the resolution I play at doesn't warrant higher tier equipment?
Would I be able to take advantage of things playing at 19x10? I want it buttery smooth and most but not all the bells and whistles.
Starting to get into Firefall and some other shooter type stuff. Defiance, Warframe etc. I could feel some hitching.

It may warrant depending on the game you're playing. So far, you've listed no game that would require a CPU clock speed increase. i.e BF3 or even SC2. The three games that you did mention are relatively new games so it would not be surprising to me if the hitching was due to video card drivers or the game engine. Do note that your current mobo and current CPU already allows you to OC the CPU by another 400Mhz. Once you get the system COMPLETELY stable, then start thinking about doing that 400Mhz overclock. It would be a good idea to get a 3rd party HSF if you're actually serious about overclocking:
$27 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus HSF for LGA 1366 and LGA 1156

You will only need a CPU upgrade if you plan on overclocking past an additional 400Mhz. Even then it's gonna cost you another $220. So you'd have to be a real extreme overclocker in order for that $220 to be worth it.

OK, surprisingly I just got the PSU And MB back. I am about to order the Cooler. Is the SSD listed still the best way to go? I want to get it all at the same time if possible.

Oh and I recommend getting the Samsung 840 Pro 256GB.
 
Not sure. Ordered the Cooler and decided to just get the larger SSD since I will probably reload windows anyway.
 
Why the Pro Over the regular one posted earlier in the thread? The pro is out of Stock and I can have the other one by Saturday if I order from Amazon. Any reason?
 
The 840 Pro is one of the best performance SSDs available. (I don't know enough about Crucial's new M500 to recommend that right now.)

Try to look for the 840 Pro elsewhere. Otherwise, go for the 840 Series.
 
Apparently back in stock at Amazon now. I ordered it. Should all be here by Saturday. That will give me time to rebuild everything. Thanks as always for the advice.
 
Looks like I may be back in business. Everything installed. Even though I had no idea what I was doing with that Giant Cooler!
